we have a winner.
how many people here where given warnings for political content being agaist the rules of conduct and now they post this on thier front page news.
bunch of hypocrites.
Things like SOPA and PIPA affect mmorpg gaming directly so should not be 'shunned off' as a 'polical'. It is not talk about War or health care or taxes after all.
Besies giving warning and closing off topics and then creating news by yourselfs just because it got 'loud and fashionable in internetz' is LAME and make mmorpg.com creditibility BAD thing.
So mmorpg.com staff , watch out next time. Review your policies if necessary.
Yeah, I was the first to post about this here weeks ago and although I wasn't given any type of punishment my thread was locked for being too 'political'. After several PM's between a MMORPG staff member and myself and several others(Who will remain nameless to protect their privacy) I was told it was too political in nature and would never be allowed here. Now here we are discussing it in the News Section?
It's the second news article on SOPA. They made the first shortly after those threads got locked. I'd say those threads helped bring attention to the subject on this site and how it could effect it. Add in emails, all the other gaming sites voicing their opinions, and news articles that are all over the place. MMORPG.com is still sticking to their guns and these two news topics are the only place to discuss SOPA.
The fact that they came to realize just how important these bills are is a good thing and fueling discussion on it/ them is great.
SOPA absolutely must be stopped.
Protect IP Act PIPA must also die.
This is all politics. Politics getting out of control. But remember politicans have names and we elect them. They are not dictators. They can be voted out. We the people need to wake up and Vote these criminal politicians out. If you are over 18 you need to Register to Vote and then Vote in the election to get rid of the these guys.
Don't let a bunch of stupid old men ruin the Internet. Write these guys names down and vote them out.
Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) SOPA supporter
Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) PIPA supporter
Full list of stupid and corupt old men in congress and the bribes they took. Please VOTE these criminals out of office. Your Vote Does makes a difference.
Also in the Presidential election there has been only one Candidate that has openly spoken out against SOPA and PIPA.
The Man is RON PAUL. Vote for Ron Paul in 2012 he is the only one can Save the Internet.
Since the US basically owns sites like .com and .net this will affect more sites than most expect.
Politics - the opposite of innovation
Sopa already failed, they pulled out yesterday. Pipa still want to have a go?
I don't know how SOPA will achieve this goal. Most internet sites are implicitly related to each other, with a few clicks you can navigate from fusion reactors to vegeterian noodles. Even worse the content of a web page may alter dynamically thus it may display infringing content or not from time to time. If SOPA goes that deep it may force existing web sites to monitor their content but this seems an impossible task to me, especially for sites that have forums and addon robots, like this one.
SOPA won't kill piracy at all. It will remain ineffective while effectively screwing everyone else over.
If there was a bill that effectively stop piracy that the experts agree with and has little effect on the people and the internet, then that bill is the one we should be looking for.
Originally posted by troublmakerThere is no such thing as an unrestricted freedom or rights. Many Americans think they have it, but they do not.Take for example this classic case. It is the middle of the night and I'm in a Jewish neighborhood. As an expression of my freedom of speech I yell at the top of my lunges "THE HOLOCAUST IS A LIE BUT IT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED YOU KILLED JESUS!" Now I keep repeating this obscenity over and over and over and over. I do it from 12AM to 8AM. At this point I decide to go home and sleep.Am I really so free to do this? Would you as a citizen of the United States really ALLOW me to violate someone like this to protect MY freedom?Of course not.
We know there is no such thing as totally free speech, but some things go too far, and this law very obviously does. If you read the law, I don't see how anyone could miss it.
As for your quote up there, that's actually legal in America. The only reason you would be arrested is if, because it was the middle of the night, you were arrested for disturbing the peace. If you did that exact same thing during the day and didn't use a megaphone or something, it'd be totally legal.
That's right. It's legal to yell at Jews that the holocaust never happened, but it would be illegal to keep them awake while doing it.
My point is this: Laws usually say specific things, but when there is any room for interpretation, different people are always going to have different ideas. This is why things have changed with different Justices in the Supreme Court. New people had new interpretations of the law. A law like this one can be interpreted to mean they can shut down any website (from the vast majority of people, who don't usually know how to bypass DNS blocking), for almost any reason. And on most sites, this one included, someone could post something, knowing it broke the law, and thereby forcing that website down. People could attack this site, or Youtube, or really any website with user-submitted content, and those sites would be taken down, through no fault of their own.
It is a poorly written law, and even if it had been written well, would not have gotten to the heart of this issue, which is this: Pirates are costing people money.
It is too easy, and even with this law, would remain too easy, for people to pirate. That is why most people do it. There is no challenge in doing it, and so why pay, or even waste time leaving your house to go buy something, when you can download it and have it for free in ten minutes? Until you stop that, pirates won't stop. And even if you could, they won't stop.
