I dislike Star Wars in general. What does this game offer me?

So far i've managed to distance myself from all the threads and screenshots and discussions,  out of the fear of my inner George Lucas-hating troll being unleashed upon the general public.   I have a supreme dislike of the entire bloated carcass of the Star Wars universe for my own reasons,  but thats not what i'd like to discuss.

I'd like to talk about this game,  which has slowly peaked my curiosity.

I make it a point 'not' to auto-hate on any game until i've picked it up and played it with my own hands.  ...even one from this particular background.   I'm not completley unreasonable.

I was even able to stomach Knights of the old republic due to my love of RPG type games.

I 'want' to like this game.  Its new, shiny,  and i've heard it even has some space shooter mechanics in it.   I absolutley love space shooters.

So the question is the same as the topic title.   Coming into this MMO with no expectations or prior knowledge,  and a chip on my shoulder the size of an Emperial battlecruiser,  what would this game offer to dazzle and wow me?

How does it distance itself from every other MMO i've tried over the past decade and a half?

Wow..if you feel that strongly then sorry this game will offer you nothing because even if you find something enjoyable the star wars theme wouldn't let you. If someone is unaware of star wars and ask the same question i can give him some tips but for someone who dispise Star Wars like you do..all i can say is find something you really enjoy. After all it is all about having fun.

The major difference is the excellent voice over.  It really breathes life into the quests and you don't feel like you're grinding as much.  It's a very involving and cinematic experience as long as you don't constantly try and skip over it like some folks.

The open world pvp holds a lot of promise, too.  Most mmos don't implement open world pvp that well.

“They’ve spent more money making the Old Republic than James Cameron spent on Avatar. @$#$ you not. More than $ 300 million! Can you believe that? And you know what they’re most proud of? This is the kicker. They are most proud of the sound. No seriously. Something like a 20Gig installation, and most of it is voiceover work. That’s the best they have. The rest of the game is a joke. EA knows it and so does George Lucas, they’re panicking, and so most of Mythic has already been cannibalized to work in Austin on it. Old Republic will be one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs from EA….”

If you disliked KOTOR then you will most likely not enjoy this game. Granted, thats only my opinion, if you truly want to find out i guess its best to wait for the reviews to fall in and read up on it.

Are we cheerleaders now? OP, this game will offer you nothing. It oozes Star Wars, from the sound effects down to the retro facial hair everyone seems to be sporting. Pick another game.

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

The twilight series annoys the crap out of me.  If they made an awesome MMO out of it, I still wouldn't be interested.  Why would you care about your character?  Or care about doing anything, in a world that you despise?

If you don't like a world setting, it's an automatic loss, as that's a big part of any MMO, if not the biggest.

Are we talking the sort of voice overs they had in Everquest 2?

    I'm alright with PvP.

....though the word 'grind' worries me a bit..  grind as in 'kill 10 of these and return to me',   or grind as in  'spending 40 hours killing one type of mob for a 1% chance of this loot drop' ?

I can only chuckle at this statement *Chuckles softly* Most amusing post i've read in a long long time.

    Star Wars

    Indeed. +1

Almost like me asking what does a Twilight movie have to offer me when I despise Twilight?

    You are trolling sir.

That's why your kind will never appreciate a game like this.  You're the "phat lewts and status" crowd.  In order to truly appreciate this game, you actually have to have an attention span.  Your loss.

    Oh god.  Here they come.

I apologize for this seeming to be a troll thread,  it honestly wasn't.   I was just curious.

Mods, please lock/delete this if you would be so kind,  before the whole thing bursts into flames.

Well I dont think its possible to play a game if you dont like the setting, you will always be haunted by it and ultimately hate it. My  girlfriend wasnt much into SW but it wasnt the case she didnt like it, she just simply didnt get into it and she now enjoys it a bit more and the game.

How to answer your own question - Guide - v1.2

    1. Go to http://www.swtor.com/

    2. Hover mouse cursor over "Game Info" and then left click on the items listed in step 3

    3. Read: Game Overview, The Holonet, Game Systems, New Player Guide, and Game Manual. When done proceed to step 4

    4. Hover mouse cursor over Community, then left click on Forum, read what other are saying about the game.

    5. Watch alot of youtube videos for the game.

After you have completed this guide you should be able to answer your own question, instead of relying on someone else to talk you into playing the game. If you still cant, then post this topic on the official SWTOR forums, not here.

Have you ever actually watched the Twilight series from start? It can be hard to enter a series midseason or during later sesons. I know I haven't watched a single episode,  too little time and too many good TV-series to follow.

I did watch "Being Human (UK)", which I suppose has a similar setting in the sense that it includes supernatural beings such as werewolves and vampires trying to live in disguise as normal human beeings. "Being Human" was though a  far more mature series, if I am to believe some reviews. and I enjoyed it a lot.

So why exactly do you dislike the Twillight series and anything  associated with it? I disliked the immaturity and lack of self-respect that different adult female fans display in different media events; however, that's about it. Rest I don't have an opinion about since I have never actually watched a single episode.

Hahahaha.  I think you are confused. Twilight is a bunch of crap books / movies about sparkling vampires and  homoerotic werewolves. Not a TV show. I find it amusing that you are defending something that you dont even know about.

You might be thinking of the Vampire Diaries, which is angsty as well, but nowhere near as bad as the Stephanie Meyer trainwreck of literature.

Also you are missing the point. Robsolf is saying he wouldnt bother playing a MMO in a world he has zero interest in, using the example of Twilight, even if it was a brilliant game. Hes not bashing Twilight, hes just saying its a world he doesnt personally care about.

Back to the OP - my partner plays SWTOR and loves it, but generally isnt very interested in Star Wars. But thats more indifference rather than hate. If you absolutely hate the Star Wars universe, you wont really enjoy the magic moments of seeing your favourite planets and races come to life - like your first time chatting to a Hutt or visiting a casino on Nar Shadaa or looking up in awe of Corusant, and it will be hard for you to invest into the world.

It's the 'kill 10 of these and return to me' type of game. Figured I'd answer since everyone else is too busy going on about twilight or trying to dress you up as a troll.

I'm referring to the book and movie series, which takes pretty much everything I've ever liked about the supernatural world, chucks it out the window, leaving it pretty much a love triangle which includes a 16 year old girl, a dog, and a 100+ year old man.

    Nothing...

Haha really though, its more story focused. Seeing as you don't like Starwars though, its something you probably won't like very much.

Ah ya, I assumed people were comparing tv-series with tv-series in the reviews; I suppose they were just drawing parallels due to similar settings.  The movies I knew existed through advertisment.

Have you read the books though? I haven't and I cannot therefore say I hate it. From experience, I've noticed I have very few interests in common with teenage and preteen females and since that seems to be the largest fanbase, I have reason to think that there is a significant risk that I will not like reading the books if I choose to read them. However, I cannot be sure and I can also not be sure what exactly I will dislike and if there is anything I will like.

    -----------------------------------

To the topic starter: why do you disilike Star Wars? I think that is an important question to elaborately answer if people are going to give you direct useful advice.

    Do you dislike the characters?

Do you dislike the sci-fi components?

Do you dislike the light sabers?

Do you dislike the different races?

Do you dislike the concept of the "force"?

    Etc.
