Horror.I'd love to see a H.P Lovecraft based MMORPG ,doesn't have to be based on Call of Cthulu  or something from the genre not based on Vampires and Werewolves which is getting a little blaise.

Dang, I knew I was missing one...I had a terrible migraine all last night.   Went into work anyway, and still cannot concentrate very well - brain is on fire  image .   Sorry for not having it on the poll.  Wish I knew how to edit my poll,  :(

    Porn

Sorry, I couldn´t resist. After Red Dead Redemption I could imagine a Western MMO.

I wish someone would buy the rights to Warhammer from Mythic and make Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying 2nd Edition game using the the career skill system.  I think if someone make the world the way it should have been made it would be a hit.  Unlike the mess that Mythic turned out.

Horror or Survival Horror.  Resident Evil or Silent Hill done right would be a blast.

I know you just put it on there for the sake of variety but I can't imagine had awful a sports MMO would be, much less an MMORPG. Yes, I have played Need for Speed World. They are better off being left as SP/MP games..they are hard to sell as it is.

I want to see more of what hasn't been seen much or at all. I've seen so many fantasy MMORPGs that I simply can not get immersed in them nor do I care about reading their rehashed lore.

Historical. There are a lot of periods that would make excellent MMOs ((Western is kinda historical too, more or less at least).

No magic, no healing, no elves.

England 1066, Germany during the 30 year war, the American independance war, France in the 17th century (3 Musketeers online?), Scandinavia 10th century... And so many more that would make great settings including a half historical CIV type of MMO.

None of the other choices is even close in possibilities. And fantasy MMOs have been done to death.

Horror have potential as well, I would love a Lovecraft based game set in the 30s.

    One such game does exist.
    http://www.cthulhureturns.com/
Cthulhu Returns. It's a top down 2.5D game, but it is billed as an mmorpg. I'd like to see it rewritten using the Unreal Engine or something.

So, Cthulhu Mythos and Wild West for sure.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

What makes horror games great is the feeling of being alone and helpless. In a MMO realm it just won't feel the same, if it does then its not much of an MMO.

You can't. Herodes already voted "porn" so you have to subtract one. ;)

Never let facts get in the way of a good story.

You are right, horror works better as a CORPG game. A lovecraft based game where youre troubleshooters investigate cases (4-6 players) could get scary and just get the right mood.

A really massive game just wouldn't get the same feeling.

    A fusion.

Although it would likely have a primary genre going for it, it would actually be a fusion of several elements to provide a more open world than commonly found in those that focus on one and perhaps dabble in others as mere fluff.

WoW offers a form of high fantasy and beginning steampunk.  Pre-Apocalyptic events attempt to drive the story at various times, as Azeroth is always facing destruction from some Tom, Dick, and Harry.  It touches upon quite a few genres, but generally does so as mere fluff that never really gives that overall feeling that any of it matters.  You may or may not be surprised to find how many different genres are creeping around in the game.

So imagine something like WoW - slowing it down, taking it off rails, opening up certain areas, and breathing some life into those other genres instead of just showing a slideshow with some muzak playing in the background.  Aim high instead of going for that lowest common denominator in a money grab.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

There's 3 upcoming that could be rated under horror/dark fantasy, namely World of Darkness, The Secret World and Undead Labs' zombie MMO.

My favorite setting too, there's already a huge number of fantasy and scifi MMO's.

Although steampunk MMO sounds like fun too.

I have to go with a scifi mixed with fantasy.  Simply because I'd still love to see a Star Ocean MMO that was a themepark/sandbox hybrid. Colonizing new worlds for sandbox, and visiting established planets for themepark.

It is funny with the zombie horror that people think it would not work as a MMORPG... step outside of the box.  You are not the human trying to survive...you are the zombie trying to survive.  The players are zombies that retain some of their previous intellect - they are stuck between the mindless zombies and the remaining humans.  They have a world infrastructure collapsing around them, and in order for them to survive - they need to stop it from collapsing.  In doing so, they face threats from many angles...and survival becomes a challenge.

I actually saw a sports MMORPG design on a website not long ago that I thought would actually be intersting.   Players would create a football(think soccer as well) team.   Then have games against one another, think Madden Football or FIFA Soccer, and once every three months the top teams would compete in play-offs and the top two teams play in a Superbowl or World Cup.    Players would create their own franchise, team names, logos, have to make trades, recruit, advertise, raise money, deal with injuries, scandals, the works.  It would be based on a world size system, so you might have a team from Sydney, competing from with a team from Berlin and such.   I think this would be kinda awesome.

An issue with historical, would be that potential need to create a "What-If?" scenario so that it was outside of the witnessed historical timeframe.  Otherwise, you know what happens.  Then to an extent, it becomes a themed 3D chatroom.  Then again, many of the games feel that way, do they not?  Costumed 3D chatrooms in themeparks.  So perhaps, they would fit right in.

Regardless of the genre, if it is a story where you are a passenger - you are still a passenger.

    Really? Anything but fantasy.

    I voted cyberpunk.

    Always read the small print.

heh whislt a Historical based MMO could be a lot of fun I have this scenario running through my head.

Just after character creation you get this message "I'm sorry your character died of Cholera as a baby please create a new character"

True, true...but I think if done correctly, a game set in say medieval times could work.    It doesn't have to be set in our medieval times though, it just needs to be themed as such.   No magic, no dragons, no eleves, fairies...just a medieval sim.   You know, castles, fiefs, peasants, knights, ladies, lords, barrons, that sorta stuff.   Think EVE, but in a medieval setting.
