When it's grey you'll have to wait until the game checks every file in the darkfall folder (dfdata_0000.sfad etc). If that's taking a long time you are propably experiencing lag or timeouts.
After the file check is complete a "patching completed" message will appear at the top of the login form and you may be able to create your Character. Before that the game tries to verify if all files are updated.
