Sorry but it's just not worth it, especially when the game is so much more than just the personal story. SW:TOR seems to have a greater emphasis on story, then any other feature in the game, which is why Bioware have poored most of their efforts into giving SW:TOR's story that cinematic feel. Whereas GW2 really doesn't focus on any one feature, so ArenaNet has spread out their efforts across a number of different avenues, so that the game will be great all round, but not particularly amazing in any one area.

Replying to both posts to make it shorter.

I've been waiting for GW2 ever since it's been first announced, which was slightly after EotN was announced (2007).

I don't like playing unfinished games, but I would play GW as it is NOW, if I only I could.

But I remember reading how the developers want GW2 to be not only the best MMORPG but also the best game.

Gameplay is the most important, I agree, but I think ArenaNet focuses a lot on the story.

In fact, I'd say the devs are doing all they can to make the game immersive also by changing their storytelling methods.

The way "quests" are "given" to the players became a whole new game mechanics, for example, "minor" events that would maybe be covered by a popup window with text in GW1 have their own cutscenes in GW2.

They've also added more RP elements (personal biography, the reaction of NPCs to the PC's reputation, more paths in the personal story, extensive voice acting for PC and NPC lines). All those innovations took a lot of resources and effort, not to mention that they were changed numerous times in the course of the years.

All of them are connected to delivering a story.

So the third tier cutscenes are fine as they are, but they are not particularly immersive.

A few camera swaps might do a lot to emphasize all the work that already went into these fairly unimportant cutscenes.

Of course, at one point the developers will have to stop tinkering with the game and release it, because there's always something that can be improved.

Certain things will have to wait after the release, and I hope these cutscenes will get on the list too. After all, lip-syncing during cutscenes came very late in GW.

BTW, I don't understand why they'd have to redo the cutscenes for 4 different languages. I meant that they'd have to add more cameras to their virtual "room,” maybe add a few more painted backgrounds, not change the animations or lines. As I said, the animations are good. The static camera does them a disservice.

    EDIT: Corrected a mistake.

The VA was absolutely superb. And that's about it actually.

Why isn't this taking within the game world though?

Felt like I was watching a 15 year old JRPG.

The cutscene is O.K. I'd rather see the decision based interaction like SWtOR be implemented in things as simple as thisso you can get an array of different responses that would affect where your character would go in the game. But that's something for the future let's hope.

Overall, a good job. Loving what I'm seeing. Keep it up.

i personally think the voice acting is terrible when you compare to the likes of BioWare, and its hardly cinematic its emmersion breaking. Still beats most games out there so good try!

I'm looking forward to the game, but I have met that healer before, in many an MMO.  Or her spirtual sisters, anyway.  And that speech of hers always leads to the mighty hero fetching and carrying like a farmboy.

I really enjoyed the article. I also really liked the first video. In the second video, however, Walters seems amused, but it seems like an intense situation. It didn't fit with what I thought should be happening. Of course, I did really like the player character's outfit. I want one. I just love the clothes in Guild Wars.

    WTF? No subscription fee?

Hate it. Cutscenes don't belong at all in a MMO, it should all be happening *in the world*.

I wish they saved the money and spent it on making the gameplay better.

Of course, that would mean more painted backgrounds and a lot more time to create the scenes, but I think the end result would be worth it, as long as it fit the general game concept. It would appear more active, and the characters' gestures would be emphasized.

    I would rather this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNtwF6UjkR0&feature=related

Than something that looks like it came out of a mmo made 10 years ago lol, freaking painful just looking at it.

The animations are as bad as it gets lol.

SWTOR can keep it's cinamatics to be honest.image

Doesnt matter...gameplay is what matters...i had a blast during the beta and certainly will during the official game....

As for GW2 seriously all gw players cares is PVP thats why we want this game for the pvp..so they better focus on that instead trying to give us a crappy story or terrible voice acting like this vid

Besides lets be honest u really think GW2 in terms of subs will own swtor?

keep dreaming boy...the ONLY reason gw2 will do fine "the first 3 month i guess" its because its a f2p game nothing else.

lmfao! what utter nonsense  you are talking ,seriuosly you are better off staying with swtor dude.image

    I really can't take you seriously.image

What...that gw in overall is a pvp game? is it so hard to understand?

And y certainly staying with swtor....u should know by now that p2p always--->f2p

If u think that gw2 will last long enough  vs swtor,TSW and tera than keep dreaming, the only reason it will do well at start its because it is a f2p game nothing less nothing more

I guess I have been spoiled by TOR. These cutscenes, while an improvement over the vast majority of other MMO's, still lacks naturality and expressiveness from the speakers. Their gestures, their eye contact (or lack of), their static positioning, their pauses between speeches all make the dialogue less than stellar. Also, having the characters talk always facing the same camera angle and zoom make it rather awkward, further depriving it of believability. The lack of dialogue choices are also worth noting.

Still, it's to be expected. They can't and won't invest that much money on making a cinematic experience. Their priorities are elsewhere.
