I got back into Darkfall in the beginning, 2009 I believe. It was a wild ride full of ups and downs but the actual games was awesome, the company that owned it was not. Fast forward to 2017 with BPG in charge, things have been just awesome! Beta was a blast and the nostalgia was at an all time high, so many memories rushed back and I felt like a dream had come true, I couldn't believe my favorite game had returned, and not just returned, it was better than ever before.

One by one BPG removed everything I hated from the old game and replaced it with something modern, fresh, and fun. The game evolved into what it always should have been. Each patch fine-tuned the game more and more and I can say emphatically that I am PUMPED for launch. I am sure this will be my ultimate moment in my 20 years of online gaming.

For those of you that haven't played Darkfall you might look at the graphics and misjudge the game. Sure, the graphics aren't amazing, but they're nice imo and the game looks great as you ride around, fight, and loot. And hey, it's not all about graphics, far from it, what matters most is gameplay, right? I've had my heart skip beats during pvp, my arms tense up, my hands shake, and I even panicked and got destroyed. The brutal defeats and thrilling victories really get into your system and keep you wanting more. That's why us oldschool fans are so excited, because *nothing* can replace Darkfall, and once you experience it you'll see that my statement is very true.

You really haven't pvped until you've played Darkfall, you just haven't. Whether you've played Wow arena, CS:GO at the highest level, or made Diamond in LoL, none of that can compare to Darkfall. Why? Because Darkfall is brutal on an extreme that you can't get from any of those games. Egos run high, defeats can crush a gamer, and victories can make you a god. You probably think I'm exaggerating because you likely just don't know how good pvp can actually feel.

Why is pvp so fun in Darkfall? Well, first of all the skill cap is VERY high. Second, there is no tab-targeting crap like in other mmos, this is pvp closer to a shooter but with advanced melee combat, healing, blinds, magic nukes, and lots more mixed in. It hurts to lose, man it hurts like nothing else. Sometimes you just get stomped and most people scramble for excuses, blaming their ping, their computer, someone's cheap weapon or race, or whatever, they can't handle it. When you win, man, it can be epic. I've won a 2v8 fight before and this is not a shooter where you just headshot people, 2v8 is very serious stuff. I've won 1v3 in a sub-optimal but explosive build, and I've gotten rocked more times than I can count. Many years later I can still remember those losses, but my pentas in LoL I can't recall, it all kinds of blends in because it just doesn't compare to Darkfall, nothing does.

And that's just the pvp, I love the pve too, I love gathering resources, opening chests, digging up treasure maps, crafting items with my name of them, there is just so much to do. I could go on forever but I'll leave it at this, as gamers we pass up on games all the time, just one screenshot we don't like, one race, one weapon, one whatever, it's easy to miss a gem and wind up playing some garbage game because you can't find something better. Don't let that be you, don't pass up on Darkfall, you will never find something like this again. See you at launch!

Wow , man almost sounds like a commercial , a PR dream , ... im almost convinced .. wait ... acct created 10 minutes ago .. with 1 post ........... seems suspicious ..

This is a new account, yes. I care enough about this game to create an account to post about it, other than that I won't be using this website because in all honesty, once I played Darkfall back in 2009 I've never been able to enjoy any other mmo. If you want to discredit my post based on the fact that this is a new account, that's your prerogative. Hopefully though you will consider what I've said, either way, hope you have fun with whatever you choose to play!

Edit: Speaking of post counts, what would you prefer, hearing from someone that played a slew of mmos and made thousands of posts about them, or a specialist from this specific game that is here to deliver the real news? Again, there is a reason I am not a regular on this website, I have no use, I already found Darkfall long ago and any other mmo I tried (after Darkfall was gone) only paled in comparison.

Pretty sure you have posted the same "You really haven't pvped until you've played Darkfall, you just haven't" as another user. Sorry dude, but you know nothing about my pvp experiences. The laughable part is you think that we think we pvp'd because of playing wow? You don't mention Daoc, UO, Shadowbane....because if you had actually played those you would have mentioned them instead of WoW.

I'd have to say the former. And seeing as most popular reviewers play and enjoy a lot of different games not just one, I'm betting that a popular opinion.  From the comments in this thread the game you love had one build option, so I can't see how that it can have better PvP than a game with no level process, just build options. And the game did fail, there usually is a reason for that beyond bad management. I very well might give it a try, only because there isn't much else out there holding my attention!

