Chaos Interactive has unveiled the first details of its upcoming sci-fi MMO, Seldon Crisis. The game's principle writer, Riccardo Simone, has loosely based Seldon Crisis's story on the works of Isaac Asminov.

Seldon Crisis is a completely player-driven MMO. The game's economy, politics and even the infrastructure will be in the hands of the players who are not bound by preset paths and forced linear progression. Players can earn money and increase their character level by crafting and trading goods between the many sectors of the galaxy and its stations, hunting pirates and collecting loot and bounty, or fighting other players for their equipment and cargo.

In Seldon Crisis, players also will discover an extensive variety of missions, such as combat, escort, courier and exploration, with various combinations of each. Factions in each sector - hostile, friendly or neutral - offer work for adventurous captains while the vast depths of space offer hidden missions and uncharted territories to discover.

Ok call me shallow but they really need to change the name of this game.

I'm pretty sure that's not how they spell the characters name in the Big Bang Theory, and wouldn't his crisis be weather someone touched his food or was sitting in his spot? :)

Could it be? An EVE Online with most of its features and better leveling/combat?

I've wanted to play EVE for many many years, but the leveling system pushes me away more than anything. Something about not playing the MMO that I want to be playing.

( I understand you can still play while you wait, but there is that feeling that it is IMPOSSIBLE for you to ever catch up)

To be honest though. This MMO looks pretty good. A lot of information on their website.

That wasn't much of a reveal.
Brad McQuaid Quote:  So, God-willing, the Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen team and I will be able to make or allow that magic to happen a third time, and it too will be not just a great game, but also that catalyst again that brings people together, sometimes out of their comfort zone, learning how to work together not just tactically in a virtual world but also socially in the real world.

Unless they have already received permission from Asimov's estate, they are just asking to be taken to court.  They are not even bothering to file off the serial numbers and are lifting things wholesale from the Foundation series.

    hurray, another scifi space simulator.

Why not make a smaller coop game and let the mmo environment rest for a a while... maybe a few years.

Wouldn't it be interesting if someone did something new and different with a space faring MMO, like, I dunno make it more well rounded and not just gankfest in space or Spreadsheet Wars!!!

I would like to give an opinion on this post, but if I agree I will offend people who disagree. While if I disagree my comment will be seen as inflammatory. Either way I will get banned by this site full of the most delicate flowers in online gaming. Ban people for giving honest opinions... beautiful. Unfortunately I still like the articles.

That's the 1st thing I thought. The writer's short story was based on the Foundation series so presumably permissions were granted but the 'Seldon Crisis' is the heart of every predictive crisis happening throughout the series (not counting the Mule, ha ha).

They are doing a lot more than loosely basing it at any rate.

There is a precedent for Asimov's estate taking an interest in such things.

The novel Psychohistorical Crisis by Donald Kingsbury for example was essentially meant to be a sequel to the Foundation series set in the time of the Second Empire, but permission was denied by Asimov's estate so the names had to all be changed though anyone familiar with the Foundation series could easily identify which names corresponded to the originals.

From the dev forums, it seems this game and its story is being argued as being a "derivative work", so it seems they did not get Asimov's estate's permission.  Still seems risky as a court battle (whatever the outcome) could rapidly eat up $ and time.

Hari Seldon has nothing to do with Sheldon Cooper.
