Considering Rift.... Is it for me or a waste of money? (PvPer)

I've been watching some videos, reading reviews, etc and it looks like fun. However, I'm being rather cautious because 1) I'm a poor college student 2) I've tried a couple other MMOs that have come out in the past few years, which have bored me after 1-2 months (like Warhammer Online), despite receiving solid reviews. The only MMO I've ever stuck with is World of Warcraft, which I have finally quit after 6 years. From what I've seen, I have two concerns so far which are:

1) Lackluster questing: Will I become so bored I quit before I even get to the fun stuff?

2) PvP: Unbalanced/uncompetitive? PvP is my main interest, and is what kept me playing WoW so long, having a large pool of competitive players and competing with other top tier players in the arenas. I've heard that with so many class customization options balance is out of control from a PvP perspective and I haven't heard anything about an arena system in the game.

Thanks for your input.

If u want to  pvp dont even play it i mean its good to have 9 sub classes on each calling but that leads to unbalance.

Why don't you look for yourself if you like it?!

You'll need to reach level 10 to have access to the first warfront (press K for menu).

You'll normally pass to the first open PvP area of the world at roughly level 20. Just remember that if you're having trouble with high levels camping the entrances, you can pass into a territory from any point as long as you can climb it.

I won't be able to try it out this weekend because I won't have my new computer which will actually be able to run a game like Rift for another week :(

Random question, are there mounts/flying mounts in Rift?

Mounts yes, of 3 speed variety and of various shapes. Some are also side dependant.

Flying mounts no. The game has potential to implement good world PvP. The lack of flying mounts is a further testament to that potential. It's not yet utilised though. So far the only massive world PvP I've seen in end level is when the final invasion boss spawns and both sides rally to kill it and kill each other in the process.

After 6 years of playing WOW I am sure you are burned out on this type of mmo. I also have played WOW since beta and was burned out on it and decided to try RIft.  IT was fun for the first 3 weeks then I realized its the same game accept with better visuals and constant RIfts poping up every where. I hated the Rifts after about the 5th day. In my opinon they get in the way of questing.  The game is great if you never played wow or have only played wow for a short period of time. Since you and I have played WOW so long you will become bored with it for quickly. DO NOT BUY IT IF YOU ARE POOR... YOU WILL WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Now that my idiotic real life friends left the game to go back to that "other" game and had me roll on an idiotic dry PvE server so now I can role on an actual decent server (Harrow) PVP-RP, I will let you know how the PvP is soon enough! Whew , that was a mouthful.

People have been constantly comparing this game to WoW but for me I can't even see how you can even compare RIFT with WoW. Sure the interface looks like WoW but that's as far as it goes. Well up to now anyways..... They added a cross server Warfront finder but I really hope to god they don't add a cross server dungeon finder as well. If they keep going in the direction they are headed then YES it will be comparable to WoW. Thanks to all the bitching and moaning about it from players and Trion translating all this to perhaps that's really what the players want, a true WoW clone. No Thanks. But up to this point it really has been no comparison. The game does not play anything like WoW in my opinion. As far as PvP goes i think a lot of people are judging it based on Warfronts on PvE servers and not actual PvP servers.

Don't get me wrong, WoW was an awesome game back in the early days when people actually had an amazing world to explore instead of the lifless one they have now what with everyone simply standing around the auction houses, queued up for the next dungeon. That is not an MMO. That is merely a lobby game at best. Hell they could do away with the actual explorable world and half the 10 million or so subscribers wouldn't even know or care.

I think an actual PvP server should have some great potential here for some really good gameplay if Trion doesn't give in to all the whining from stupid WoWtards that wouldn't know a decent MMO if it fell out of the sky and landed on thier head!

So far RIFT has been the best new MMO experience I have had in a very long time! And should only get better what with so much potential. TRION really needs to be very careful how they allow thier game to develop now that it is past the first month!

while i am not a big fan of wow dungeon finder because it all very impersonal i have to admit rift needs it.

finding a group is getting harder and harder and on some of the barren servers almost impossible .the lower you go in level the worse it  is.

