New Server & More

Hello everyone

Just a heads up to let you know that we just installed a much more powerful web server for MMORPG.COM.

The new machine runs dual Pentium 3.06Ghz XEON with 1MB cache (+ hyperthreading), 2GB system memory and uses the new Serial ATA drive technology.

In addition to the hardware boost, we also upgraded to a Windows 2003 OS, with the new Cold Fusion MX 6.01.

All in all, we are seeing about a 1000% performance increase with processors running idle 99% of the time (last server ran 70% average cpu).  This new server should allow us to grow big and strong...so w00t!

(for the record, the old web server was a single P3 1Ghz with 512MB memory and old SCSI technology)

In other news, we discovered that the HTML file size for the main game list was 350KB (this is not including images!).  After using Javascript routines to handle some page generation on the browser side, we were able to reduce this to 102KB.  Users with slower connections should notice a DRAMATIC difference in loading the main list!
