What's after WoW?

AdvancedTechAdvancedTech Member UncommonPosts: 165

As everyone knows, WoW is the holy grail of MMORPG games. I've gotten rather tired of this game, I recently tried Champions Online, and it's an alright game but I don't see much population. My question is, what comes after WoW? I guess you could say in terms of population.

How is it the holy grail?  If you are only looking at the amount of money made or population I can sorta see where you are coming from.  Although, as a MMORPG, it really isn't all that special.  It has done nothing to further the genre; probably hindered it instead.

Since you only are asking about population I don't seen anything coming out that will reach those numbers.  Blizzard is a king of marketing.  They could sell a hot steaming pile of crap (literally) and people will sing thier praises for it.

It's only been the Holy Grail for 6 years. It is about that time for next gen games to take the throne. I think it might be a team effort too. We have GW2, Rift, SWTOR, FFXIV and a few others about to hit the gaming world by storm, all within the next year. Suffice it to say, I think, population wise, many of these games are going to grab people left and right.

heck, I know I'll be playing all of them. Not all at once of course, but that's what makes it so great. I'll be playing Cataclysm, but with these coming out, I won't be spending a ton of time in WoW after these games launch. At least nowhere near as much time as I have in the past 5 years due to horrible competition.

Bring on the Next Gen games!

Well, since WoW is the worlds largest baby sitter I would imagine that college and sex is the next big adventure for WoW players.

    In terms of population?  Nothing.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

GuildWars 2 is my next game after WoW. There has not been a single thing that I have seen that is making me NOT want to buy this game. The Secret World, who knows when that will come out, looks interesting in the effect that it's a skill based system.

SWTOR and Rifts don't really have much appeal to me. Bioware seems to be playing it too safe with SWTOR at least for my tastes.

Rifts does look interesting, especially the multiclassing system and Rifts popping up from time to time.

The nice thing about GW2 is that it's buy 2 play...so I can play that and still maintain a sub somewhere else.

I cancelled my WoW subs back in June this year and I have been scourging the internet on what to play next. So far, I kept going back into playing my old RTS games. I'm currently saving for GW2 because I'm going full out on it, buying the CE version, and all other stuff. So far I've saved $30 instead of feeding it to the glutonous WoW.

    Ready for GW2!!!

    No they didn't.

I used to play EQ2 and I was in a raid with clan and I thought to myself, wouldnt that be cool if you could craft a cannon or catipult that would require a full team to craft as well as use. Then i thought, well wouldnt it basically be cool if you could combined an RTS with an RPG.

ironically not but 2 days after that thought I got exposed to Darkfall and have been a fan ever sincee but in all fairness darkfall has yet to really do a fantastic job around RTS but it is their goal.

so in short, what is after WoW? RTSRPG

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

    No they didn't.

    Actually, yes they did.

"In Final Fantasy XIV, players will be allowed eight hours per class at full experience points. After the eight hours are up, the amount of experience gained will decrease over the next seven hours. Once these seven hours are up, you will receive no experience points for the rest of the week. Players have the option to change classes at any time in FFXIV, so they’d have eight hours of gameplay per week, per class.

Actually, they said you can't play a single class more than 8 hours a week without an XP penalty. They did not in fact say this was going to stay this way. Nor did they say you couldnt' play longer than 8 hours. Nor did they....yeah not worth the effort anymore.

Anyway, answer to the title of this thread. Whats after WoW - LIFE! Really, there are people in the world still, I know it sounds crazy but the birds and cats and cake makers are all still there and running around.

I get it, so because I played WoW I automatically have no life. These forums just get worse and worse!

I wouldn't say its the holy grail, in fact, the majority of original MMORPG gamers wouldn't.

WoW might be the best of the mini game/casual/small scale MMO (though you can hardly even call it massive, and the focus of the game is on single player progression),  but it certainly doesn't  hold a candle to the pioneer/golden age MMOs like EQ/DAoC/UO/AC

After WoW? Anything. Might want to avoid the clones, like LotRO, maybe you can try a real MMO like Eve or Darkfall

  • emikochanemikochan Member UncommonPosts: 290

the f2p games have bigger player counts. Just look at PWI.

Personally, GW2 is going to rock. Much more skillbased and pvp / community focus without the silly looting.

