I REALLY wish people would get off their high horse and try Rift now. I agree it didn't have a whole lot of content at release, but it did have enough for the standard player. More content, and a lot more since then, was quickly pushed out and for some that was too late, but I encourage people to try it now.

Those that only played for a few weeks or even a month just don't understand how much has changed. All they're doing is putting a sour taste in people's mouths that really want to try it. I can agree that the leveling can be better, but it has gotten better and that is the only real negative I have with the game. If people would just give it a chance and see what the game is about at lvl 50 then were wouldn't be the negativity in the air.

People say WoW-clone, but it's not. Maybe to those that didn't give the game an honest try. It offers so much more than WoW does. To me, it's not a wow clone unless you ignore everything the game offers, but even doing that it shouldn't even be really considered a WoW-clone but just another typical MMORPG. Rift IMO is the game WoW should aspire to and not the other way around... it's quickly breaking the mold of the MMORPG genre. And while there are soon to be other games with a few new features, it doesn't change the fact that Rift is a great game.

I say yes to Rift for MMO of the year. I admittedly enjoyed my 3 months in the game. Saying Rift is the MMO of the year the really lets people know how little 2011 had to offer for MMO's, it was good , but nothing to write home about in my personal opinion. For some people I'm sure it's amazing, opinions vary.

You want RvR in a two faction game. Automatically your opinion is mute.

I have Played Daoc (best pvp MMo of the last 10 years), Warhammer for almost 3 years, etc. But you are right i know nothing about RvR.  2 factions RvR is possible, the real problem is when the system fail. You look like an AION veteran, so then yes, in a game like AION, a 100% zerg fest MMO, 2 factions RvR wont work. Rift is not even an RvR MMO, so you cant take that as an example. You need a system where the population balance is not a big deal in the RvR zone, so even if you are outnumbered you still can find a way to fight and even win the battle, Warhammer have great concepts about that, but it was too late, however looks like bw and swtor is in the right track with what they did on Ilum, is a game where the guerrilla warfare works. so let see whats happen in a Month or two with that. Again, if you are an AIon veteran, then plz, dont reply, you have no idea what the PvP is, even worse if you come from Rift.

    What was there this year?

    DC Universe

    RIFT

    SWTOR

    That it?

All suck, there is no winner but SWTOR will probably sell the most.

I enjoyed Rift.  But TOR will almost certainly be winning most awards that the two games end up competing for.  Rift is WoW + Rifts.  TOR is WoW + eight fully voiced single player BioWare RPG stories.  Not going to be a contest for most award granting bodies.

2011 was a sad year for MMOs.  Earthrise should have been a great sandbox but it turned out there was no sand, Xsyon should have had big budget investors to make the dev's dream a reality but didn't, and Rift was just bland.

DCUO is okay.  Actually, I prefer it to Rift, but it still doesn't have that staying power.

I did like Rift's soul system okay, but everything else put me to sleep.

Rift's master mode dungeons isnt remotely original or new, its just adding a 3rd layer to heroic.  Oooh, innovative!  hey, lets recycle this dungeon a THIRD TIME.  WoW is adding something called challenge mode, but its nothing remotely like Rift.  Its a very lame concept regardless (who thought spped runs were fun in the first place)

And we knew about dynamic scaling events in GW2 before Rift.

I like Trion. I just wish they would make a game with even a single ounce of innovation...........why do all the innovative companies have to be so horrible?

o and ofcoarse it shoudl get game of the year.....this was  the worst years in MMO gaming since........last year

    Playing: PO, EVE
    Waiting for: WoD
Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO

if we are talking 2010-2011 ..ya sure why not..it was a slow year in mmorpg genra and nothing else was truly better in that year..ya they maybe going to lose subs..later..but for 2010-2011 sure why not..the game was super polished when it was released and when a company listens to their fan base it is always a ++++ if they dont get mmo of this year trion is sefl should get a award for something..they have done a great job with their mmo..more than most and of resent past

What do you think was the best year for MMOs?

Oh stop this nonsense its Wow that wins, i dont like it, you dont like it but it is still the big boy on the block, so it lost a million subs it has 10 million more give or take a mill, the sad part of this is that every other company has failed to deliver a long term sub retaining product even Rift which i agree was very polished but pretty dull.

No game will be for everyones liking, including Rift, but its hard to deny that Rift was very well done.

Rift released with the most PvE endgame content of any MMO ever by a long shot.  Releasing with one 20 man raid, 10 end game dungeons, 2 world raid bosses, faction dailies. raid rifts, collections, achievements and Rift and invasions.  Since release the game has grown quite dramaticaly adding a second and third 20 man raid, three 10 man raids, more raid rifts, Ember Isle, AA's, a new 5 man dungeon with 11 bosses, new game mechanics with sourcewells, new graphics.

