Second Life: An Interview with SpaceJunky

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Second Life is an MMO like no other. Not so much a game as a virtual world, the Linden Labs experiment mirrors the real-world in many ways, including up and coming musical acts. MMORPG.com Second Life expert David Greene (known in game as Arra Jinx) sits down with Shakti Cianci of the band SpaceJunky to talk about Second Life, the band and how it call comes together.

It has been asked “Is Second Life really a game at all?” I would tend to say Second Life is far more than a game, or role-play experience. Second life is a virtual world where the only limits are that of the user, instead of the world itsself. Dreams can be dreamt one day, and realized the next is this wondrous achievement known as Second Life. One such incredible story is that of the band SpaceJunky, who through the power of Second Life, have truly brought their music to the world. I was fortunate enough to be able to sit down with Shakti Cianci lead singer of the band and talk about Second Life, and the music Shakti and SpaceJunky have given to us.

SpaceJunky is a wonderful example of what Second Life has to offer. I’ll be posting their upcoming concerts in this thread if anyone is interested in seeing them live in SL.

SL is free for a basic membership so what do you got to lose, and who knows you might find your own second life.

If its not a game why is it even here?  The makers said its not a game..the interview states its not a game.  This a gaming website...

SL is a truly interactive virtual world, like none other in the industry. Nearly all the content in SL is created by the community of SL. MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Unfortunately most companies forget the RP part. There is role-play in SL above and beyond anything I have ever found anywhere else. As far that to why it’s here on mmorpg.com, well the name of the site should be enough to clarify any confusion.

M – yup its massive, largest world out there as a matter of fact, and SL is still growing.

M – Yes sir its multiplayer over 50k people logged into the same game world at any given time.

Lots of companies claim to be able to give you 50k at a time, but SL does it

O – Online, again yes and its uptime is awesome.

RP - everything from GSB rp to Gor rp. Truly something for everyone.

G – Yea it’s a game, but its also a virtual world platform.

Second Life falls within the unique category of Graphic MOO.  You remember one of those sandbox environments where people could pretty much script at will, but there was no actual game involved?

On the other hand, I've tried to get into Second Life a few times, but the horrid engine its built in drives me insane. If someone built something like Second Life with an engine that gave you a solid, grounded feel, I suspect they could completely take over this niche.

Some of these issues can be resolved with a better viewer. There are some great ones out there and I hope to cover some of them in an upcoming review.

Great job fielding questions. I had the same issue with the default viewer, nice to know there are additional viewers I can try to see what I think of the game at that point.

Do you have any links or are they 3rd party?

    Thanks!

Second Life got a dark side as well. I wont link anything here but google some and do some research if interested. Suffice to say, what I found led me to never touch this game/platform ever again and write Linden Labs (developer and publisher) off as perverse pigs or atleast hugely ignorant and passive.

All I can say is this review attempts portray 2nd Life as this all encompassing game,  when in reality, all it is is a glorified chat room.   I think the reviewer needs to get out of his fantasy world before attempting another review.

you mentioned gor rp.  basically gorean rp is about this planet of slaves women controlled by men.  thats the crux of that awful "sci fi" (i threw up a little in my mouth as i typed sci-fi).

and that band isnt even any good.....

Far be it that the trolls come flaming as always in any forum, nothing different than here move along... Second Life? Yep a glorified chat room that has nothing but porn and sickness romping around everywhere you go.

Believe that and your just as noobish as you can get. Honda, IBM, CMB, oh wait how about Amazon or Penn State university? There's Many more large corporations that I could list that use Second Life for many reasons such as Webinars, Virtual Education, Architectual design, gaming research as well as many other things. One of the big things in SL is Roleplaying and has a quite large roleplay population. Gor? Yeah thats there, not my thing, but I don't go there... Oh wait did I say roleplaying? Lets see, its Massive, It's Multi-player, It's def Online...Hmm what else oh it has Roleplaying....Is it a game?... Haven't decided on that one. but 4 out of 5 guess works for me.... The creators made it with the idea of Freedom of Expression...So are there dark sides in it....Absolutely.... Don't like it? Don't go to those places simple as that and I give kudos to those who push to keep that freedom because try that in any other game and thats an insta-pop ban.

Only gripe I would have is that their physics engine is pretty primitive compared to say Blizzard, Sony CCP and the other hardcore developers. They fix that and it would really be competitive.

    Nuff said...

As for spacejunky, I think they have a great idea and hope they are sucessful in doing so. LOL, They not that good? Better do some research on that before you get foot in mouth since the the main singer there writes grammy award winning songs for some of the top performers in the industry...

It always cracks me up when people, who disagree with your post, only recourse is to label you as a troll.  Who is the troll there?

Roleplay sure, some do that in 2nd Life, you can roleplay in a chatroom anywhere.  Doesn't change what 2nd Life, a virtual chat room with some eye candy attached.  While a few do actually attempt to play the game 99% of the others are just there for the chat.

So if 99% of your clientele is just there for chatting, rather easy to label it as a chatroom.  I rest my case.

Obviously you didn't read all the posts. If you did you would have realized it wasnt a reply to your post. 1944 posts you've done..you should know better.

There are truely some very innovative people doing some incredible things in 2nd LIfe.  It all depends on what you want out of the game.