Criminals won't stop doing crime. They are criminals. This is as stupid as shutting down a gun store because someone who murdered someone bought their gun there. Or shutting down a sporting goods store because someone bought there the tools they needed to commit a robbery.
It's madness. It is complete and utter madness. I really don't see how anyone could disagree with me if they have actually read the law.
"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

YES!!!!! SOPA and PIPA both need to be stopped in their tracks...If the content providers are so worried about piracy and what not then why not attack the pirates source of income the banks that they use and so forth. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law that implements two 1996 treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures (commonly known as digital rights management or DRM) that control access to copyrighted works. It also criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright itself. In addition, the DMCA heightens the penalties for copyright infringement on the Internet. Passed on October 12, 1998, by a unanimous vote in the United States Senate and signed into law by President Bill Clinton on October 28, 1998, the DMCA amended Title 17 of the United States Code to extend the reach of copyright, while limiting the liability of the providers of on-line services for copyright infringement by their users. On May 22, 2001, the European Union passed the Copyright Directive or EUCD, which addresses some of the same issues as the DMCA. The DMCA's principal innovation in the field of copyright, the exemption from direct and indirect liability of internet service providers and other intermediaries (Title II of the DMCA), was separately addressed, and largely followed, in Europe by means of the separate Electronic Commerce Directive. (Unlike U.S. federal laws and regulations, the execution of European Union directives usually requires separate legislation by or within each of the Union's member countries.)
You see we already have laws and treaties in place that address the issue of piracy, copyright infringement, and intellectual property. All the Government needs to do is enforce the laws that are already on the books....SIGH!!!!
SOPA is a bad idea, it needs to be stopped, and if anyone says otherwise, it's because they either a) have money involved in SOPA; or b) they have been lied to and need a severe lesson in truth.
Some doofus on here once told me that they don't need to worry about SOPA because they're not a thief. It had to be the best example of gross ignorance I've seen on the subject.

It didn't fail completely, it's just been shelved and scheduled for a "rewrite". The big companies will try to get the gov't to slip it past us sometime in the future, but with people watching these bills like a hawk now, it won't be easy.
Maybe MMORPG.com should jointhe Strike!!
Originally posted by veratutazz Originally posted by GTwander What's going to happen is that they will use the US as a test ground for this, and then we will be no different than China and many Middle Eastern countries that aren't allowed access outside their network. Yes, it will slip into our own intranet, where viewing outside material is criminalized (regardless of if it's porn or network tv you're watching), and used to keep subversive elements *out*, culturally stunting us. I really do believe this is the beginning steps of a cruel nationilization effort, but with the interests of corporate media in mind. After all, they can make sure you pay for streaming videos if you simply can't find a proxy in Denmark. Other countries will catch on, and all will be suck.
I feel a little sad inside when I read all this text-walling hateraiding on SOPA and PIPA. Look, it is real simple:
And, for the record, the "they wouldn't pay for it anyways" argument is a hysterical red herring. I know *WAY* more people that steal/pirate in my professional *AND* private life not because they are criminals, not because they are 'bad people', not because they are 'poor' or "wouldn't buy it anyways" ... They do it because it is fall-down-blind easy to do. There are next to zero deterrents, "everybody does it", "everybody knows how", and it is "no big deal".
Do you honestly think humans would pay good money for food if it was equally easy to just grab the same food for free all the time and it was only minorly socially unacceptable?????
"No person shall... be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law."
That's in the very body of the document that our representitives in Congress have sworn thier OATH's to uphold.
This really isn't a question of Congress being too "old fashioned" or not being "techies"...this is a question of them not being "OLD FASHIONED ENOUGH."
They are forgeting or choosing to ignore one of the most basic principles they've sworn to uphold and upon which this country was founded.
They are also ignoring the most basic principle upon which Americas Justice system is based upon....presumption of innocence in absence of evidence to the contrary.
You don't discard fundemental principles like that just because they occasionaly prove slightly inconvenience.
There is an absolute and well established solution for this problem ALREADY has been around since long before the internet.
You think someone is engaged in ongoing illegal activity, violating your property rights, and doing serious immediate harm to you.
No problem...goto a Court, present your evidence. If a Judge BELIEVES your complaint is legitimate and based in both fact and law, he'll grant a temporary injunction against the offending party.
That injunction allows for everything that SOPA/PIPA and DMCA does and more.
What it doesn't do is allow for an easly abused end run around the Justice system...
or to deprive people of Liberty, Property or Expression without at least presenting a shred of evidence to an IMPARTIAL party.
or to presume someone is guilty in the absence of evidence to the contrary.
or to avoid any responsibility for being held accountable for making KNOWINGLY FALSE, unfounded, negligent or frivilous claims of wrong-doing that end up depriving someone of thier rights without being held accountable for doing so.