What Rift did right was release a ton of endgame content with polsih and quality.  What it was lacking was a narrow game in terms of scope especially leveling 1-50.  Leveling took 50-100 hours to reach max level so the focus on endgame wasa probably the correct call. But i can see many people being disspointed in the leveling process.  But thats the state of the genere.  Look at SWTOR where people can reach max level in 30-50 hours played.  But unlike SWTOR Rift released with actual tested endgame content.  Expert dungeons were tested for5 months prior to release and the forst two raid zones were tested for 3 months  in Alpha.  Compare that to SWTOR's two weeks of endgame testing.

If your a crafter , builder or veetran EQ1/Uo player Rift may be lacking in scope.  But they are adding to the game.  Ember ISles is huge, A new continet is on the way that will double the land mass.  Housing is on the way.

If your a PvP player Rift is probably lacking for you.  But then so are all MMOs.  Maybe After Trion is done with hiousinga nd the new continent they can adress the open world PvP issues.  They have many Warhammer/Daoc devs on their team as they are a manly a mix of EQ1/EQ2/VG devs along with Daoc/Warhammer devs.  Open world and DAOC type keeps may be somewhere down the road.  But I doubt they will address it until they can do it right.  Thier philosphy has bento go small but do everything well.  Then add more quality content.  The opposite of the Vanguard go big but everything is poor quality philosophy.

Rift is quite a remarkable game.  The polish. quality and endgame content are all amazing.  The raiding is fun, hard and well done.  Certainly the best MMO to release since WoW and it shows in the retention figures.  The game still has over 50 active servers.  Which is an amazing amount.  Consider EQ2 at its height was doing very well with 16 servers.  LOTR had hmm was it 8 or 11 NA serrvers.  Certainly much better than AoC/Aion?warhammer type game that quickly dropped to 2-4 servers. People are foooled by WoW numbers no western games attract more than 200k players.  There are lots of players that buy MMO boxes but not many that will stick with any game. other than WoW, longer than 2-3 months.  I guess the qustion is where will Rift  solidify?  Gradually they are lsoing people or people areplaying less.  Will they end up with 30 Serevrs, or 15-20.  Either scenario would be pretty huge success for a game that most people had never even heard of prior to release.  Consider this 3 months before release Rift only had 10k total forum members and they sold  over a million boxes at release.

The game is already is a success.  The fact that they are putting so much money back into the game in new content said that Trion believes investing in Rift for the long run will pay off.  It is nice to see a compnay actually invest in its game rather than abandoing it quickly after release like so many other new games.

Rift has had a strong run this year and the developers have shown that they plan to keep supporting the game strongly.

So I could definitely see such an award going to Rift.

TOR is only just coming out, it still needs to prove it's longevity and continued support.

I think the rush is to get TOR the award from the fans because they know GW2 is on the way and it will dominate 2012!!

If this becomes the standered for MMOs then just kill me now. its the "i want it now" crowd thats killing these games. there no time investment in any of these game anymore. no longevity. i hope the tides are changeing back to how things use to be and from the looks of how many "sandbox" games are on the horizion, looks like that could be the case. im looking for a game to spend some time with not jump back and forth from game to game. games like Rift are just bad.

My vote is for Rift. Decent game that I will continue to play. I just hope TOR doesn't bleed it dead but odds are, it will (at least the low population servers).

There seem to be replies here that are discussing a different topic.  Many of those replying are treating this as a "NEW mmorpg of the year" award.  I would agree with that since everything else that released thus far was garbage.  However, I interpret the phrase "mmorpg of the year" as the best mmorpg on the market at the moment.  I don't know that Rift even cracks the top 5 on that list.

wrong. i played that game for 6 mouths. i wanted to quit after 2 weeks. but since i paid i might as well finish out my sub. with each passing mouth it got worse and worse. i had to relearn how to play my classes over and over and over again. cleric/mage/rogue rebuild ALL THE DAMN TIME! i was max lvl in like 7 days. the time one needs to spend per zone is just redonkuless. you were in and out of zones very fast. racing to end game because the game between 1-49 means DICK! you get to 50 to sit in your home city to que up for instance after instance doing them over and over and over and OVER!!! no real PVP or CRAFTING to speak of. the game is just horrable all around. no redeaming qualities to speek of.

Rift feels very much the same now as at launch.  1-49 is identical except Rift variety 1-49 has been completely replaced by the same 3 christmas rifts across every zone.

Everything at endgame is still suited towards the daily model.  Its all rinse and repeat.
