Have a some questions for Ryzom fans.

I had a few questions for your TSoR guys if you don't mind. What exactly are The Ryzom Ring? From what I read it sounds like player created instances. If this is true how does it fit into the world immersively? Do you just click on some map and end up in some player made area, that would seem a bit out of place to me. I like a world to feel like a world. I don't like teleporting to some playground and then teleporting back to the real world. I was just curious if they had a way to pull it off tactfully or am I misunderstanding what they are.

I love a sandbox type game and also I love the idea of skill based progression. My last question for the community is how group oriented is the game. I dislike a solo MMORPG personally. I enjoy grouping and fighting large creatures one individual can not handle themselves. Does this sound like something that happens in Ryzom frequently?

Thank you for your time.

Ryzom is definitely more group friendly than solo friendly. Are creatures absolutely unsoloable? -- not really, with really good gear and tactics one can take normal creatures down one on one. However there are roaming named mobs, boss mobs, and civ boss's that require groups.

If you've checked out some of the videos on You-yube, I think you've prob seen a few creatures that'll perk your interest.

The Ring allows you to create your own scenario, complete with landscape items, NPC's, mobs, quest lines, etc. You edit your scenario, and then when you like it, you publish it. Ring terminals across the land let players pick from the published scenarios; these become instances. You can only give what you have as rewards, you cannot set up some easy kill to get XP. No easy way to exploit the Ring.

My personal Ring scenario is "Olepi's Moon";. the RPG story line is that the karavan have landed on a small moon of Atys, and there are some tribes there with items of interest. Retrieve the items through sneaking, quest completion, or mere brute killing, and you get some rewards. (Currently, 125 lvl 50 cats (2X the XP while they last) crystals for every item retrieved).

As for grouping, the game is very fun as a digger. You explore, map out, and prospect your favorite spots, and then dig. A helper to "careplan" makes digging go faster and better.

However, if you want to really explore, or try to kill anything, you will almost always need a group. It becomes very difficult to travel, even with a group, in the high level areas. Healers are always in demand, and even a low level healer (like a 50 say), can contribute. You can make a career out of solo digging, but fighting is a different story. Grouping follows the normal tank/mage/healer trend, except remember that everyone can do everything, so the tanker may back-heal the healer to make things go faster :)

About Ring, nope, you donì't go to the player made areas clicking the world. They are only accessible at special terminals into main capitals. The ring is also the only way to meet with people from other servers, as it is shared. The ring is meant mainly for RP as you cannot gain xp into it. Anyway i think this is the only tool around that give a player the way to build a whole dungeon or quest story, with full control of movements of mobs/npc, behaviour, text quests, timers, triggers, etc... A complex editor.

The real world is a single instance, except the apartments and the guild halls, and is big. The ring doesn't affect at all the normal gameplay.

The game is partly soloable but it is group oriented. If you like large creatures well, in Atys are living some very nasty and large creatures you have ever met in games :)

So, groups hunting large creatures are common.

The RP explanation for the Ring terminals is that they are basically teleportation access points to distant regions. This is established by the dialogue of the NPCs who stand next to the terminals.

Initially it was planned by Nevrax that Players could vote on the "Player made" contend of others and after a given amount of time the scenario(s) with the most votes would´ve been implemented as a fixture into the world. I very much liked the Idea.

Additionally, or as a variation on this theme, it was suggested that Players could host their Scenarios permanently on company owned servers for a nominal fee. Neither got developed beyond the initioal stage sadly.

We´ll have to wait and see what Spiderweb does with it.

Ryzom, we dare to be different.
    Do you dare to adapt?

Okay I am pretty excited now. Definitely will be giving this title a try. Thanks for all the information.

The Ring has got to be the coolest addition to an MMO I have seen yet.  It is just a terrible shame that it didn't take off nearly as well as I'd hope when it was released.  Ryzom just needs some financial backing to get it back into active development.  With additions as original as the Ring, I couldn't wait to see what else they were going to add to this truely unique MMO.

I found my old Ring Scenario, Olepi's Moon, and put it up last night. Got a visitor and it was fun to watch how he solved the various quests, etc. The Moon is aimed at lvl's 50 and below, and I hand out cats (crystals that double your XP up to lvl 50) as a reward. Look for my Ring going online and come join me!

I always announce that Olepi's Moon has risen before I put it online

I haven't gotten a chance to play yet but looking forward to it this weekend. I have one more question of the community. I think an abundance of instant travel really kills the immersion of a online world. How do you feel about Ryzom's travel? Does it mesh into the world well to where it doesn't feel like it is there for the reason of a needed game mechanic rather just fits the world? I hope that made sense, I am tired at the moment.

Teleportation fits into the world, in my opinion as a hardcore roleplayer. It fits into the technology vs. magic aspect, with the Kami presumably using magic to transport homins, and the Karavan presumably using technology to accomplish the same. It is also one of Atys's mysteries - is teleportation truly owed to the factions or is it an innate ability of the planet that homins may eventually be able to harness themselves? The fact that there are portals between continents (a.k.a. valleys or plateaus in the bark of the planet's surface) is what supports the idea that teleportation might be innate. The portals do not appear to be controlled by either faction.

The Ring terminals don't appear to be factional either, but as the NPC dialogue is the only lore we have to go on and it is nonspecific in that regard, one can't be sure.

In Ryzom,. you can teleport instantly to any portal; the catch is that you had to visit that portal in person, before getting a TP ticket. So in Ryzom, you have to "trek" the first time, and then can buy return tickets. This is a totally organic and natural way to handle it, IMHO. Large groups can trek between the major cities, thereby allowing all the group to return via TP, a fun activity in Ryzom.

These TP locations are based on your faction (kami, karavan, neutral) and if you use all your tickets, you will have to trek back there to buy more.

Forgetting to buy tickets is both annoying and fun...

Annoying because you cannot go to the location you want to go to. But it is fun too, because you'll have to trek there with a group, or sneak through dangerous territory to get there all by yourself.

I got one guildy who refuses to buy any teleport tickets at all, just for the sake of fun. So we escort him quite regulary to other towns, and I think he's a master sneak to reach those places on his own. Beside that, he has to think about what to do in that land, cause he can't go back the easy way either...

Still excited. I will see everyone in game this weekend. I think they handled the travel in a immersive way. I appreciated all the great information, I can already tell the community will be a great one to be a part of.