The game had some very serious flaws, I won't deny that. The big one was that to be competitive you practically had to afk macro for many hours and it gave you an unfair advantage over those that didn't. For me, that was close to a game killer, it bothered me a lot and I felt ripped off every time I lost. AV chose not to bother fixing that, they just let it happen, and that was their first large mistake. The fact that you could do everything was the next major problem, again, they didn't fix it but they did separate the game into two different "builds". They could have expanded on that, but they didn't. They did however have decent patches, that is until their lead developer left for another company, and that was basically the nail in the coffin.

Now to be clear, Darkfall was my favorite game, despite it's serious issues, and I did quit 3 or 4 times. The last time I quit I did not come back. However, Rise of Agon revamped the game and got rid of afk macroing and made a new and fair "leveling" system. That is initially what turned me on to Rise of Agon. They have stated that there will be build diversity but they have not given all the details, but what we do know is that players will be able to mi and match various specialties and I don't believe you can take all of them, you have to choose, so that is basically a skill cap in itself, something many people, myself included, wanted.

As it stands right now, build diversity is not a strength of RoA. That said, pvp is incredibly fun and for many of us Darkfall has ruined all other mmo pvp experiences because it really is one of a kind. Once build diversity gets added (my guess is 1 to 3 months after launch) the game is going to have it all imo.

Regarding your last comment, that's exactly how I have felt for a long time. After Darkfall Online I went through a long struggle of trying to find games to play, and my immediate instinct was to replace it with another mmo. I tried a lot of them but they just felt so much weaker than Darkfall, especially the pve aspect. Many mmos had build diversity but they were class based systems and I really don't like that, I prefer making my own builds. I moved on to Crimecraft and Path of Exile and eventually League of Legends, none had pvp as exciting as Darkfall but they were all fantastic games. Still, I haven't played any other mmos since Darkall except for Darkfall Unholy Wars. If Darkfall Rise of Agon wasn't coming then I would potentially be done with online gaming. Anyway, I hope you give it a try, it's fun as hell and BPG really cares about the game.

@Viper482 Sorry, I didn't see your message. Those 3 games I mentioned were just off the top of my head, I wasn't trying to name the best pvp games because I haven't played every game, but you are right, I did not play the 3 games you mentioned. The devs have though and they try to take inspiration from those games, but idk what they're taking because I don't know anything about those games lol.

I am not posting on multiple accounts though. I heard about this interview, read it, and decided to post my thoughts. I assume the reason you guys are suspicious of me is because maybe new accounts are used to tilt the scales regularly? I don't use this website but I have looked for mmos to play here many times in the past, this is truly my first day of posting. I am a bit sad that this is the kind of welcome I get, as if I have some kind of agenda, I am a fan of the game, that is all.

From my seat which is not too far away from my computer i see a common speech here.

Lots of we plan do this and improve, lots of vague "improve"words tossed around but looks like very little has been done that what 1-2 people could do in a very short period of time.

They have an ultimate goal...hmm nice, more promises.

This interview did nothing to convince me of anything more than a few minor OBVIOUS changes that might improve UI but the game is still just a world to pvp in ,similar to Crowfall and many other games that are less than 1/2 half a game.

IMO they might have an honest heart to improve the game, but to get it to where i would want to play it,seems like 5+ years.

So i'll wait and put this on the shelf for at least a couple years and see if it has improved much. The world lacked LIFE,npc's active rustle and bustle of lively towns/forts/villages.To me it looked more like an empty post apocalypse world.

The big picture problem, one i have eluded to since forever. As long as the main focus is pvp, simply closing the gap is NOT good enough. You cannot have an immersive FULL game with pvp because no matter what YOU want to do ,pvp will always be in the way.

@Wizardry You can check out the patch notes for the entire beta if you like, the team did a lot of fine work. They are also moving the game away from being completely focused on pvp, and that has already happened. The new alignment system has made a lot of people follow the "law" and they don't just kill or steal on sight. There are friendly clans and lots of people like to go farming together or explore the seas.

I'm not sure when you played but Rise of Agon does have villages and neighbors tend to get to know one another, for good or for ill. If you have any questions please feel free to ask :)

JUST WOW...good thing this website was purchased, nothing works properly and has been since day 1,must have got one helluva deal on this site.

The site can't determine sentence lengths, can't properly allocate spaces between paragraphs, often makes sentences and paragraphs too thin making posts 5x longer, just a total mess.
Nobody seems to be fixing it either, idk what has it been more than a year now, close to two years?

