we actually had some awesome off topic discussions prior to the R&P section. Like, 7 years before the R&P section was even created, the off-topic section was very thought provoking and fun to read and respond to.
I do not think the R&P was what made the off topic section interesting. I would actually say it dumbed down the IQ of the Off Topic posts as everyone who thought "off-topic" thought of Sarah Palin or Barack Obama or some type of modern day conspiracy theory.
It's just when you realize 95% of your total posta are in a religion and political thread one starts asking "why am I on mmorpg.com?"
I think for a few like C-B-M it actually was 100%.
I'm relatively certain all of his posts on MMORPG.com were in R&P.
And as far as what happened to the off-topic forum, I dunno, because after R&P branched off from off-topic, I generally didn't post in off-topic since, as said before, I had very little interest in most of the discussions. If there were more sports or movie or TV topics, I might, but I don't see them very often. Granted, this is my first visit to MMORPG in several weeks.
IIRC, he even stated that the only reason he came here was because of the R&P invitation from seabass.
He's not allowed to talk about liberals anymore... so how is he going to get his O'Reilly-factor style of entertainment?
The internet exists for bigots of all backgrounds to complain and argue anonymously, otherwise, it's only good for porn, or (as he said) "just checking on my favorite games and logging out".
I for one hated R&P, but I was there occasionally to rip on obvious idiot statements. A lot of people made it way too easy, seriously. That just doesn't happen often enough in the Pub section.

I've been posting here for years, sometimes I fade in or out for a bit. I was glad when the split off the R and P into its own forum, made things more civilized around here. I actually tried to follow that forum for a bit, and gave up. To me it was mostly people just screaming at each other, engaging in personal attacks, and quoting each other so that every post became 5 pages long. I exagerate a bit, and your mileage may vary. I just don't believe it's possible to have a religion or politics forum on the interent that's actually civil without heavy moderation.
I personally have always posted here because I like the occasional topics that show up about technology and other 'nerd' interests. I'm not always tech or computer saavy so I like to hear other people's opinions and knowledge on the subject. I don't really know what keeps others coming here, or staying away.
