Dell announces availability dates for AMD Threadripper and Intel Sky Lake-X

Do I recommend buying one from Dell?  Of course not.  But when they're available there, they're probably available elsewhere, too.  Without further ado:

AMD Threadripper:  July 27
Intel Sky Lake-X:  August 22

Most likely, those Sky Lake-X parts are only the ones up to 10 cores or so, as Intel hasn't announced specs on the larger ones that seemed to be announced in a panicky reaction to Threadripper.  Of course, that's only relevant to people looking to pay more than $1000 for a desktop CPU.

Yes, I'm calling it Sky Lake-X, not Core-X.  Because who cares about Kaby Lake-X?  If you want four fast cores, get a Kaby Lake chip that is available today and save $100 or so on the motherboard.

The other part of the announcement is that Dell signed some deal with AMD to have exclusive access to the 16-core Threadripper parts among major OEM vendors until the end of this year.  That doesn't exclude smaller, boutique vendors of the sort that you might actually buy a gaming rig from if not inclined to build one yourself.  And it certainly doesn't mean you can't buy your own CPU and motherboard and assemble the computer yourself.  And it might not even be a restriction on the 12-core parts.  But it does mean that you're not getting a 16-core Threadripper CPU from HP or Lenovo this year.  Not that you wanted to, anyway.
