SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

NCSoft has sent us some amazing stats about Lineage II: Truly Free. From what we can see, the transition from a traditional subscription-based MMO to a free to play title has been awesomely successful.

Check it:

  • NCSoft has almost quadrupled its revenue in two months

  • The concurrent player base as increased more than 800%

  • The number of servers more than doubled to accommodate the influx of new players.

  • More than a quarter of a million players have enjoyed the Path to Awakening service, which provides helpful buffs, items and advice to accelerate new characters towards the level cap.

  • A surge of activity in forums as well as Facebook, where Likes soared to more than 280,000 thanks to an active and still growing community

I'm really happy to see Lineage2 doing well again.  I re-downloaded the game again and tried to play, however... it has just changed too much for me.

All the people I used to play with are gone, the community I knew have either quit or maybe moved to new servers, and all the core gameplay has changed.  That and none of the people I currently game with ever played L2, so I can't drag them back with me.

Without some people I know to get back into the game, I'm afraid I'm just going to have to pass this up.  Which is sad really, as I find Lineage2 was the second best PvP MMO i've played.

Best wishes to everyone who is playing on the newly populated servers with lots of familar faces.

I dunno. Figures like that are to be expected in the first months after going F2P or freemium, due to people being curious, but I wonder how it'll be after those first try out months. Also, Lineage had something like 1-2 million people playing it at its peak (mostly Koreans or South East Asians, but still). If those figures include Korea, then 250-300k isn't that enormously high. I guess Aion has taken over the prime spot from the Lineage line of MMO's in Korea.

Lets see if people attack these numbers the way Bioware's were.

Wait, NCsoft is making Guild Wars 2...

These numbers are fact, nothing to see here

Depends what do the numbers say.

4 times the revenue .. uhu

8 times the former playerbase aha

    250k have tried it?

Except that it is more profitable to go f2p that subscription based you cannot say anything.

Go f2p is what I can say!

So was it GW2 fans that were "attacking the numbers" for Bioware? Well I am truly sorry that people on the internet made you feel bad. Maybe you should snuggle up under a blanket and have a hot chocolate, that might help you feel better.

    Amen, man.^

I think it's great. People like to spend money the way they like instead of being tied to a subscription, and this kinda shows that.

I'm happy to see L2 doing well!

"The concurrent player base as increased more than 800%"

PLAYERBASE..? What are they talking about? Lineage II is back to it's dark ages of 2008 again. Everywhere you look you see BOTS BOTS BOTS. I bet less than 10% of the PLAYERBASE is legit :'(

  • makiimakii Member Posts: 280

The game is FULL OF BOTS , FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLL, All channels are spammed with gold sellers. Gms dont bann botters.

THeres like 5% real players. many duo or quatriple account, since you can open as many clients as possible. I stopped playing at lvl 67. To much grind for me.

Besides: lvl 85-99 is now like lvl 1-85(old times).

I don't know what the real percentage, but there really does appear to be a lot of bots, more often than not I felt like the only "live" player in an entire field of avatars...but who knows, maybe they all thought I was a bot too.image

If it truly is, I'm glad to see this game doing well. From what I've seen of it, it looks like a good game. I've never tried it, but I have always wanted to.

  • uohaloranuohaloran Member Posts: 811

Hey, free-to-play done right is okay with me.  I do wish there were another moniker for it, though.

  • mugengaiamugengaia Member Posts: 347

Well it does have crap load of content...so for a f2p game, I think it's well worth the try or even playing for a while.

I mean, last I heard, the game has become a lot more noobie friendly, which is alo main reason hardcore players left, because L2 hasn't really been L2 since C5.

good for NCSoft.  this is a great game, that never took off in the west like it could have.  The F2P model for this game is the BEST I have ever seen and I think SOE should take a serious look at this to see where EQ could be if they implemented something similar and did away with their flawed interpretation of F2P.

  • AnthonyMSAnthonyMS Member Posts: 33

Sorry, L2 was pure P2W Cash Shop when I played it. I also was disappointed that they have NCoins for L2 and PP (Paragon Points) for CoX (City of Heroes/Villains). Why? Because (PC-wise) it's SC (Station Cash) for DCUO, Clone Wars, Free Realms, and EQ2 (and potentially EQ when they make it F2P later this year). You can also subscribe to ALL of them with All Access for $20 per month.

I hope you are kidding right now.  NCSOFT and bioware/EA are noth PUBLICLY traded companies.  the ignorant people who attacked biowares numbers obviously never owned a share of stock in their lives...kinda like you.  Maybe you should educate yourself on the laws, rules and requirements PUBLICLY traded companies are bound to by the SEC.

These results don't surprise me at all.  It's an awesome game.
