TERA: Playing Outside North America

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The TERA site has been updated with new information for players outside of North America and their ability to play on En Masse servers. According to the post, IPs from Asia, Africa, Russia, and the Middle East will be blocked due to "the vast majority of Internet traffic we see from these regions are from cyber-criminals relating to account theft, gold-farming and other hacking behavior."

What's your reaction to the IP blocking?

    Why to ip-ban africa?

Never heard a bad thing about african players, en masse will get sued for racism and by NCsoft at the same time (joking)

I'm quite frustrated by this... but then I figure I have console games and other MMOs to keep me busy.

Still, the what if of being able to play gnaws at me a bit.

    LOL

Good move! Blocking 1/3 of your potential player base!

Thats always good for the buisness.

But than again, there will be no buisness because they never going to launch anyway. Due to lawsuit with NCsoft

I see this as narrow minded and xenophobic, I could counter that western companies are money grabbing ,so personally refuse to support their products in favour of games from the far east or indie companies.  There are plenty of avid gamers all around the world that take no part in illegal activity, yet they are now being branded so by a company that does not WANT to invest in infrastructure to support these players.  The company is cutting costs and using media images of gold sellers and hackers to hide behind.

Call be cynical but it wont affect me so I have no reason to be biased.

The problem I have is that the cyber criminals who do all that stuff know exactly how to get around IP blocking.  I don't mind blocking off people from a game if there were some benifit, but I feel like this ONLY hurts legit players, for pretty much zero gain.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

so its mean that they r afraid of african, azian and east europian hakers omg ... generalization of players from this countrys as cheaters and hakers seems to me like f racism... they lost a lot in my eyes as a company

still w8ing for TERA to play ;)

This is a very good point.

While it might be very easy to get around those IP blocks - it's also very easy for anyone with any competence to track those getting around blocks.  While I don't necessarily agree with their actions, it is their game, and if they feel this will cut down on 'illegal' activities even a little, then it is worthwhile (in their eyes) to do this.

that shows how little you know, a proxy most of time can bypass that, and hackers most of time don't play the game they made the hack for, if you pay for it that is the reason he made it, if not the reason is because he could. golde seller is not only in china it a plague in all places.

thing is over the internet, a true hacker can and will bypass all security you toss on him, and most of time he will do it just to see if he can, then tell to everyone, most of true hackers, do it for the knowledge and the thinking of everything related to info should be free.

FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

As long as they dont block me ( I'm European, still some american corporations block EU IPs... ) , I dont care :)

  • AntariousAntarious Member UncommonPosts: 2,834

Mixed feelings on that I guess.   I kind of think it does get my interest up .. simply due to the issues certain regions have caused to gaming.

Yet at the same time there are gamers in those areas.

Of course in certain regions where there is no legal reciprocation... its not like you can really do anything to the offender... of course from my limited grasp... it would seem "those types" will just use methods to bypass region blocking.

    1/3rd of the playerbase?

I doubt MMOs are all the rage in Sudan right now

it is slightly racist but not any more than Korean games only allowing Korean players
