For example, when I played, I did a lot of PvP at level 11 and got to like level 18 just through PvP and one or two flashpoints.  Then when I went back to do my story quests, I had to just slog through the story quests from level 11 all the way to my current level...it was drudgery...terribly boring.

It makes the whole game feel like you have to do things in a specific order, and if you don't, you will be punished.  I really wish that the story quests scaled for you somehow...it's just so boring to be forced to do grey quests.  And if I feel like doing PvP or flashpoints for a few hours, I want to be able to do them without being penalized for it.

    What do you guys think?

It is a standard MMO thing that gets even worse in a story driven game like TOR.

However is there no easy fix for it. You could have less quests than needed to level up, skip XP and only let people level up once they did a certain quest or remove levels altogether.

The last is really the only good solution but that demands new mechanics and I don't think changing that now would be a great idea, bad enough one SW game gets NGEd.

There also the possibility of making quests scale with level but that kinda works best in a CORPG. In Tor you would more or less be forced to have all mobs scaling to the same level as the player it fights. It would be a lot easier to remove level altogether instead.

You probably must learn to live with it.

Honestly something that could make going back to other planets and what is level scaling IMO.

I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.

I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.

I swear, you guys are grasping at straws looking for stuff to complain about.

It wouldn't be a problem if the story was OPTIONAL.  If it was optional, then you could just play through the game never doing it, and then play through again but do it to get a different experience.  But really, the story is the MAIN DRAW OF THE GAME.  If you are going to play SWTOR and skip the story, then you probably shouldn't be playing SWTOR.

The problem is that if you spend time doing some optional stuff, you can outlevel the mainline stuff and leave it in the dust.  And then doing it becomes kind of boring because everything is grey to you.

What you are saying is that the story is only fun if the mobs you encounter while doing the story are not grey?

Not the story so much as the quests you need to accomplish to fulfill the story.  Watching a cutscene is just as enjoyable whether the MOBS you killed were grey, orange, or purple.

But the point is that you have to normally kill a bunch of MOBs to GET to that cutscene.  Killing a bunch of grey MOBs isn't very fun.

Also...when you normally do a story quest, you have a ton of side quests around the area as well so it lessens your time spent "walking" compared to your time spent "fighting."  But when you ONLY have to do your story quest, there is no point in doing all those side quests as well.  When you only do your story quest, you spend more time walking.  Walking is pretty boring, fighting is more exciting.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

the easiest solution to this is to give the option they had way back in daoc.  just an option to turn off xp gains.  you could turn off xp , do all your side quests, flashpoints, pvp, space combat, etc.  then turn it back on for story quests.  since there are only 2 pvp brackets it really doesn't give the problem of people staying at a certain level and twinking their chars.  personally I do a ton of pvp/flashpoints/space combat/etc.   but I don't feel bored doing my class quests (even ones that are grey to me).

I leveled up on PVP because it's the only thing that seems dynamic about the game.

I wonder what game you're looking forward to, because every game with any objective or quest will have you doing the same thing.

    What do you guys think?

i think i have seen that in every mmo... the only way to fix that so far has a name, GW2 with the scaled lvl. That could have been a great feature for swtor although i never had that issue myself on swtor. I always try to outlevel my quests but end up underlevel so they are always hard for me and my companion. and i Love that.

How do i alwasy underlevel my quests? well, im not fond of bonus quests so i skip that grind most of the time, i rarely (very rarely) do instanced pvp and just a couple of flashpoints if i want some good exp and gear to break the cycle (gears from quest rewards are perfect for me when it comes to the difficulty of the leveling process.... i rarely die but i have to rest a lot so i have fun

This is why I curently have taken a few days off of playing SWTOR.  I agree with the OP regarding the linear and fairly constricting method of leveling.  I love the space combat but I stopped doing it so that this issue doesn't get worse.

I don't have a viable solution to fix it but I also am not paid to have one.

It's gotten to the point where some MMOs have been reduced to little more than success dispensers. Don't think. Don't challenge yourself. Do as little as possible... but still be rewarded for it. Yeah.. *that's* fun.

This would be an issue if doing your class story quest wouldn't be really fast.  If you outlevel your story quests, you can catch up in a matter of an hour or 2.   Just do the quest without the bonus and without doing any of the side quest.  You'll be caught up in no time.

Personally, I like that you can outlevel content.  I skipped a whole couple of planets on my first run through, Belsavis and another one I forgot which one (skipped the entire planet, except the story quest of course).  Anyways, the point is that on an alt, I'll definitely do these planets for a whole new experience.  I also skipped many of the bonus series.  I definitely do those that I missed.

I had the opposite issue. My story led me to Quesh when I was only lvl 32. I then discovered, after eating a bit of dirt a few times, that the planet started at 36.

Let me explain, my wife and i have stoped doing any quest content other than the main story quest becasue PVP warzones, a few space combat dailys and flashpoints casued us to quickly out lvl all of our quest content.

However this had another unintended consequnce that really is a negitive effect on the game for us,

With SWTOR being very single player oriented to begin with the end result of all of us (My Wife our friends and I.) doing only our story quest is that we NEVER quest toogeeather anymore, and we enjoy doing everthing toogeather in most MMO's.

Say what you will but this is a serious issue for people like us becasue we want to play toogeather and atm were only doing pvp and an occasional flashpoint toogether.

