Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning: January Producer's Letter

Warhammer Dev Team member James Casey brings us January's Producer Letter. In it, James talks about the plans they have for Warhammer in 2011, what we can look forward to in the numbered patches and server population. Check it out and let us know what you think in the forums.

This month’s Producer Letter is being brought to you by James Casey. James has been a Producer on the project for some time and has run a number of WAR initiatives (New User Journey, Endless Trial, Verminous Horde, etc.) in tandem with Carrie. Carrie is still working on WAR, but is looking at a different aspect of the game. This new focus will be revealed in due time.

Check out the full letter here.

If this letter is supposed to enthusiasm players then I guess after RIFT launch, sadly  WAR won't need anymore it's survival kit but a defibrillator.

    now is free2play??

I suspect when RiFT launches it will pretty much be the end of WAR unfortunately.

Warhammer Online and Rift doesn't even cater to the same playerbase. If anything, Warhammer will have a comeback by going F2P (which I hope it will).

I personally thought the game rocked (started a few months ago).....that is until you get passed the n00b area and then the game is literally a ghost town. Now I rarely login. F2P is the only thing that can save this game now.

Just got my free 10 days,WAR is not dead, norn & azgal are still live in all tiers.

    f2p...f2p....f2p....

maintaining server and patching it isnt free >_<

Runescape is free and there's lots of f2p game for all the damn f2p noobs that like them.

WAR was a great game till the population make it boring, devs didnt help, but the damn population just took their damn free stuff and avoid fighting.

So, if you think f2p gonna save this game, you're probably one of those stupid f2p noobs that wont fight even if the damn game is free because you're probably too stupid to work and pay for your damn subscription to enjoy a good game.

Enjoy your freestuff !  (they already took over Rift forums with the damn fucking stupid question : Is it gonna be F2P ???? )  NO IT WONT !!!!

Oh and Rudras, first tier is a free unllimited free trial, so there's lots of F2P playing because it doesnt cost anything... freaking F2P living in a damn rose world of free stuff coz they're too lazy to do better, enjoy your free stuff ! This way you'll be able to save for 4 new cars, 2 houses and 2 wives ! yeah ! i love F2P ! whhhoooohoooooo

Here come the F2rant, F2troll, F2report, F2BDTDFTWIW (Free2 be doing those damn stupid free 2 thing when i want) lol

    lost enuf time....

I agree with this guy, f2p is the worst thing that can happen to a game. This cames from a diehard LOTRO player. The commuinty gets killed and all you get is a transiant player base.

I've been in Rift since November and have toons up to lvl 37 and its aint any better than WAR. The only thing it has goin for it is that it has some extra's scabbed from EQ2 like collectibles.

I've long since left WAR as I was on an aussie server and that game was only good in its first 6-12 mths with good population. Once EA Mythic started nerfing classes it was on a downhill curve.

Atm PVP in Rift is terrible. It has Warfronts that are no way near as good as the Instances in WAR and there isnt any other pvp in the game except for open world pvp. Which is only good for those bastards who like ganking lowbies or people at respawn points.

Yes I know that Trion Worlds plans to release the Port after release which i guess will be like a zone battle over a Rift and shared quests but its a shame.  More focused pvp, ie like the pvp zones in WAR would have been nice.

I will admit the only decent thing Rift has going for it is the Dungeons which are on par with most AAA games of the last 5 to 10 yrs.

Though having some bugs Earthrise is looking very promising near release and apart from some instability due to massive increased server load lately it at least challenges to create something new.

yeah, thats the shame of it. WAR as it stands now  is actually a better game then Rift, but Rift has got the hype zerg rolling so yeah... chalk one up for mediocrity.

Anyone got an argument for why rift is the end of War?

    Didnt think so.

Will those playing war quit and play rift instead? On what facts/statistics do you build that on? Nothing?

I'm sure WAR players are far more interested in PvP. RIFT's pvp doesn't measure up to WAR's no matter how unbalanced or broken it is.

RIFT is a nice game but if you enjoy PvP its not exactly great.

