Curious about the motivation behind posting numorous negative reviews

Bluefear77Bluefear77 Member UncommonPosts: 112

I’m curious about the motivation behind posting negative review after negative review. Why post it again and again?

I can understand if you don’t like a game, but why do you continue to post again and again that you don’t like the game?

I will give you an example: I didn’t like “Fallen Earth.” I have never gone on any Fallen Earth forum and bashed the game. Did the game have problems? Yes. Do I feel like it is ok for other people to like the game?  Yes. But I never felt like I had to go on the game's forum and attack the game.

So why do the same people on this site continue to post again and again how much they dislike/hate the game? Why do you feel it is necessary to act like that?

I’m curious. Thanks.

It's mostly due to the type of community that that his tends to attract.

This is the home for the mmo homeless forum. When ppl are off loving the game they are playing, they ignore mmo.com

when their game fails them and they are homeless again, they come here to flame about it.

The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.

The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, solo Questing, Cut-Scenes...

cause everyday someone comes in and writes a good-bye letter that we all have to read.

My guess is that it is a natural response to the artificially inflated posts and reviews.

  • PurutzilPurutzil Member UncommonPosts: 3,048

I agree, why do people post such pointless praising threads about how 'good' a game is and just spamming the crap out of it without any bit of useful or new information about it? Why do people make thread after thread about the same deal over and over little in terms of actually 'new' content to read?

Simply put, people feel the need to voice their opinion. People post negative reviews on here because they felt the game wasn't any good. They have just as much right as anyone posting a good review to do the same. The publisher will be sure to inflate the game into be a golden idol no matter what a giant failure it might be so it takes the users to really validate through their own opinion what they like or don't like. I'm sure a lot of the negative reviews are just out of pure disapointment which tends to spark a much more vocal response of anger or frusteration.

Summary: There are so many negative reviews because so many people got a bad taste from the game. That is all.

In theory because we want to save our fellow gamers from wasting their time and money.

But in actual practice becuase we think our opinions are better and some how more correct than others.

Its not a matter of simply not liking the game.  I don't like Harry Potter books, and i really could care less how popular they are.  Now, if that started making every other fantasy author start writing really crappy, poorly thought out copies of Harry Potter and then foisting them on the public and it got to the point where you couldnt actually find any quality fantasy to read because everything is dominated by crap Harry Potter clones, then all of a sudden im going to be inclined to try to do something about it.

This is the same issue, its not what SWTOR is, its what it represents.  It represents that MMO developers have decided we're all idiots and that we will accept poor quality, buggy, derivative pieces of crap and then pay full price for it.  The sad part, the REALLY sad part, is you have a bunch of people, mainly biodrones and Star Wars fanbois, who are incapable of pulling the wool from their eyes and seeing the forest for the trees.  They're too busy drinking the kool-aid to realize the game their playing is actually crap, and the only reason they are "enjoying" it, is because it happens to be their "most favoritist IP evar!"

Happens with every MMO past, present, an future.

[Some] Negative reviews hold truth and [Some] Positive hold truth.

Quite odd most Negative reviews come from many fans who've reach lvl 50 though that's how it is in many MMOs so no worries.

You'd also be suprised at the 180 reviews as well.

    Oh and what Badspock said.

I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.

I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.

when a product that should be great and instead is crap not to mention their misleading ad campaign then i feel you are free to post as many times as you want. Not that i have but i have no issue with people who do unless it is against the rules of the site and tbh if it saves people from buying this festering pile of turd keep posting. I am so hacked off i am boycotting their film since they are using the mmo footage to sell it, the cheap gits.

There's not much else better to play, ergo they have more than enough time on their hands to repeat how much they dislike SWTOR.

One does have to admit, however, that the game was significantly over-hyped.  I'm still playing it and I find myself occasionally feeling a little disappointed.  In my humble opinion, I think people feel cheated and ripped-off - they expected a lot more than they received.  Honestly, I think they deserved at least a little bit more from Bioware.  That is: I don't believe that the people who feel this way are totally out of line.

That said, I'm also not here to bash on the game because, like I said, I'm still playing it.

