What about Gormak? forgive me for spoilers but in one of the story lines you help a gormak escape from voss and reach the stars. that would give a lore based reason for the gormak to be off world and able to train to become one of the various classes. Also it is rare but there are force sensitive gormak.
The only part of them that is non human is the head tails and skin color. The Cathar is a walking cat person. I consider that far more alien that someone with a different hair option and skin tone.
