Actually, Jita like Amarr is an active combat zone, very much so, there are alliances/corporations that wardec 10's if not 100's of corporations at a time, so that they can attack them in High Sec, and often in particular, in Jita/Amarr.
Its not uncommon for the attackers to stand off of the main trading stations with an MTU and just continously attack ships undocking, and thereby stripping their assets

High Sec, doesn't mean 'Safe' it just means that its 'safer', barring wardecs of course. Oddly enough, for the most part, nullsec is safer if your under a wardec than High Sec is.

But one thing for sure, Jita is not a combat free zone, quite the contrary.
I did not say Jita is a combat free zone.

I did not say  High Sec is safe.

EVE is a PvP game. Everywhere.

But almost all database traffic in Jita is trade related. Anything that happened in Jita is small scale warfare compared to the large fleet battles. Many of the Jita kills are suicide gank squads and their victims.

The largest thing that happened in Jita was the "Disco War" protest against CCP, where we were all shooting coloured lasers at the monument  (which is now officially "shattered" because of that). Thousands of players. That crashed Jita several times and pissed off the mods to no end (thats why they send some of us into limbo, out of Jita). But in the end CCP recognized that "Thou shall not piss off thy most dedicated players!"

    Have fun

How many players should be on a single server with 2016 technology?

    All of them.

Especially since EVE has been doing it since 2003.  Boom.

    Exactly.
As a 12 year EVE player let me clarify:

EVE is a single shard, not a single server. And even that was not true, as the Chinese had their own shard. EVE consists of many different hardware servers (sent by IBM to CCP for special use) that together form the EVE universe. Every server has between 1 and approx. 20 systems. For higher loads there is the Jita server and dedicated battle servers (the later should be ordered/reserved in advance if possible  - most battles are planned).
Server/Shard.  Potayto/potahto.  These terms are interchangeable in the MMO universe.  No one asks someone which "shard" they're playing on in WoW unless they're an insufferable prick.

Most players know that if you're playing on Tranquility, then you're playing on a server farm. Those that don't, also don't care, so this discussion isn't for them.

Not only is EVE multiple servers, but they're also running 4 ESXi nodes with an, as yet, unspecified amount of virtual servers.  So now they have access to snapshots, vmotion, dynamic load balancing, VMNIC's... all the kinds of goodies that I get to use every day at work.

This shit's so advanced that 99% of other MMO's aren't worth licking CCP's muddy boots when it comes to server technology.

EVE has crashed all the time since 2003 when too many people came together in one system. Usually the group jumping in died - they watched black screens, while the defenders saw their ships appearing on grid and killed them.
Too many heavy trucks on a bridge and it will collapse.  Too much cargo in an airplane and it won't get off the ground.  Too much Goat Simulator and you may start eating out of your trash bin.  Too much of anything is bad.  Got it.

Only since adding time dilation and dedicated battle servers (which you should tell to CCP in advance, so they can fire em up) can any large scale battle occur on equal terms for both sides.  Still, anything above 1000 players in one place still means trouble (and can still kill the grid). Thats why large scale engagements spill over to neighbouring systems and supply routes (allowing to split the battle participants over several servers).   Jita is a special server with a limit of roughly 2500 (but only because most activity in Jita is station trading and not combat).
Time dilation was introduced in 2011, so roughly 1/3rd the time that EVE has been around.  More than 1000 players in one spot in an MMO constitutes ground breaking records in the industry.  Not entirely sure why you're trying to downplay these significant accomplishments.  Probably because SC won't come remotely close to those records for a long time, if ever.  Spin that doctor round and round, round and round, round and round!

    Coming back to Star Citizen:
Time dilation may work for EVE, but won't really work for Star Citizen.
    Yes.  We know.

    So .. in summary ....
no ... not all of the players can be on a single server with 2016 technology. That includes EVE Online.

I covered this earlier.  It's a matter of semantics.  The vast majority of gamers call shards "servers".  This is due 100% to the fact that early MMO's were actually instanced across single hardware servers.  The lexicon doesn't change nearly as fast as the technology does.  Don't be insufferable.

    Having a blast!

I wonder how long before CIG announce they are moving to a new engine?

Happens with many delayed games... TF2, DNF, Daikatana

In the end it's whatever the tech allows.  The better the graphics and art assets, the lower the number will be.  16 or 24 in an instance is probably fine for most cases.  But it will limit the ability to have massive battles.

Early on, didn't they proclaim 50-100 though?   Depending on how it plays out, there will be issues if they can't get more people in an instance.   Only scouting type affairs, no massive battles if the realistic player number is hovering around 16.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

I believe it was promised 100 per instance so you could do 50 vs 50.