While this isnt enough to make me unsub i do belive what we like about MMO is that they bring us toogeather and this mechanic inhibits that..

All personal storylines can be shared and i have no idea how a game which offers a lot of content can be a bad thing. Also like i said earlier side quests can be skipped and one can easily make choices as to what content to do and how much to do in order to get to appropriate levels.

It surprises me that people would complain that there is so much to do that i am outlevelign content. maybe you guys should have played AOC at release where people were grinding mobs like gold farmers in order to level up.

Also all fanboys have a point.. a lot of content is a good thing. if you are outleveling content skip quests, a lot of them so that you don't outlevel your storyline.

"A lot of content is a great thing.  No one is arguing about that, so please don't try to make the argument about that.

The argument is essentially that it feels like the game tries to force you to play a specific way.  If you just want to chill and do warzones for a while, then you have the consequence of having to do a bunch of grey story quests until they "catch up" with your level.

On the other hand, if you want to see the story as quick as you can, you are out of luck too because you will be underlevel and you need to do some "side content" to get to the appropriate level.

The argument is not that there is "too much content" the argument is that players don't really have the freedom to experience the content in the order they wish without some kind of inconvenience."

I agree alot of content is a great thing, rather im comenting on the "kind" of content. By including a full class by class story line with a lvl requirment  Bioware has made a rather narrow lvling progreasion we must follow, we were discusing the ramifications of that not "Complaining about to much content" lolz

As for sharing your class storyline with other people, yes it is possible however either you have already lvl'ed that class and experienced the stroy line or its a bit of a spoiler if you havent.

I might add if player decisions were truly dynamic and changed the story progresion (As advertised but not delivered.) this would not be an issue, however that is not the case.

Like others have said there are ways to artificially inflate the difficulty of the quest.  Certainly not ideal, as a scaling class quest would be better, but you can lose your companion or take off your gear.  When in doubt, take off your pants image  Also a useful strategy IRL

I'm In the exact opposite boat, I am getting my ass kicked by my storyline right now.  I guess i was a little antsy and went to Balmora to quickly. I even leveled up cuz when I first tried it I was almost to 18, and I still get raped.  I'm gonna have to group up just to beat it .haha

Are people really complaing that there are to many choices when leveling in this game?  I guess developers just can't win with some people.  Release a game with narrow leveling paths with just enough to make it 1 to max and get jumped on for not making enough content.  Make a game where there is plenty of content 1 to max and people complain they can't enjoy the entire game.

SW:TOR is the first MMO I have played in a long time that at launch gave you a more than enough solo content to go from 1 to max level.  I don't even think WoW had this much extra solo content at launch where you could skip whole zones and just do the class quests every few planets.  I know for a fact you can skip 1 out of every 4-5 planets in SW:TOR and still be at level for content if you like.  Well you can assuming you don't invis past everything and finish the bonus quests.

I have been thinking once I hit 50 with my second toon my thrid toon I won't do any non class solo quests past level 10 or so.  I am going to see if I can level 100% 10-50 off PVP, Space missions, class quests and group content.

I've only encountered 1 puzzle based quest in SWTOR, and it wasn't particularly easy.. it was also a heroic.. which isn't ideal when solving a puzzle.

1 puzzle with multiple players trying to solve at the same time ='s not fun.  I was able to complete it though.  It is repeatable. I will not be repeating it.

Not really.  You have a chance to steal something (collect),   or kill a dragon (kill)  or defeat soldiers in a castle,  and every now and then you may get a puzzle or two,  but nothing extraordinary.   Most of them can be divided into kill, collect, or fedex.

While this isnt enough to make me unsub i do belive what we like about MMO is that they bring us toogeather and this mechanic inhibits that..

my wife and i are in the same boat. if we're doing the same quests, we split up anyway. like, she'll take the left side of the path and i'll take the right. i brought this up the other week and i believe the conclusion was that it was ridiculous of me to expect to be playing an mmo with other people.

What makes me angry is the level restriction later on.... when you just want to do your story, but have to slog through 8 - 10 hours of other quests you've seen just so you are able to complete that next story quest.

Personally, I think they should have unlocked story quests altogether...  made them separate, without a level requirement, and have them scale to your level.

I think the point is so that once you finish your story you are ready for the endgame. I have a feeling that if it was made to scale a lot of people would do the story only and then quit.

    Just so boring.....

I leveled up on PVP because it's the only thing that seems dynamic about the game.

Even the Flashpoints are boring because you hear the same bullshit Voice overs each time that you don't want to repeat them.

I wonder what game you're looking forward to, because every game with any objective or quest will have you doing the same thing.

Skyrim has the most fun quests that get you doing so much more.

Not really.  You have a chance to steal something (collect),   or kill a dragon (kill)  or defeat soldiers in a castle,  and every now and then you may get a puzzle or two,  but nothing extraordinary.   Most of them can be divided into kill, collect, or fedex.

Most quests I played in Skyrim were so fun and very different. The end goal might be killing something or collecting something but the actual gameplay and story was very different to how it is setup in MMO quests. I mean the whole Theives Guild questline is amazing, I even had random quests where like I arm wrestled someone and then woke up in a 2 hour long dungeon.

In SWTOR it is "run to the objective marker and kill 10 mobs and run back".... I've experienced hardly and of that in Skyrim. Even if there is a quest like that I'll run into 10 quests on the way which are totally crazy and different.
