Awww, I wasn't a frequent visitor over there, but it saddens me to hear about their shutdown.

Those guys were incredibly supportive of the City of Heroes community when NCSoft decided to kill off the game. Probably ironic that they are now suffering a similar fate.

    Goodbye Massively. :(

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

Feel free to send me a message if you want a guest pass to try Black Desert Online as well!

I am afraid that lots of the refugees will make an account, see some article such as "Are ESO subs going to plummet?" (mind you, ARTICLES - not random threads), facepalm and delete account image.

PS I wish welcome to any of those folks including even trolls (they can be funny sometimes), also have in mind that, with some luck, Massively will re-appear soon.

I don't expect the forums to improve after all this is the internet and who can expect civility, intelligence, logic or reason on the internet. But,  I doubt taking in any forum members could make these forums worse.  Like it or not MMORPG.COM has for at least the last 10 years had a solid reputation as the cesspool of all MMO forums.  The great melting pot where everyone who hates MMOs gathers to complain, whine and attack  anyone who disagrees with them.   There are no forums more negative.  That being said there is something very attractive about these forums.  Maybe its just seeing trends, seeing what myths people believe in and of course seeing the common man naked in all his ignorance.

I am sad to see Massively go away.  It is a blow to MMOs.

The only ban in my history I find noteworthy was when Age of Wushu got a new feature where you could gank players and neuter them.

Back then I said that if you feel the need to cut another man's pride off then you are probably a latent homosexual in denial and feel really upset and angry about it.

That was and still is my honest opinion but I think I hit a lot of nerves back then lol

But "early access", in the form of "paid alpha test", is a scam. :/ The rest is true, though! :)

I just want to know, now that Massively is shut down, what other site is Narriusseldon gonna use to back up his endless crusade to change the meaning of the terms that we use to define a genre.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

As long as the devs are very clear about the fact that you are paying for a completely unfinished alpha game - I don't see how it's a scam.

If I stand on the street corner and sell an empty brown paper bag for $50 that is clearly marked as an empty bag, nothing inside of it - and tell people very clearly that it's just an empty bag - it's not a scam.

In most cases the issue with EA games is players are willing to throw money at anything.

Because, as I've said before in other threads, alpha testing, by classic definition, is a paid, in-house position, not the "buyer beware" thing indie devs have made it. It's like someone got this idea one day to make people pay for half- or even quarter-finished games and said, "We'll call it alpha! YA! Early access! Everyone wants to be a playtester!". So you have all these people, soaked of cash, running around with this strange thought in their heads they're suddenly educated in such a manner, because opinion and payment are education, to be able to contribute to making a "better game". It's rubbish and I scoff at the idea. You can have your opinion "it's neat" or even "great", but you've been duped. Don't call me a troll, it's honestly how I see it.

They're selling promises with no recourse for failure. "But the disclaimer...". Screw that disclaimer. It's a scam.

Welcome to the fold, Earthlings.  Please stay a while, and listen.

  • Really it's just a bunch more people with differing opinions coming on board. That means people that like and don't like what you have to say.

There's going to be a whole lot less ability to ban the folks who disagree with what you say I think. Right now certain folks who write for certain companies are able to report and ban someone.

With that many new voices I think their reporting power will hopefully be dampened.

I think posters should be more concerned by why Massively closed. If their ad revenue could not support them, you have to ask why, it had for eight years. AOL has MMOs in its stable, but did not want to run a online MMO magazine, again why?

Now there are those among us who think that everything is wonderful in MMO-land, but we have Blizzard cancelling major projects, we have studios shutting down and MMO websites shutting down.

The industry has become one of short term gain with casino, easymode MMOs. It does not have the sustainability, even the surety of return that it had five years ago. But it does still make a lot of money, this is blinding people to the issues it has.

Bill talking about massively in MMOFTW said "the genre may be in the weird place right now" as a gaming journalist, that's about all you are going to say.

The industry has problems, MMOs take more investment and time to make than solo games, but players do not want to play them any longer than they do a solo game. The industry drove this change with everything from easymode to cash shops. They only have themselves to blame.

I guess there is a way to tie it all back to 'MMOs are too easy nowadays! Back in my days we walked up hill, in the snow, both ways!'

It shows what PvP games are really all about, and no, it's not about more realism and immersion. It's about cowards hiding behind a screen to they can bully other defenseless players without any risk of direct retaliation like there would be if they acted like asshats in "real life". -Jean-Luc_Picard

Only big virtual world, old school MMOs take more investments. MOBAs, instanced based games like warframe, star conflict, and marvel heroes probably are no more expensive to produce than single player games with similar amount of content.

So this change actually put MMO in parity with solo games, in terms of costs, and with the added advantage that devs can make money if players treat them as solo games. So what is the problem?

    Hear ye hear ye...

I am personally looking forward to a influx of new bridge dwellers and internet comedians. Will make things a bit more livley. =)

As for the future of MMORPG... i am not worried.

As far as i read it the thing was not as much ´stick and massey not pulling their weight as they where the ones pulling the smallest cart and when something have to be cut.. you cut that what is a the least of a loss. In this case two venerable but in some ways outdated gaming communities. After all why bother paying for what you can get for free.

That's why modern MMOs are so mediocre Nari, it is not a cause for celebration. But what I think many do not see is that the direction is ever smaller, more casino. This design path has not come to a end by any means.

Meanwhile, the kids born ten years later that you chaps are playing their phone aps and laughing about the raw emotion folks on this site put into the constructing shrines to buggy-whips from the past.

For New Gamers, sites like Massively and this one are dreary places to read. Out of touch.

I personally wonder how much longer until this site gets re-branded to cover modern gaming. So different from 2000.
