Zenimax just cut 300 customer service jobs for ESO in EU 4 months early

Nowhere does it say ESO in the article. Nice one OP... More than slightly misleading. Zenimax owns a lot of companies.

Just incase you are looking for a job other than making misleading threads, Zenimax is hiring for another 100+ Positions

After thinking about this a sec.  Wow 300 people in just EU alone that was a crap ton of CS jobs, well no that just what they let go.  Wow that had HIGH HIGH hopes for this game.  I know they were contract workers but still , very interesting indeed.

Really?  really?!?  Ok so no it doesn't but lets see hmmm Zenimax specifically is doing ESO right now.  And they were in customer service which would mean they are supporting a customer base for hmm a game or some such thing.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like these workers were hired for ESO.  The article states they were hired over the last two months, which corresponds to the launch of ESO on April 4th.

It is pretty hard to escape the conclusion that ESO did not have the sales necessary to pay their wages.

How many online games does Zenimax currently have in their portfolio?

Care to calculate, based on the size of each of these games what percentage would equate to ESO?

I will give you a hint...they have 1 game currently so that would be 100% of the losses associated with ESO.

So not in the slightest misleading except to ignorant fanboys unwilling to read the facts.

Pure coincidence they employed roughly the same number of CS staff when ESO released then? Nothing to do with ESO right?

This wasn't bethesda, they're in Bethesda, MD. This was a ZOS office in the EU, it's like citing Dice employees being still there.. in defense because bioware employees were let go.

It basically shows demand wasn't high for as long as they thought it would be (6 months). The typical gestation period for an MMO communities logistical numbers going forward.

It's the EU gamers fault.  They didn't give the game a fair chance and now not enough subs to cover pay checks.

There are no EU gamers yet as there is no EU server. It isn't hard to work out why the game didn't do as expected when they fail to do something as obvious as put the EU server in the EU.

Let's assume that this is ESO. I don't think this is entirely unexpected. SWTOR had the same type of thing going on and the same doom and gloom when they started axing jobs just a few months after release.

It was said that 200 of these people were on 2-6 week contracts. Is this 200 of the 300 or is that 200 on top of the 300? Anyway, the remainder were on 6-month contracts. Don't get me wrong, it sucks that they cut these jobs, but my take is that they knew they were going to be swamped after launch, beefed up their support staff and then cut it down as soon as they were no longer needed. The fact they did it abruptly sucks, but isn't uncommon at all for tech companies. At least they haven't let go of any full-time staff at the moment.

I'd much rather have them hire people locally then outsourcing. I mean at least the money is going into the local economies and not overseas. In most cases (SWTOR included) they will usually launch with an outsourced support staff simply because they are cheaper and they can axe them whenever they want. Plus, since it's not local jobs being lost, it's not headline news. Sorry, but if you take a 6-week contract, do you think that you're going to be set for life?

On the other hand if EU players were not treated as second class citizens... No EU server (let's be honest about it), bugs, lag (also let's be honest about it - distance does matter). Even badly organised aminatnances in April (when the most players were checking out TESO).

EU gamers are on US servers, which doesn't mean these people were not hired to give them support. It may be entirely possibly they were wired on to support a possible EU server, that will not happen now though. WHo knows, no reason to speculate when the facts will show themselves soon enough.

And please stop using the term "fanbois" it's unbecoming of a rational poster.

My point still stands. It isn't hard to see why the game is failing when you have been following the game for a long time and can point out things like this.

And I like to throw the odd Fanboy reference in there from time to time, it allows me to laugh at the forum mods and the blinkered posters all in one shot.

Crystal clear from that press article that the positions were known to be temporary when they first appeared, which means they were intended to handle the launch period rush. That rush is now over, so the short-term contracts are terminated. What's so amazing about that ?

I think people are pointing out that the contracts were cut short (e.g. contracted for 6 months and told en mass to hit the bricks after 3), which is a major point of the article. Maybe this was planned, maybe not.

Also, the article says ZOS cut CS staff from 400 to 100. I hope next major update isn't as buggy as Crag was, or good luck getting timely CS responses.

As an aside, this is fairly dickish behaviour as well:

“It’s a disgrace how workers were treated. If they showed up at 10.30pm for the night shift, they were being told to go home at 11pm, that their jobs were gone,” he said.