I think its mainly because of the over the top obnoxious fanboys that yell and scream anytime there is a valid or invalid criticism of their game. If they were a bit less loud and obnoxious there would be a lot less bashing.  But they really distingueshed themselves pre-release and at release. But then again most of the criticism is from former over the top fanboys.  So its more part of the normal cycle that we see here on the mmorpg.com forums.  Fanboy hpyes their game calling anyone who disagress with them names and accuses them all of being trolls when they point out flaws.  Fanboy plays the game and proudly said this is the greateast game ever made and then goes on a long posting spree calling people names.  Fanboy plays the game longer and suddenly realizes he does not like the game and before you know it he is calling everyone else who disagress with him and likes the game names.  Before long he finds himself a new game to hype and the cycle continues.

The Bottomline is most of these people fanboys and so called haters really are not mmo players.  They are forum posters with little substance.  But then again almost all forums of any subject lack substance, intelliegence, thought and objectivity.  Maybe its more an indictment of American values or the internet in general.

    i agree with this.

We do have to be careful though.

It is not 100% black and white.

You could say "I think the implementation of companions is great!" and that opinion would be valid and as a subjective opinion, beyond being proven "right" or "wrong."

But if you were to say something like "I think the open world PvP on Illum at level 50 is the best implementation of open world PvP ever!" than your credibility would be tarnished to the point that your opinion is, sadly, completely dismisable.

But thats only your opinion of their opinion.  You already stated that we only post opinions on opinions because we think our opinion is better... IMO.

But credibilty does come into play, after all if your plumber gave you his opinion over your doctor's to have your liver removed, you may weight one over the other. So when something that is pretty glaring it does take some weight off your scales.

    Thanks for the replies.

I can understand writing one negative review to voice your opinion, but why continue to search the forums and write negative review after negative review. I feel like it goes beyound disliking a game. It almost seems unhealthy.

It is as if some people on these forums have a vendetta against the game.

    Isn't it just a game?

After reading these forums sometimes I feel like I should dislike a game when I don't.

Sometimes, it's simply a matter of venting on a forum with others are are/may be interested in your opinion.  I mean, if you're not interested in anyone else's opinions, what's the point of even going to a discussion forum...

The people with the goodbye letters, honestly they all read the same: Frustration with a bit of broken hearted disappointment.  Simple as that.

Think of this as sort of a 'support group'; except instead of supporting each other, many just bash bash bash.

I think the biggest issue with SWTOR is that for 200million dollars the game should have blown everyone away. With that kind of money even myself (With the resources) could have made a game to be top 5 all time MMOs.

The people who continue to start thread after thread on the very same topic are either trolls, or they're people who actually hate the game b/c of its IP or style of play (i.e. maybe the person is a star trek fan and hates star wars, etc) .

A very common example of this runs prevalent on these forums.  You have all the "I'm a superbadass PVP'er and i pwn the carebear n00bs" types who think that MMO's are only about PVP and full corpse loot and kill anywhere anytime, etc, and anybody who enjoys things like raids, dungeon runs, or PVE of any kind is obviously a carebear idiot and their wants/desires are of no concern, nor should they be to developers.

I only tend to post about stuff i have played or followed and researched i do no go into ultra fanboi mode or negative trolling and if i get something wrong i'll admit it,i also have been around the Mo scene a while and can spot the crap from a diamond, and i will defend a view point if i think it's right.

Now what really riles me is people posting negative stuff but with out any basis of fact it amazes me thay bother at all as most of the time it makes no sense and just wastes the forums time and mine then trying to garner a response that may educate certain people or change their view, but with out resorting to Blitz krieging the forums with my views and then annoying other users, but i suspect it is the way of the world and ironically if we did not have the negative crowd this would be a very boreing forum just be nice if some would engage their brains before entering the debate !!

I think this is a major part of the "problem" people actually do expect to be "blown away". IMO that's just setting yourself up for disappointment.

I do because I'm PISSED. I'm pissed that Bioware launched a shallow game and I want everyone to know I'm PISSEd about it.

It makes me feel bettter :) [Mod Edit]

Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
