One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

    1)  Combat against the PvE mobs in the newbie starter city is nothing like the PvP combat

    2)  You'll be able to experience solo or small group PvP as early as level 10 (which only takes about an hour to reach) upon leaving the city, territorial control PvP about 20.  That being said, you're not going to be able to compete one-on-one with sommebody who's  got better skill ranks thank you, so start ranking up skills as soon as you can.  Pick one and rank it to at least 5, preferably 10 and then another from there

    3)  Skill effectiveness is based on a number of factors, including primary stat (INT for mages, WIS for healers, STR for warriors), weapon DPS (even for mages - it's factored into mage skill damage) and skill rank..  At a low level, you'll get the most bang for the buck out of equipping the highest DPS 2h weapon you can.

    4)  Group up!  You get an exp boost for grouping, it's critical for named mobs and it's more fun!

    5)  Have fun!

FYI - it takes 90 hours to rank a single skill to 10. That seems like a lot, but you could have 5 skills at max rank just playing casually, assuming you login to just queue up every day, in 3 weeks time.  If you were to do so, I'd recommend the following breakdown, at minimum:

Class Armor skill (light, medium, heavy) - Rank 10

Primary weapon type - Rank 10

If you chose dual wielding or 1h specialization - Rank 10

    2 high circle damage/healing skills, 3 if you chose a 2h weaopn

Also, you could have an alt you're not really playing leveling up the same number of skills in that time period, which makes you incredibly powerful for the level, even if you're just leveling up low circle skills

A new player can definitely be both high level (easily) and competitive in a short amount of time.  A casual player who logs in every day to queu,e, but doesn't play very often will be very competitive for his or her level.

    Regarding the token shop:

This is not a pay-to-win game.  You can buy gear, but it's not any better than what you can find in game.  In fact, the best gear is in game.  You can accelerate training or buy respecs that don't have penalties and this will make you competitive sooner if you're the type of player who needs to reach end level PVP in a week.  If that's not you, then don't worry about it.  You'll be competitive soon enough, as indicated above.  No, you won't have every single skill in your book at rank 10, but you'll have enough to be able to be effective in combat with enemies.

No doubt the game launched before it was ready.  That being said, it's better than it's ever been, both in performance and features, and I'm having a blast PvPing.  I recognize it has faults, but I'm still having fun and that's all that really counts.