SOPA should be destroyed, the end. Stopping PIRACY is one thing, but controlling the internet is going too far. JUST SAY NO TO SOPA!!!!!!
Originally posted by Suraknar Maybe MMORPG.com should jointhe Strike!! http://sopastrike.com/
If SOPA isn't stopped then websites like this one would be blocked by content providers. Even a single screenshot violation could cause the blockage of this IP on US soil. That really takes it to a completely different level when thinking about SOPA and PIPA. I personally enjoy this site no matter how many times I get banned for stating obvious things to ignorant people. I still come back to read review and enjoy the services provided. It would truly scare me to see either of these bills go through after the FCC already declared that net neutrality would be upheld.
Originally posted by Loke666 Originally posted by ForumTroll I'm too lazy to actually read the bill so I will just say this. No matter how many citizens or companies oppose this it is ultimately up to the elected officials. So getting our panties in a bunch over what this bill "could" mean or "does" mean is pretty useless. I know that I will not be letting this effect and part of my life, nor will it keep me up at night worried for my life. If i broke down and thoroughly disected every bill in legislation, it still wouldn't change a damn thing. The simple fact is Piracy DOES need to be stopped and if it takes one failed bill or some kind of mistake in order to better mend the future of the internet then so be it. You cant make a beef stew without slaughtering a few cows first. Eventually PETA will step in and be like wait wait wait a minute. At least kill them repectfully!
Restricting freedom of speach is never a good idea no matter how good your reasons for it might sound.
I agree that restricting freedom of speech is not a good idea, Although I don't think stopping piracy is restricting freedom of speech. If this bill has other components in it that does restrict freedom of speech then it will be dealt with because it is against the constitution. However, just because we are trying to protect peoples freedom to believe and preach what they want doesnt mean that they can steal something and call it their own. downloading a video game and music that people worked hard to create has nothing to do with freedom of speech.
And just letting whatever happens because regular people can't have a say is a misstake. The elected official gets elected by us and if enough people protest they often do as their voters want because otherwise they wont get re-elected.
When your choice of electing officials is between a bunch of crooked people to begin with then it doesn't matter who you choose in the end the outcome is the same. Government breeds corruption, Power breeds corruption. This is why I don't vote. If my choice is between cutting off my hand and cutting of my foot why would i choose. Regardless of the outcome I don't want to lose any limbs and it has no benefit to me whatsoever.
The internet does not get better because governments censors it, censorship is worse than piracy and can lead to pretty nasty stuff in the long run. If you give a goverment the right to censor the net as it see fitting that will happen sooner or later and once it started you can't stop it.
I agree with this as well but what I am referring to is not censorship, but stopping the use of pirated material. Whatever the Bill is referring to is completely different from my thoughts on the situation.
There are better ways to stop piracy than to censor things. They have tried to close down sites like piratebay a long time and even if they would succeed it still wouldn't stop pirates. Here is Sweden most people don't download music anymore because we got a good legal alternative instead in Spotify. People don't pirate copy MMOs because you pay for server space instead of just the game. Companies needs to think like that instead of just raising their prices and blame piracy.
Again, I am not supporting this Bill, what I am saying is that it is a first step to our country doing something to limit pirating. Whether in the end the government requires that companies take there own precautions, or if they find a solution somewhere within the law doesn't matter to me. There are many steps that bills take before they are even considered, many rewrites take place before bills are passed. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes another 10 years for somthing like this to even meet the requirements to make it through.
"People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People's heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool."
Yes, on other hand it would be intresting to see when Americans finaly stopped whining and used those guns...
There is no solution to stop piracy, dark-web is already working, you can't stop piracy unless you control everything or can look after everyone... Only solution is new bussiness models, first step is making buying or lisecing easier than piracy, second which I hope to be seen in future is making people want to pay. Afterall it's natural and good in capitalism for out-dated companies and bussiness models to die.
SOPA and PIPA is just one more step in control and power to corporations and money. It's natural stop competition reach monopoly and make more money. Or just grab some power and stop opposition...
It realy is amazeing that a law that could inherantly ruin livelyhoods and in all likely hood could sadly lead someone who has effectively lost everything into the ultimate sacrifice, gets passed by idiots who prob can not even send an Email with out the help of a secretary.
Also do they really think that this will stop piracy if so they need their heads looking at,Anonymous are legion simple as that and when they have a cause every hacker in the free world will hit America every site that supports SOPA,we will see the dawn of cyber warfare on a world scale not to mention the weakening of security by bypassing protocols that make the net as secure as possible.
Furthermore if this passes i suggest every American take a copy of the constitution walk in the street and burn it en masse as this may then wake up the masses of sheep who are slowly been lead down the Orwellian path by there elected goverment servants, because after that bill your freedom will be no more how does Facist states of Amerca sound to all those idiots who only see Stop piracy instaed of curtail freedom of speech (kill Wiki Leaks) as it really infers !!