Also the WF are drying up pretty quickly too.The creation of the super pyro mage has made a bad problem  now a terrible problem.

Here's the thing. Now that the world event is closing to its second phase, I find myself running some dailies on it, closing rifts and generally participating more in the open world. As in a few days/weeks ago I was spending the majority of time inside warfronts. It is possible that other people are doing something similar and spend more time in the open world than inside those PvP instances. Also the first month is over, so the loss of a percentage of the total game population has probably contributed somewhat to the increase in queue times.

It's still not bad. From instant queues, I have to wait 2-3 minutes now. Hardly a big deal. I'm defiant btw on a PvP server.

Warfronts are like WoW BGs, yes. There are four of them, Black Garden, The Codex, Whitefall Steppes and Battle for Port Scion.

In Black Garden, there is one "flag" in the middle of the zone, and the team who holds it scores points as long as they hold on to it. The closer to the middle the flag carrier is located, the more score per tick they get, also, the flag carrier gets a DoT while holding the fang, dealing increasing amounts of damage per tick that will eventually one-shot the carrier. The flag cannot be dropped.

The Codex is like AB, but with four control points, and the point named "The Codex" scores more points than any other control point.

Whitefall Steppes is your everyday capture the flag.

Battle for Port Scion is your "war" map, kind of like AV. You can win by score or by killing the enemy commander. There are things like mini-quests and a raid boss within this warfront that helps your team if you do them. I cba to explain the whole thing, but this warfront is definitly the most fun one, for me.

    This is just my opinion.

Save your money if your lookig for a good PvP game. I have unsubbed to Rift due to the PvP being subpar to say the least.

    Here is why.

Warfront AFKers, yep the same crap that was in WoW is back and as problomatic as ever. 4-5 people out of 10-15 are afk botting. Which means auto lose for you if they on your team.

Only 4 WF. grinding them over and over again gets old, fast.

Little or NO open world PvP, and no reason to at this point. Guardians outnumber defiant 2 to 1 or more ( at least on my server) so that means even for world events guardians own just due to sheer numbers.

Population imbalances- at least on my cluster defiant almost always lose but have instant Q pops, Guardian almost always win but have 30-40 minute wait times for a single WF to pop.

lackluster PvP gear. Even at prestige rank 6 your shiney purple PvP gear will be outshined by the casual PvE guy, no pvp ranking system of any sort. Basically you will be just grinding WF for sub par gear, constantly losing as defiant or at a snails pace as guardian due to long Q times.

Class imbalances- Nuff said ( but it is an MMO and pvp is rarely balanced)

Thats just what I can think of off the top of my head. IMO Rift is a great PvE game and if played as such will be enjoyed. PvPers look elsewhere. this is another PvE game with a dash of PvP which will likely be ignored mostly. Every 4th or 5th update expect a small bone for the PvP crowd just so they can say they did so.

Once again this is my opinion, and worth exactly what you paid for it =)

Why don't you name a MMO that has perfectly balanced pvp, realm balance, good pvp gear (your own argument contradicts itself if pvp gear was ubber which ever side that has better gear would win so much for balance) etc. Even DAoC had plenty of those issues. If you want  a *perfect* pvp game you should not be playing MMOs.

What server do you play on cause on endless I have yet to see a single Guardian win. Defiants ALWAYS seem to be more organized, stay together while Guardians always run off like a flock of chickens and pay no attention whatsoever to chat or even respond to instructtions. I am talking like a final point score of like 14 points Guardians/500 defiant. Has playing Warcraft made people so lazy to the point of not setting up thier chat boxes properly or tweaking thier interfaces. If people would stop playing RIFT like they play Warcraft perhaps they would actually realize RIFT is actually nothing like WoW.

