Rift News - Earlier today, a $100 Rift loot crate that contained the chance for a premium mount raised the ire of the game's community. Subsequently, it was removed from the in-game shop, an action that was explained briefly by Community Manager Linda Brasse. In a new post on Reddit, Trion Worlds CEO Scott Hartsman has a more extended letter to the community.

    Hey Scott,

    I just wanted to wish you Merry Christmas and hope you enjoy yourself. Don't be reluctant to drink a bit more, life is short and filled with worries. Like that burden you carry now, oh monsieur Scott, it's a doozy, am i right? Who knew? Consumers are behaving erratically this past month. They just don't accept or turn their head the other way when tricks like this happen.

    I am not sure what your opinion is on the matter but i have a theory. The world is in turmoil, there is an economic crisis and people are starting to think twice about the importance of pixels in their lives. Maybe we can collectively try and get them back on our track. Blizzard provoked its community to create porn and now they're selling skimpy outfits for their virtual pornstars. How about something like that? You have to show some ass in order to get some ass.

    I am closing this letter Scott,i just wanted to share my thoughts with you. If you want to hire me contact me here or through my character in Eve Online. I am a scammer like you in that game, i sit in Jita all day selling fake boxes.

    They're "listening" because all the media attention they're getting, and the majority of the comments, are all extremely negative. Just like EA "listened" to feedback about lockboxes and said they were fine...until the outcry and negative media coverage got loud enough that they were forced to actually take action.

    If they were actually listening, they wouldn't have released this nonsense to begin with.

    Is it just me or did this feel exactly like an EA reddit post by them? "We screwed up but we'll continue to work on it until we find a way to get what we want from you....I mean....we'll continue working on it until we find a way that satisfies both ends of the gaming consumer spectrum." As for rare quality mounts, how were they rare quality exactly? Half of them were just recolored 5-10$ mounts....

    I diagree with folks claiming this is a morally bankrupt company because of the boxes. Everyone is doing it now so I agree that it's a bad move. On GW2 they recently had a similar reaction to ALL RNG box mount skins and on ESO it's bad as well the number of mounts you can by outside of the RNG boxes is down to 1 per year.

    It's getting really bad across the industry. I think the best way to handle it is to get on reddit and tell all of these game developers no we don't want that, and to make it a letter that addresses all of these developers in the start of the letter.

    It will send the message industry wide to tell them stop trying to gamble with our money. It's dishonest.

    I have trouble even typing out the sentence, they tried to sell $100 dollar loot boxes with a chance at 1 in 42 mounts in them, with out bursting out laughing.

    So EA games loses against the playerbase and now every other company decides "lets put a loot box and then pull it out early to show that we are better than EA games and listen to our players"

    Word of Advice..
    Look at the signs..

    Westerners have revolved and won out against this kind of system to the point EAs stunt and the player reaction reached major newspapers across North America and Europe, along with Major Television Networks. There were even software developers airing "anti-loot box" commercials to show that they aren't as low as EA games...

    Trion Worlds being based in California..
    Shame on you for trying to see if Westerners would succumb to the very same pay-for-everything system in the F2P model that Easterners willingly give up everything for... Shame on you!

    My advice to you is simply
    If you want to prove you are better,
    Don't even think about including it in the game to begin with....

    It wouldn't surprise me to see tactics like this advertised at places like Walmart in the coming years. "Hurry now and you can get a CHANCE at 1 of 4 of the items in this bundle for just 29.99+tax!"

    ughh . . . If I was a CEO, I would have seen what happened with EA and battlefront. I think they did this on purpose and then sent this BS letter. How could you not know that it was BS to begin with. I know it is a F2P game and you need to monetize . . .but so is path of exile . . . and yes they did add loot boxes but they are like 5 bucks each I think and isn't BS and there are other options.

    Oh well. I wouldn't take this seriously. I'll add Trion to my list of publishers/developers which suck. I still think NCsoft is king of the shit hill, but Trion is coming.

    But some cling to this ridiculous thought that as long as SOMETHING is in he box it's not gambling ecause you are guaranteed to "win" something.   It's an utter joke and it's time seems to be coming to a rapid end.

    expansion , 40$ for 1/3 the content and no updates on sight nor class balance at all since the balance dev left rift 4th dev that leaves on 2017. at least the devs removed Planewalker: Water, and Earring Slot was free for all

    Here's a hint to these companies. The definition of "microtransaction" is a purchase of a good, typically digital in nature, done with a "micropayment".

    Let's look at the definition of "micropayment": A financial transaction that involves a very small sum of money.

    $100 isn't a micropayment. Your game isn't funded by microtransactions. If you want to be a title funded by microtransactions, none of your virtual goods should cost more than a few cents, which is more what they're worth in the first place.
