Commander reports:
"It's unclear at this point whether the "Organic Structures" grow back, but they can be mined.
So far, I and other commanders have collected Iron, Sulfur, Arsenic, Germanium, Manganese, Tungsten, and Arsenic.
If the structures DO grow back, then these are material mines.
The central structure appears to be impervious to damage. I've watched commanders whack it with every kind of weapon there is, railguns included.
As I type this, I can hear weapons fire. If this does end in war, then we clearly started it.
UPDATE
The peripheral spires periodically grow back. I witnessed this happen. This sites are a gold mine in materials. They seem to be a nigh-infinite source of materials like germanium and arsenic.
Update 2
Occasionally these spires contain "Mining Fragments" when which picked up by an SRV transform into "Meta-Alloys" which look extremely valuable.
Update 3
When the peripheral spires are destroyed the materials they drop are shaped like this:
Update 4
Someone just dropped an unknown artifact. So far, there is no effect.
I've never witnessed a UA before. So it appears to be pointing at merope. Am told this behavior is normal.
Update 5
The UA's health does not appear to be dropping.
Update 6
A CMDR dropped a UA directly on the barnacle. No effect. UA decayed as normal. We have now ceased fire and retreated to see if we can encourage it to regrow its spires again.
Update 7
Can confirm that barnacle exists in both solo and open mode."
Commanders are working on sound analysis and binary decoding of the sounds.
If this was a first contact, we humans blew it ;-)

Sandbox universes, free walking avatars, player trade, many available spaceships, planetary exploration, aliens etc.
They have a different approach in how to realize that vision. One does it sequentially and hard-sci-fi realistically, the other recapitulatory and cinematically.
Being a backer for both projects i enjoy both games and visions and look forward to compare the final games in a few years.

The barnacle reminds me of the obelisk in Space Odyssey 2001.
The Elite universe so far has only one confirmed alien race, the Thargoids (insectoid alien race).
So finding a second one is big news.
E:D does not hand out clues easily. You have to work hard and together with other players to decipher the clues. And yes, that may require knowledge in basic cryptology and signal processing.
Only artifacts hinting at the existance of other alien races (now extinct ? Killed by the Thargoids ?) have been found. As an example - read up on the "Unknown Artifacts" mystery:
