I haven't played Civilization 2 for like 14 years, but I use to play it allot. I bought Civilization 3 when it first came out, I barely played it, put it back on the shelf. Why? It is sort of the same game, heck Civ3 even has better graphics. So why do I hate Civ3 but like an older game Civ2 better?
I dunno. But when I went to youtube to look up Civ2 for the hell of it, I ran into the soundtrack of the game and was hit by a huge wall of nostalgia. Example:

lol, someone playing 2 accoustic guitar to Diablo2's Tristram soundtrack.
I absolutely LOVED Civ2. As for the music and videos, it's been a Civ staple that after completing a Wonder, you were in for a good little video. My faves from it?
Leonardo's Workshop
I also had a soft spot for the crazy advisors: ANARCHY!
Civ3? I don't have much memory of it, even though I did own it. Civ4? I thought it was the best in the series so far, to include even Civ5. Something about how it all went together for Civ4.

We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." Really? Civ4 was good? Never tried it.
Civ4 soundtrack is nothing but classical music, which like everything else should be in moderation. This version of Bach Brandenburg Concerto #3, 2 and 4 is better:

From Hearts of Iron 2 soundtrack, the best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXXPrhKQouc&feature=related
another good ones from HOI 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQJrotmk2o4&feature=related
Now this game almost entirely was carried by the soundtrack, in many ways HOI 1 was better then HOI 2, but the music of HOI2 made it worth the money.
Without the soundtrack, "the mood", a game is only half a game.
NOSTALGIA NOSTALGIA, thankfully video games don't come with smell.

Better than TF2
I remember the first CTF map: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h419_nABVRM&feature=related (1:45 I believe is where the first CTF map is, red and blue walls).
Then I moved onto TF
Then MegaTF
Then CustomTF
Deathmatch---->CTF----->TF----->MegaTF---->CustomTF
Quake2 came out with something that resembled the original CTF map, which is one step up from deathmatch. Better graphics but game mechanics wise it was a step backwards. Never played it. I'm not going to go backwards from Custom TF to vanilla CTF.
Quake3 same thing. Never played it.
TF2, booooring. CustomTF was more fun, had cooler weapons, you can customize your class, heck even moving around was faster in CustomTF compared to geriatrics TF2.
It's like what's happening with MMORPG's. Graphics are improved, but gameplay actually gets worse, dumbed down, or just more boring. Amazing isn't it.
GAMES OF ALL GENRES ARE GETTING WORSE WITH TIME!!!!
unfortunately, i doubt D3 will capture the kind of magic D2 invoked. they are too $ focused and not enough game focused company now.
From back in 2000, with Creative Assembly's first "Total War" title, we get Shogun Total War. And the awesomeness of the song for winning a battle
Also, the a part of the intro theme from a JRPG in the mid 1990s. It was "Lunar 2: Eternal Blue" and I had it on the SegaCD. I love the intro song and the style of showing the "wall" for a bit of the history.

Some "win" music MTW2:

I wonder if game developers are aware of the importance of audio, sometimes over visual.