Removing loot / killsteal drama is probably one of the most important things they snuck in.

And it doesn't even need a sub :)

If i get a sub, EVE will get it most likely.

I left WoW a while ago and never looked back, maybe you should graduate onto something more complicated. WoW is good for beginners :)

Actually no, you may have a life outside WoW, but how would we know. How many characters do your have at lvl 80? How many of them have over T5 gear on them? How many crafts are capp'd on skill? How many Exhaulted reps do they each have? How many Achievements do each of them have? Had we known the answers to those we might be able to determine that you had a life outside WoW. BUT...since all you did was ask what was after WoW, and you called it the Holy Grail of MMOs, well you should have expected some smart assed responses. Not all of us think WoW is the best thing since sliced bread. To me, even though I did play it for about 4 years, its about 8th down the ladder on my scale of MMOs. So finding something to do after you leave that game shouldnt' be that hard, if your willing to actually go out and try something new.

Despite how you guys feel about a game - WoW dominates the market, and has, without being touched, for years. Think thats what he was getting at about the "holy grail". And your hate for the game does supersede the fact 8 other million people think differently.

Saying this i quit WoW months ago, and havn't looked back not even once.

Darkfall is a good option to check out~ great game, though ... very unforgiving lol.

Fallen earth is also pretty cool

Eves combat was to boring for me, but you may like it.

  • RzepRzep Member UncommonPosts: 767

Being a person who has grown tired of WoW recently Id rather recommend that a person who has played WoW for an extended period of time try a game that is completely different or a bit more involved. Otherwise you might just get burned out on the whole genre. For me Fallen Earth has been a godsend. After being disapointed at the state of CoH and the still rather...lackluster quality of f2p games, which in many cases succeed in copying all of WoWs elements while at the same time  significantly lowering their quality I thought I would have to abandon mmos altogether.

Your not exactly correct there but thats ok. Take note though that just because somethign dominates a particular market does not in fact mean it is the best thing in that market. What is means is they know how to market thier product better than the other guys do. Take a walk in your local Walmart and see what PC MMO games you find on thier shelf. Watch TV and see how many MMORPG games are having prime time advertisements. Blizzard is by far the king of main stream advertising and distribution on thier games, thats thier strong point and the one thing that made them what they are today. There are plenty of games out there that are just as good, some better than this supposed holy grail, they just dont have the exposure that Blizzard gives WoW. Number of subs just means they know how to reach more people, it doesn't mean they have something nobody else can give out.

I started playing RPGs with EQ, SWG and then tried some WoW.  UO I left out (no free trial = sucked for them).  None really appealed to me.  They were less about strategy and more about EQ, Epeen, and button mashing.

Instead, I went back to old game types I actually enjoyed in the past:  MMO wargames with strategy involved and less button mashing.  I actually enjoyed the new World of Tanks that I recently tried.

Swtor may capture my attention but, if it doesn't have something more substantial than EQ and button mashing, I'd rather not even try it.

Real Life is the most grinding game i have ever seen. And it sucks in several aspects.

    - PVP: It's just fun if you are playing with an overpowered class. Otherwise you can suffer the "Broken Bones" debuff and being unable to play PVP again for several months. Or even you can lose your character and all of its progress. The GM doesn't reimburse anything from player harassment.

    - PVE: Sucks, it's too "grindy", you must do the same things every day. There are annoying quest like sleeping for several hours, you must pay attention to your stats, they can decrease if you don't eat and drink too often. Sometimes you suffer a sickness debuff for no reason. And sometimes, you are obliged to complete certain quests, with no rewards after them, and serious penalties if you don't.

    - Joining a guild requires to farm a lot of reputation with certain factions. Sometimes you must complete humiliating quests and, when you get in, you haven't any guaranties of rising your rank, regardless your performance or available time to spend for them.

    - The housing system sucks, it's grindier than an asian MMO. Even you can lose all your assets randomly, and the insurance doesn't pay the original costs, just the actual costs.

    - The flirting (and marrying) system(s) really sucks. You need to complete enormous quest chains, farm tons of reputation with just one NPC. And even in the best case, randomly, you can fail and need to start again from the beginning with other NPC. Neither you can use any kind of "undo" option or anything.
