Hi there.

I was just so bored of the fantasy genre, and thought about giving coh a try...

So glad I did it, i know, the game has aged but heck it plays so fresh!

Did play other superhero mmorpg's (Champion Online/ DCUO) but I think this game still stands above the others..

There's still a lot of people online, I played freedom a few days and subscribed :)

Just wanna share this....

I tried it... and I'd just love to know why it limits my fps under 20... and doesn't matter if i place settings ultra max omfg high or ultra low... same fps around 16 or 17.. and something is limiting it,  I can't play it like that... and my pc should be so much more then enough for this oldie...

the same happens to me Wardoxy.

    Weird, ah?

    I mean, i have a gtx 580 3gb, core i7, 6gb rams, etc, etc, etc. And i get a weird fps performance.

But the game IS very much enjoyable... it just needs MORE bgm.

Hmmmzz strange? I got an older rig, with less ram then you have, but on very high settings it runs like a train!

I have a similar issue.  It's a very picky game.  I often have to shut down and reset my router if anyone in the house has been on any website that day.  If I don't reset, the game disconnects me constantly.  It happened the first time I tried it, too, on a free trial.  Other games are no problem, some of them I can play while three of us are online and I'm downloading something besides, but CO for some reason gives my router fits.

CoX is kind of funny - depending on your rig, you can actually get better performance from higher settings than lower settings.

It definitely heats up the CPU more than other games for me.  Other games barely touch the CPU temp and just heat up the GPU.  CoX on the other hand, heats up the CPU and barely touches the GPU.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Welcome to the game and I'm glad you like it!

I really want to like it, but basically all the missions/quests so far either boil down to either killing X amount of people, or going into a base where I have to take out mobs of 2-3 enemies every so often, then fight a boss.

It doesn't help that the game has the slowest combat in a MMORPG I've played, even slower than LOTRO.

It is a good thing to check this thread to know how much it needs to be paid. Without any former subscription time this is way higher than lifetime subscription from CO or DCUO, and still don't get incarnates.

Sounds like you're playing the game solo, even though you can it's not really meant to be played like that. Get yourself into a team of 8 and you'll be having to wade through crap loads of mobs and work together. First time through The Hollows doing missions like Frostfire on full teams and ramping up the difficulty were a blast back in the day.

*sigh* Again, you seem to be missing the point..."needs to be paid" is your opinion.  The game can be played almost entirely without paying anything.  Otherwise, you can purchase a la carte for access or subscribe if you so desire.

I agree. It's a cracking little game, and the VIP sub deal is awesome.

Having a ton of fun in it with friends right now.

Definitely getting annoying with artifacts and other issues because of how it is cooking the CPU while basically ignoring the GPU as other games barely touch the CPU and only moderately chew on the GPU...

I tried this game today and in 12 years of MMO gaming, wherein I have played dozens of MMOs, this ranks as the worst game ever. How the hell they got people to pay for it is a mystery.  No wonder it went F2P.

Getting your quota of cranky old man posts in, are we?  I would invest time in a more thoughtful response inquiring why you feel this way, but after seeing a page of your most recent posts....they can be summed up as "i've been playing mmo's for 12 years" and "get off my lawn".  Might want to look for a new hobby....

It sounds like the game just wasn't for you. Honestly before it went F2P, I considered it my favorite MMORPG of all time, and I don't even like the superhero genre. It was definitely worth paying for, IMO.

I just reinstalled it to try out the f2p options. i had played it for 2 months back in early 2005 so i was curious how it was doing. I didnt quit in 2005 because i thought it sucked but rather for another game i was excited about. I came back and had a little credit to get my toons working and started up again for a couple hrs on a lowbie i had. I actually dont mind the f2p deal they have going at all. I dont feel terribly limited compared to other f2p's. I could see myself getting back into this.

I think what alot of new players have trouble with in this game is that the combat is slow in the early levels as you dont have alot of skills available early on so it seems like very slow ponderous combat in the beggining due to the long reset times on some of the individual skills you have. Having gotten to the higher levels in the past i can safely say that the slow combat is something that dissipates the furthur you get in lvl's. But as you level you become more and more impressive and powerful as you go like you should in an mmo. So it does have a very gradual power curve, but i was only subbed for 2 months and i had hit over lvl 40 back in 2005 on top of 2 alts that were in the teens.

