Exactly why I didn't get into FPS games until the more military tactical shooters. I think Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear was my first.

    *Sorry about the music*

Also, I'm a bit surprised about how dated this looks. It's amazing how games above all other types of media seem to age so poorly as we become accustomed to newer technologies. I remember going back and playing Goldeneye many years after release and could barely play it because of how pixelated and blurry it looked. I honestly thought something was wrong with my game or system. I remember sniping enemies across the entire map when it was new but at the time I could barely make out anything more than 15 feet in front of me.

I'm poking fun at how anemic, and boring, TF2 is compared to TF1, not realism.

And I'm no big fan of "military tactical shooters" like America's Army, tactics seem quite limited despite the name.  That's why I moved on from Quake to WWIIONLINE/Planetside, and then tried BF1942 then went back to wwiionline.  There are actual "tactics" being used there, instead of an almost deathmatch gameplay style in "military tactical shooters" in claustrophobic maps.

Last week I played about 20 hours of Diablo2 now.

I just watched a video of Torchlight gameplay on youtube, it kind of reminds me of the beta videos of Diablo 3.

    *yawn*

Could gameplay possibly be any slower.  Get out your hover'around grannie.

Ah man, I loved Rogue Spear.  The MP was great fun.  But the first FPS that I poured alot of time in was 1998's Rainbow Six game, the first of the franchise.  Rogue Spear was great in every way over R6.  Too bad R63 didn't do as well as its predecessors.  That failure paved the way for Lockdown, the death of classic R6 gaming.

"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." Much like OP, my first shooters were Doom and Quake. Lots of time spent on those... then Quake 3 and Unreal. But that first R6 was also my first tactical shooter, and I played the daylights out of it. The preplanning setup is the thing I miss the absolute most, and I really wish some game out there would do something like that again.

Didn't do much Rogue Spear or Raven's Shield, though. After R6 I moved on to Ghost Recon, where I joined a clan and ran through a number (tons) of coop campaigns and 300 missions for like, 3 years, including all the standard campaigns.

That was a total blast (and of course, I kept up with the UTs and BFs as they came out).

Today's non milsim shooters feel slow to me, and for some reason, milsims bore me nowadays. How times and people change I guess, eh?

I love you for reminding me the good time of the old good Quake.

It's sad that today we have such high standard and people ignore the good old classic.

I remember the first time I saw 3 people playing Quake and it blew my mind. From then on I was hookedon the idea of multiplayer team games. I did and still do *love* the idea of having a place in a team, speciallizing in something and being depended on to do it well. Everquest came along and build on that idea, you could be a healer and make a reputation as a good healer. I don't feel that in games anymore which is a damn shame. In short, I miss my grappling hook. =
