The Secret World: Developer Diary: Storytelling in The Secret World

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

MMORPG.com has partnered with Funcom to bring our readers and exclusive look at the art of storytelling in The Secret World. Penned by Funcom's Senior Producer & Creative Director Ragnar Tørnquist, the article discusses how the team is making the story is the "heart and soul" of The Secret World. Read our exclusive developer diary and then leave us your thoughts in the comments.

Story is the heart and soul of The Secret World. Inspired by myths, urban legends, fairy tales and real history, the story provides context to everything the player does in the game: from missions to dungeons, from player vs. player combat to monster encounters. Everything is influenced by our story, and everything plays a part in communicating the story to the player.

    I'm sorry but NO!

I'd rather pay for a great game over getting a sub-par game for free any day.

Nervious about this one, could work, or could go horribly wrong, i suspect due to lack of content, bad questing mechanics, boring combat, etc. Still, I have hope.

This will be the one game I actually intend to read the quest text in.

The biggest storytelling about TSW will happen before it's getting released.

If there werent alot of great F2P games out now I might agree. But there are, so I have moved beyond the old stereotype that F2P = fail.

Isnt this like the 20th diary they've had on storytelling?

Looking at the upcoming MMOs this one is the one I am most interested in. If this is done right it should offer a great balance between PvP with meaning and PVE. The potential here is way ahead of anything else on the horizion including Star Wars. I am really looking forward to this game.

Then you should be agreeing with him/her. The only two decent F2P games out there are DDO and LotRO, both of which started out as P2P ventures.

Sounds good, but I remember how exited I was for Tabula Rasa for years because it was going to bring good storytelling to MMO's and all that stuff. It turned out to be pretty avarage. I hope Funcom are inspired more by their Longest Journey games than Age of Conan when it comes to story.

Same here, but mostly because there won't be a wall of text to read. If I want that much text to read, I'll read my books.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

As Ragnar Tørnquist is Senior Producer & Creative Director, and was this on TLJ and dreamfall I belive there will be a lot if inspiration from his previous hit games.

I was looking forward to that Secret War prelude to beta thing.  Whatever happened to that?

  • Ngeldu5tNgeldu5t Member UncommonPosts: 608

This game sounds better and better but it's Funcom and I don't trust them because they always fucked up and pissed their player base down the road.So I'll wait like 2-3 months after launch and see how things are progressing before I buy their game.

It's a pity Funcom is so greedy. Otherwise I might not have lost all interest in this game.

I think the posts feigning three year old raw butthurt from AoC are pretty funny. I'm looking forward to the TSW rage quit posts. "Can't complete these quests!!!...I'm trying to think, but nothings happening!!!"

I'm looking forward to playing TSW. Even if it's as buggy as AoC at launch, it'll be more fun/interesting than anythiing else on the horison.........for me.

Which great F2P games? I guess you mean dying or failed P2P games like CO, STO, Lotro, DDO, AoC... P2W model only extends their miserabe life.

Umm, show me where LOTRO is dying, or DDO?  Being many years old an not having the same subscription base that will support a P2P model, yet being VERY profitable with a F2P model is not dying...especially when alot of the people that do play LOTRO STILL end up just paying the same 15 bucks a month to subscribe after they realize they like the game.

P2W only works for games where there is an extensive item shop, but games like LOTRO and DDO, you instead pay mostly for content past the initial few levels, and you can unlock the entire game with a monthly subscription just like any other P2P MMO. Personally I thikn the LOTRO method works great for people who only play a little and can spend the 5 bucks on a new zone a month and it takes them that long to level through it.

Not to mention you can unlock alot of the game just by playing for free, as you get a lot of Turbine points for doing stuff in game.