You must still be at a low level or I don't know what, because I think City of Heroes has the fastest combat from an MMORPG I've ever seen. I think you'd have a better case to say it's unbalanced how easily you can one-shot enemies, but that's not any definition of "slow" I'm familiar with.

More proliferation of powersets, an updated graphics engine, and three color choices during costume design - I'd resub.

Well, you'll at least get one of those three things (hint: it's the one that doesn't involve redoing the character database or graphics engine).

Don't get me wrong, I'd be all for a re-do of the graphics engine and more costume color options would be nice (but honestly probably require a hefty revamp of the current costume choices). I just don't think it's likely to happen any time soon (especially now that it's 'FTP'). Heck, I'd love to see more costume piece locations to allow asymetrical costumes, but I know that's not going to happen unless someone comes up with a code miracle.

I get ALMOST the same thing.  HD5770 and I get half the frame rate of, say, LotRO DX11, or the new Deus Ex.

Still like the game, though.  The power enhancement system is still leaps and bounds over CO and DCUO.

Dealing with 2 things would make it a far better game:

-Get rid of the caves.  ALL OF THEM.  Especially the Circle of Thorns ones.  Frustrating and headache inducing.

-Can we PLEASE have a 1 or 2 mob lenience on the "kill all mobs" missions?  So often I find myself having to reset the mission because it claims I haven't wiped them out when I have.  I've run around everywhere trying to induce aggro on that last SOB whereever they are, yet they never come out.  Yes, I know you can complete missions automatically every 4-5 days...

I tried the free client with a friend, we played two villians up to lvl 18. We liked the game alot and since the classes we wanted to play (Mastermind and Controller) were VIP archetypes, we went ahead and subscribed.

She loves that she can Summon Demons and I am doing Plant Control whch allows me to root, confuse, heal, sleep, and damage enemies. We played WoW for 3 years, got burned out, played LOTRO for a few months and liked it, but I couldn't bear the combat, armor/weapon look, and tedious kill/gather quests.

I saw that CoH was free now and downloaded it, installed and started playing. Let me just say that this is funnest combat imo in any MMO. Sure standard missions seem to be repetive, the interesting ones to me are Mayhem Missions and Story Arcs, but the combat has been a blast.

If I was trying to solo as Plant Control, I could see myself getting frustrated as all my damage is in the form of DoTs, so it would be slow, but having a team mate changes everything. I would say if your trying the game out, try to get into a group with someone asap. Even if you dont have the same mission/quest, you can still get exp and bonuses, not only that but higher lvl characters can side kick you, which basically  makes you one level less than the other player, so if hes 50 you will be lvl 49.

As far as the combat goes, it is pretty standard tab target and use skills, but there are AoE knockbacks which send enemies flying, the spell effects are flashy and the animations are fluid, instead of having a cast bar, you have "activation time" which is nice because you can be moving around and hit your skill, your character stops moving, casts the spell and keeps moving, you dont have to stand still while casting as in other MMO's. You can fly and use all your skills, and this isnt on a mount your character actually flies.

I like persistent buff effects, when I cast a buff on a player you always have a visual representation of the buff floating/swiriling around the player, which makes your character look even cooler. I hate games where you cast a buff like "Barkskin" and your characters skin doesnt actually turn into bark visually.

Havent had a chance to PvP, but im sure its going to be fast paced and fun especially with all the movement skills.

I also like that you dont have to worry about upgrading your armor stats, only your skill stats. I designed a costume that I thought was epic looking, I even have a Toxic Vapor anime power up style aura on me.

I look forward to taking on hard content in full size groups and to PvP. I am still looking for a Super Group for me and my gf to join, but every time I ask in /help I get no responses....

If your looking for something you can play casually while waiting for Diablo 3 and GW2, this should tide you over. Its so feature rich and the setting is fresh, find a friend quickly as its 10 times more fun in a group than solo.

Glad you're enjoying it - welcome to the game!  PvP has been kind of shoe-horned into the game and then neglected -- some have hope for it, but we'll see.