I play on a PvP-RP server now with the quest tracker turned off and have been setting up macros to further enhance my RP style of play and have been engaging in tradeskills, harvesting, rifting, collectables, chatting, making new friends on a regular basis and constantly tweaking my user interface as i lvl up , playing the auction house/economy game, Warfronts, questing (and actualy reading every NPC dialog), getting my fellow guildmates involved in the many social interactions and  gameplay elements mentioned above running dungeons and warfronts as a guild group. and I am only lvl 35ish and with still several new gameplay elements yet to unlock. Seems to me I have barely scratched the surface. I have not had this much freedom and fun in a new MMO in a very long time. What the hell have people been doing lately other than bitching and totally missing out on an amazing gameplay experience if only you would break the WoW mindset

You might want to wait awhile.  The developers are running wild with goofy changes and patches.  The game needs to stabilize before I'm willing to invest any more time.

What you said about WoW where everyone stands around the auction house waiting for the next instance is exactly the same as rift on a pvp server. I played to 50 prestige rank3 and yeah not a lot of open world pvp. There is no reason to open world pvp really, the warfronts give more prestige. If i solo kill someone i get 100 prestige, but if i do a warfront, i get 20 prestige per kill, and 600 for winning. Even if you dont win, the rate you will gain prestige is far higher than in the open world.

Most of the people who play Rift seem to enjoy chasing carrots, and carrot chasers wont open world pvp if they get better rewards for doing warfronts. They are in it for shinies, i like that term, and not much else.

    @OP

    1. Quests are mostly meh, but due to invasions and rifts popping often they don't get You bored all that much. And since those and BG gives xp You should be fine.

    2. PvP is weak for someone who would treat it as main activity. Souls due to all combinations offers high degree of customization and thus fun, as long as You can read and are willing to experiment. BGs are called WarFronts and are okay but You'll get bored as there are only 4 of them. World PvP is a tad meh, but due to no flying mounts or dungeon finder it has potential. Have to see what Trion will do about world PvP in next bigger update.

My advice - don't buy now, but keep eye on Rift and check where world PvP will go. I think Trion idea is to mix some world public groups PvE/PvP(rifts, invasions) and instanced PvE/PvP(dungeons and raids and WF). So if You like only one element it won't deliver.

As much as I like this game, I'll be honest with you.  PvP sucks until endgame.  Once you get to level 50 and get in a decent guild, you'll start doing pre-made vs pre-made.  PUG pvp is stupid, of course it's been that way in every game.  As for questing, it's just like WoW and just about any other game with alot of quests.  I've heard also that endgame PvP will include raiding capital cities and such for Favor/Favor quests (Favor=PvP currency), but that has yet to be implemented.  I find it fun though on PvP servers how players aren't OP just because of thier level.  A couple of level 30-35s (if they're the right classes) can take down a level 50 pretty easy.  There is no penalty in PvP for being lower level other than stats/gear.  None of that stupid "I can't even hit you because you're 20 levels higher than me" you find in WoW.

First of all, this game's grind is so short that you will not be bothered by quest content. In general, faux-reviewers keep bringing up how boring the grind is despite it lasting a week. The fact is, even if it is boring, you're not mired in it forever to hit 50. Seriously, two weeks at most.

Unbalanced, unorganized but competetive PvP seems to best describe Rift's PvP state. You do play roulette with your 3 server pools when queuing up for stuff, and team composition generally wins or loses you a match. That being said, the pool is generally pretty full and tears flow like a fountain if that's your thing. Those pools, however, never seem to be divided, so in a way, you're probably not going to be playing in 'fair' scenarios. There doesn't appear to be any sorting based off tiers.

The thing is that while the meta is bonkers, you do have a lot of flexibility overall to follow the meta if necessary. Short leveling grind and swappable roles helps mitigate the overall problems with balance at the moment. If you're truly competetive, you'll play whatever the meta demands, and rift does very little to stop you from playing all 4 classes and maintaining them fairly easily.

Still, I don't think PvP in Rift is structured enough to be satisfying for OP. It's geared towards embracing the community as a whole, and the community generally bitches.

    1) Yes, the quest's are boring and repetitive as hell, but you level quick so it's not too big of an issue.

    2) Don't do it! PVP is royally unbalanced. There's cleric's walking around like gods, and pyro's one shotting everyone else, it's terrible. There are no ranked matches either, so the warfront's (instanced PVP matches) are just a PVP gear grind.

Save your money, especially if you enjoy PVP.
