Funcom really needed a new engine before they starting this MMO. Using the same old engine they've used hte last decade not pushing their games forward. The next gen engines are out there now and Funcom one showing its age.

I think "I Want To Believe" is a tshirt we all wear as MMO players. But I doubt Funcom can pull this off. Maybe after a year of patching and content updates, it is such a mammoth project I just don't see it launching that well. The SW Phase 2, they got it wrong and that points to how the game will go.

I think they could have pulled this of five years ago, but now if you do not launch perfectly you die, that is the environment new MMO's are in.

If they would make this game F2P it would be massive in terms of playerbase.  They could just make the game $59.95 and call it a day, none of that $15 a month BS anymore.  I don't mind store items, just as long as they don't over do it with elite gear that messes up end game PVP and such.

You do have a point there.  Listen to, then!

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

    I'm sorry but NO!

I'd rather pay for a great game over getting a sub-par game for free any day.

Sure I agree with you partially but I'm not happy about greedy devs....p2p+ cashshop=robbery

make up your damn minds, either f2p+cashshop or p2p no cashshop. Iif I'm paying monthly for a game why should I suffer the cash shop dilemma as well.

Wake up gamer's if you let them get away with it just cause it's a good game it will become the standard. or take a hint from A.net and go b2p+cashshop. DONT BE F**iNG GREEDY.

I really don't have a problem with a vanity item cash shop in my subscription game. Now if I have to pay for content unlocks like quest lines, zones or instances through the cash shop thats a different story and I'll walk away from the game. But as i understand it right now their idea for the shop is purely vanity items and they are welcome to that.

People ranting about it on principal, or it being greedy need to grow up. Its not just entertainmnet, it's a business. At least they have the good sense to plan out a payment model well in advance of launch instead of tacking on a cash shop a few months after launch.

If TSW is a terrbile game it won't matter one bit what pricing model they use the game will fail. If it's a fantastic game and a success, they have every right to use whatever payment model is going to garner them the most revenue from the game. Revenue they can then use to hire more people, develop new games and grow their company.

SIGH!!! I am going to buy SWTOR, GW2 and TSW. Playing will tell me how that goes. Everything else is just passing the time till they come out and launch. I am looking forward to all 3.

He said word STORY 21 times. I guess SWTOR is already influencing other game devs with their focus on SOTYR pillar :).

What do you know about there gameengine then?

I know that they have worked hard on improving the gameengine. And are currently using the uppgraded gameengine on AoC. There are stil improvment being done and they are to be used by AoC in q1(before TSW launch).  TSW have five times larger playfields than the biggest once in AoC. The playfields in the AoC expantions is about 3times the size of the largest once at launch of AoC. Sow the playfields will be 15 times larger than the original AoC game. The game will not be heavy instanced. The game will require ok HW(about same as AoC) as it has the most stunning MMORPG grahics today.

I just think this is going to be a mess in terms of story telling. It's just going to be a weird clash and mish-mash of occult nonsense and other absurdist stuff about crop circles, ouiga boards, and flying saucer mumbo-jumbo. I advise skip.

This site has a code of conduct that prohibits me from saying insulting or derogatory things to people with whom I disagree, so in place of calling people out I will say this:

If you truly believe that top-quality MMO's can begin their lives on a F2P model and continue to be successful, I want you to do something for me: take into consideration how many players F2P games like LotRO and DDO have (and how much hardware/tech people are required to support that number), the absolutely abysmal and embarassing graphics of those games, and compare it to a game like The Old Republic or The Secret World.  The divide is ENORMOUS.  We're talking, like, stretch the Laurentian Abyss out horizontally (while maintaining its verticality) and now you've got an idea of what you should be envisioning here.

F2P is for games that have a relatively low-cost development cycle that allows the publisher the time required for a F2P model to recoup the expenses of developing the game, which is why League of Legends (and similar games) look like they were made on a F##KING Etch-a-Sketch compared to real, high-quality games produced by extremely talented people.  F2P is also great for games that failed to perform as subcription-based titles and are then appropriately scaled down in terms of hardware support and designer support.  LotRO and DDO had been out for plenty long before their handlers threw in the towel.

I have no idea where people get this sense of entitlement, or that game developers shouldn't try to make money by offering -=VANITY=- items in the cash shop!!!  It makes me want to tear my damn hair out when I see these whiny little peons crying about not being able to get a triple-A title for free, or that there's going to be some iteration on the cash shop model!  PEOPLE HAVE BEEN BUYING AND SELLING ITEMS FOR REAL CASH IN MMO'S FOR OVER TEN YEARS.  Why is it okay when you're buying a King's Sword of Bitchin' Kick-assery from a Chinese guy who craps in a bucket next to his computer, but it isn't okay to buy a Super-special Extra-cute Pet Chihuahua from the company that designed the damn game?!?

EVERYTHING costs money, guys.  This money must be made back within a reasonable span of time.  TSW has been in development for, what...seven years?  And now that EA has their filthy hands on the project you can bet dollars to doughnuts that they are applying immense pressure on Funcom to get this product out and make it as profitable as possible as quickly as possible.  This is the way the world works; with very few exceptions (CD Project Red of The Witcher and The Witcher II fame probably being most notable), the days of the game industry being strictly "for us, by us" are long, long gone.  It's about getting your money now.  And if you're comfortable with playing a glorified iPhone game because it's free, they don't want your money -- because there are forty million more who want a good damn game.

    ***

And just to show that my crazy, Internet nerd-rage isn't totally blinding me with its white-hot fury I will point out the potentially glaring fallacy in my argument: Guild Wars 2.  ArenaNet is asserting that it will be absent monthly fees (though they haven't mentioned anything substantive regarding an in-game cash shop), and the game looks absolutely phenomenal.  Either they've got a really carefully-modeled business plan going on or they've sold their souls to some cosmic entity -- I haven't decided yet.  ;-)

I wonder if it will all lead to beings like 'The Great Old Ones' or Cthulu. This would be predictable but still worth doing - excellent and cool!

Im willing to bet that you will most likely see something along those lines :). And yes that would be the pinnacle of epicness (is that even a word? It should be.)

    All war is deception.

When they think we are in front of them, we are behind them.

When they think we are weak, we are strong.

When they think we are few, we are legion.

For there ever to be true balance, there must first be chaos.

And chaos is ours to orchestrate.

One word can equal the might of a thousand swords.

And one sword can obliterate a thousand lives.

Everyone and everything has a purpose and a path, if only as a ruse or a diversion.

Everything can be manipulated into usefulness by those who truly understand the very nature of things.

    We understand.

We create chaos in order to achieve balance.

The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.

We are Dragon, and we have both.