I've enjoyed the PVP so far in RIFT as much as I enjoyed Warhammers . But I do think this game really needs to go f2play now . If DDO and Lotro can make a success of it I don't see why Warhammer can't . Same with AoC  .

I suspect they are working on that, I'll unsub the second they do of course since we've already seen that EA will happily sell items that give players an advantage in PvP for RL cash... Sword of Ultimate Truth $19.99, Armor of Godmode $29.99 Self Replenishing Ultra Heal Potion $19.99 etc.

Perhaps the developers just don't like the way f2p goes. Honestly i prefer paying a simple £8 a month and get the whole game rather than spend cash on quest packs, potions, items and so on.

Also i don't think the game is struggling enough to warrent a f2p solution. T1 is pretty busy and T4 is also busy. T2-3 are different but thats to be expected, even WoW is dead around those times.

If SWG can survive this long with a subscription, any other game with a sub can.

Been in the rift betas since the first and trust me, it wont kill war.  I only pvp in one game and that is war.  I haven't found any other pvp focused game I enjoy more than war and I have tried many.

Going f2p will be the end of war.  I haven't seen a pvp focused game that is f2p that isn't f2p - play to win.  You just can't do it.  I'm not subbed to war atm because of rll issues, but going back to it later this week.  I always come back, becuase there is nothing better imo.

    PS.

Dont mention eve-online.  I played that from beta until 2008.  It's a whole nother animal and that would be like comparing apples and oranges.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

I don't doubt it can tick over on subscription basis .The question is can it be more profitable on a f2play hybrid model and if DDO and Lotro are anything to go by yes it proberbly can . More profit =more development . Also in the hybrid model you can still opt to pay your 8 pounds and have the same access as you have now . The question is how will it effect the community . In Lotro its been very minimal you still get a very decent and helpful community playing . Warhammer is somethinig I enjoyed and I still play it when they  offer welcome back events but its something I would only want to play on a casual basis and maybe pay a fee here and there for access to certain content . Possibly they should make t1-3 free to play and charge for content beyond that .

Sorry but I disagree RIFT is far from a mediocre game . Its not perfect by any means and its pretty generic but its also very playable and a lot of fun and certainly the best mmo to be released since WoW . Warhammers good too but if it had even been half the game RIFT appears to be I would still be playing it now .

I can't see the model for LOTRO/DDO working for WAR. I think the only way to go at the moment would be either extending the endless trial to T2 or T3 up to level 30. (T3 ends at 39 and your RR can overtake your rank at 37 i think, having the whole of T3 endless would mean players can reach RR100 effectively destroying the point in subbing.

Or lowering the subscription cost. Perhaps something like $5-9.

In LOTRO it is a heavily focused PvE game if i am not mistaken. In a heavily focused PvP game things can get ugly with a cash shop.

you are lvl 37. that means you play on an alpha server. being lvl 37 and not knowing about the pvp in Rift seems like you are talking out of somewhere that is not your mouth. check out ancient wardstones just to name one example next time you log in. Where ever you logged in before it probably was not rift...

Nah, it will be GW2 that will be the nail in the coffin.

At least all WAR players I know are in it for the RvR and Rifts strong points is it's dungeons and character customization. Those suck in WAR, I doubt many players play WAR for brilliant dungeon designs. As for character customization it is not really either WAR strong point.

GW2s "The mists" and Guild Vs Guild battles will however go up against WARs battlegrounds and keep sieges and here I see problems for WAR.

It might be able to continue anyways, I do guess that most of the players remaining are hardcore WAR fans but GW2 will be a tough nut to crack.

It's not Guild Vs Guild in The Mist it's WvsW -World vs World.....Server Vs Server. Instead of Realm vs Realm like in DAOC it's three servers vs each other instead of three factions. Everybody on your server in the mist is on the same side, that includes guilds.

The battlegrounds are the same as WOW type battle grounds it's the mist where the sieges and land lumber resources  control will take place, that's WvsW.

    http://www.warhammerfeeds.com/2010/09/12/guild-wars-2-trying-to-be-like-daoc/

Ah my bad i understand what you are saying..my apologies.

I agree 100% it will be GW2 not RIFT.