If you are talking about MMORPG.com you must be using Microsoft Edge that makes the boxes a bit odd. Try Firefox or Google Chrome on some sites.

well some of us do not have a lot to say about the plethora of WoW clones that have come and gone as we check this site from time to time.
But it was a great post IMO and hit very close to home with me as an old DF fan.
    Looking forward to launch!!!

Dude, did you read the page or just look at the prices?  The $20 is for the Tester pack to play in beta.  After launch, it's $4.95 per month.  That's it.  That's all it costs to play.  $4.95 per month.

Actually that is to be in the testing which ends this 24th of april. The subscription after testing should be 4.95 until release which if I remember correctly comes out to 9.99, but I could be wrong. Also the tester package comes with this.

Great interview! I started playing Dark fall back in 2008, beta testing the Original game. It genuinely is a one of a kind game, & for me, there will more than likely NEVER be a gaming experience that comes close to it..

That being said, DF had many many flaws. The BIGGEST flaw, however, was it's owner/company:Aventurine. They were nothing but a CANCER to Dark falls success..at least 5-10000 players that loved the game && would have stuck around, left the game after months, nearly a year of literally NO communication from the Dev's.. The community asked for just some communication, which they couldn't deliver.. making many people quit.

YES; there were many more flaws.. and yes, BPG has truly eliminated a vast majority of them, & has worked very hard making the New Player Experience and Quality of Life much better...

A previous poster said the game felt stale&empty.. & that was probably true, the population got very low at times, which made it feel like a ghost world..

BUT with just a bit of population the game feels the exact opposite, & it creates an environment every type of gamer can enjoy!

To anyone who has written the game off due to the precious iterations... all I ask is you invest the 9.99$ to give the game 1 months chance...the more that do so, the better experience you shall have.

LAUNCH of Darkfall ROA, is something you do not want to miss out on.

Give it a shot and for 75% of you, you will at the very least have the gaming experience of a life time for at least 1 year.

The game will only get better folks.. but the place the game is at today, is AMAZING, I can say that being a vet, when the game should be stale to me etc.. anyone who has not spent much time in DF, everything will be new content to you and you will see why us long term vets try so hard to get people like you to try the game out!!

See you in Agon, my friends :)

PS: The community is not the cancerous shitpile it once was. We have had DF taken from us once before, we now are doing everything we can to ensure the game's around for much longer..

lol to whoever thinks a game fails with or without skill caps.

I would consider myself a pretty normal mmoprg player.

And skill caps has absolutely no reason whatsoever on why I did not play Darkfall.

It was a piece of dog doo for many many reasons; far too many for me to list.

It may not deter you, but if a game has skill caps when I go into it, I at least know that I will be able to catch up to the vets at some point. UO had it right. Just so you are aware, I'm not saying they didn't mismanage the game. I'm just saying that this is one of many design choices that just simply doesn't work with this type of game if you want to continue to bring in new players.

I personally couldn't get into it because I had to pre-load spells on top of casting them. That was by far, the most annoying mechanic in the game for me, and I just couldn't keep playing. New players expect their games to respond quickly to what they do, and having two mouse clicks when there should only be one was outright pathetic as far as design goes.

I do really think though, unless they are just targetting vets and returning players, it's going to be tough to attract new players with 2005 graphics.

    preload spells?

there is a casting bar and you can hold a spell..

there is no preloading going in darkfall

"... fostering a positive and supportive community ..." Good luck with that in an open-world pvp game.

Because 95% of the time, those types of games only attract anarchistic self-serving players. Which ultimately pushes away new players on a daily basis and leads back to a big reason DFO failed in the first place.
  • DAS1337DAS1337 Member Posts: 2,537 Uncommon
What do you call it then, when you need to select a spell first before you cast it?  I call it pre-loading a spell.  I played the game.  I know how it works.  In games today, (unless it's a console port) you only need to press a hotkey associated with the spell(usually loaded into a hotbar), and the spell/ability fires immediately.

Now, perhaps something changed, but the last time I played Darkfall, you had to load the spell with a button press, THEN use another button press to cast it.  That is inefficient.  As far as holding a spell and releasing it, that isn't what I was talking about.

Everquest 1 was like that too you had 8 gems and you had to open the spellbook and then decide from your spells which 8 to load.  It made it more strategic and if you're in a  dungeon you could not choose spells on the fly if they were not already memorized. I thought it was an excellent idea as it lent thought, awareness and preparation to a caster's skill.
