Ok, teach me how to be a bow user...

SovrathSovrath Member LegendaryPosts: 32,002

So I love the sound and look of bows in Vanguard. However, it seems, at least a the paltry lower levels, that once I fire one arrow the enemy closes and I'm essentially meleeing.

I've tried to kite but that doesn't seem to work well. Though truth be told, I'm more used to point and click kiting.

What am I missing or are bow users indeed just cloth melee?

The only true bow user is the Ranger, and that is only if you do the quest to become an Archer based Ranger (You can go melee if you want, but I don't suggest it.) I think the quest starts around level 10 or 15, around the same time when you do the Pet quest.

Bard can also do the whole Bow thing as well, but the damage they do is minimal compared to the Ranger.

If you are a Ranger and you are Archer based, use "Warden Shot", not just the normal Ranged Shot. If you use Warden Shot, the criticals will open up your chain attacks. I have a 50 Ranger and I dominate things. Once you get your Movement speed buff and your multishot, you can kite groups of mobs at a time. I was killing 8 3dot-4dot mobs at a time every chance I got. In fact, if you do it right, you can solo kill almost anything in the game if you have enough room to run and assuming they don't heal.

Edit: I just thought that maybe you were too low yet to really see them as a Bow class. Rangers in the starting levels and the low teens are not much for Ranged attacks. If you really focus at it, Rangers start to take off in the low 20s. They are one of my favorite classes.

Ranged Shot criticals open up my chain attacks too.. : As far as the rest of the information, I agree

Interesting. Ranged Shot used to not open chain attacks, although this was practically since launch and I have used Warden Shot ever since. It may have changed since then, so you may be correct.

Well, thanks all, that helps a lot.

Do you recall where I get this ranged ranger quest? I don't generally use pets so I wasn't even aware that (or conveniently ignored) the pet quest.

To be honest, I forget where it starts. I think it depends on what race you are. My ranger is a Halfing and I remember doing a lot of stuff in/near the Wood Elf area for those quests. It's been a few years though.

    Can I suggest google ?

    There you go.

Edit: I've been looking around and honestly, I don't see any information about the quests. It is possible they gave Rangers both melee and ranged specializations. It's been forever, so I don't really remember. The idea is that you will use the "Style of Precision" (a combat stance) when using ranged attacks, etc. I don't really know what what else to tell you. You don't get to be a real "ranged" attacker until the high teens or low 20s, because you will lack the required abilities to really benefit from it; like movement buff, chain attacks that snare mobs, etc.

Thaks again, your googlefu is better than mine, I was still looking. I think you answered my questions very well regarding why I wasn't really "feeling" the whole ranged part. thanks again.

    Many things have changed.

For example, my Shaman can now be in totem form AND have a summon out.
