Allods Online: Gipat Goes Live July 7th, Replaces Fear of Death

MikeBMikeB MMORPG.com Community ManagerQueens, NYPosts: 5,717Administrator Uncommon

gPotato has announced that patch 1.1 "Revelations of Gipat" for Allods Online will be going live on July 7th, and along with its many features and changes, is some significant news on the often controversial Fear of Death mechanic's front. Significant how, you ask? It's going away.

image

That's right, the much maligned Fear of Death mechanic (whereby your stats are reduced by 25% for each death) will be replaced with a new mechanic that basically curses one of the player's item slots upon death, however, it will only negatively impact the player if it lands on a slot filled by an item of Rare or higher quality. In this case, the Rare or higher quality item will be "cursed" and have its stats inverted.

The curse is removable using Scrolls of Purification that can be purchased from the game's Item Shop or from other players. Players can proactively avoid curses by equipping themselves with Holy Charms which will stack up to 1000 and will consume one unit for every death. Like the aformentioned scrolls, Holy Charms will be available from the Item Shop and can be purchased from other players.

Making things a bit more interesting, bosses in dungeons and raids will now dropped cursed items as well, allowing players the chance to acquire more loot that may be quite useful once the curse is removed. Which actually sounds like a pretty neat addition.

View the official announcement here.

News of this patch have exploded in an uproar on Allods forums.

    - Mounts were initially announced as free and obtainable through a quest. Now they are removed to temporary and available via quest or cash shop.

    - Whenever you die there is a percent chance per blue/purple/orange item equipped to be cursed. Cursed items give negative stats and can only be de-cursed by purchasing items through the cash shop. As well raid bosses now have a chance to drop extra cursed items, meaning you will have to pay to un-curse and use them.

    - As well certain items such as respec potions have been removed from quests and drops to the cash shop.

This patch is not themed after some Allod named Gipat, it is themed after the cash shop and several ways to force micro payments on the already declining player base. It is truly too bad because Allods had potential, but the abysmal management, GM's asking players to take gpotato surveys (credit card scams for the most part), and treatment of their community has effectively signed a death warrant for this game.

I completely agree with Kamax, I liked the game in its Russian beta version and it has/had a lot of potential but malicious decisions are ruining it except for those accepting this nasty version of cash shop.

And I'm dissatisfied at this article who dares present this change as a positive one, all in all they are replacing a death penalty by an item penalty and YOU STILL HAVE TO PAY TO COUNTER DEATH EFFECTS. This is lame and i'm not p(l)aying to have my items uncursed. Seriously this is why wanabee "free to play" and/or cash shop are such evils compared to subscription.

first off no game is free 2 play they are free to download and start playing but if you wanna get anywhere you are going to have to pay money on a regular basis. How else will people make money.

That doesn't make it any less of a free to play game. Runes of Magic is free to play, but if you want to get to a high level you have to pay money, or do you? You can just grind mobs until you have reached max level regardless whether it's hard or easy to do - It's still free to play.

          ^ OPINION

When something is PARTLY open to the public, you do not say it is public. When something is partly free as in "buy 2 get the third one free" you do not say it's free...same here. When you cannot reach a certain level of competitivity in the game without spending $ IT IS JUST NOT FREE.

Please read what I wrote, this is not an opinion it's a fact. You can reach the max level in Runes of Magic without using any money, the downside is that it's a lot harder. If anything you're paying to be on a competitive edge, but that doesn't make the game any less free now does it?

What does Runes of Magic have to do with this game?  The CS are run differently.  I also agree with Kamax.  This is why I steer clear of F2P.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

The f2p misnomer is again misunderstood because everyone misinterprets the word free.  There really are no f2p games out there, they are free to try, but if you really want to play any of these games without horrendous grinding, it is most certainly NOT free.   I remember playing dungeon runners where they had a feature for the free players certain of the better drops were unuseable, I did not see anyone complaining.  So this is not really a new feature in the f2p world, just presented in a bit different manner.

I tend to avoid the gpotato games as they seem to a bit greedier than some of the other production companies.

In the end you get out of a game what you put into it.  If you won't invest any cash into the game, don't expect to enjoy the game to it's fullest, unless of course you are one of those rare individuals that has infinite time to devote to a game.

missing the point much are we?

I think the folks complaining about f2p companies mean this:

Its better (cheaper and you get a fully developed game minus most bugs and other issues in f2p games) to just pay a $15 fee a month and enjoy a game where you can be compettitive or whatever, than to HAVE to spend $100s of Dollars a month just to be competitive as per the f2p model.

Which is better: being a $15-25 fee per month to get a game where developers have

    a) actual CONTENT, not *content* as in grinding 50,000 mobs a day (which are the same skins usually just different names) to make you buy from the cash shop to get to the *fun* part of pvp

b)Customer service where the players are cared for and helped when needed and LISTENED TO

    c) a higher quality of community that p2p games usually bring

    d) A game that really has to rely on pleasing their player base (i.e making the game FUN) rather then putting the player base in a virtual skinner box that players PAY to play (lured in by the *Free* aspect)

    Or a disaster like allods?

Everyone understands that devs arent doing it for free, but seriously why would I pay for a half finished game that forces you to compete with how much money you throw down rather than your ACTUAL skill?

THIS is why F2P games will always be second rate, (except for guild wars) and reserved for asians who really have no experience playing actual DECENT, well made games deserving of the price that is asked of it, its also why these kinds of crap tacular games  THRIVE in asia, thats all they have to choose from for the most part.

In the west, most gamers can smell bullshit from a mile away. Those who dont and get sucked into f2p games are the suckers who deserve to have their money scammed away from them.

This is sad news. I think Allods is a fun game that is being strangled by it's item shop. When I heard the title of this article, I thought, "yeah". FOD going away! Then I read it. Oh, replacing it with something much, much worse. FOD was a pain, but it went away with time. Now we HAVE to pay to uncurse items? I already have 3 lockboxes I can't open without shelling out cash, now cursed items are going to require cash to uncurse? This game is gonna be trampled under the boothills of greed, and it is such a shame. Really a neat little game that is no longer worth playing.

You're right. It is "free" to play. Of course, what you're getting for free is an experience engineered to be inferior so that you have money, you will spend it. The only people I can imagine spending more than a dozen hours playing an F2P without pulling out their wallet are kids without credit cards who are just happy to have SOMETHING to play. When I was young, I would have killed to have free access to the kinds of games that are "free" today. Having said all that, the games are engineered to suck if you don't spend money - whether it's because of the length of the grind or the inferior experience. Nothign is free in this world - except when someone is trying to sell you something bigger.

The reason the "free to play" (yeah right!) cash shop business model fails. You will never here that free to play puppet writer on this site mention this though.

I've played LOTS of F2P titles that don't require your bank acct # to play efficiently except for Allods Online

This game was fail soon as they slipped up with the cash shop initially...

I will fully enjoy watching this title crash and burn from some jerkwad greedy pigs ruining it.
