[Column] WildStar: 5 Reasons You Should Play WildStar

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The most anticipated new MMORPG of 2014 is, without a doubt, Carbine Studios’ WildStar. The Elder Scrolls Online has had its time in the spotlight, bugs and all included, so now it’s time for that focus to shift to the new IP on the block. However, before the complete launch that will undoubtedly be full of server stability problems, balance issues, and complaints from the typical “I hate this game, yet I play it” players, let us bask in the glow of pre-launch hype just a bit longer.

I guess everyone has their own opinion and view when looking at a new mmo, cause personally I don't see those reasons as good and trying the game is best so sugarcoating it won't do it. Tried wild star and passing.

C.R.E.D.D.,housing, customization, those are all cool, but wont cut it, when the core gameplay is meh.

"The partially cartoon-style visuals offer enough individuality to stand out from the Guild Wars 2’s and Elder Scrolls’ of the world, while the aesthetics are different enough to not be labeled a WoW-clone, at least not out of the gate."

First of all, Guild Wars 2 and Elder Scrolls Online have completely different graphics from each other, if you have played them, you would know.

Second, the graphics in Wildstar are so similar to WoW that makes somebody wonder if they stole them from Blizzard. This is definitely a WoW-clone (in many more ways that just the graphics), like it or not.

And don't tell me that  "housing", something that WoW doesn't have, makes the game not a WoW-clone, yes it does have 3 different things from WoW, but that's it, it  has just 3 different things.

I'm skipping this game because of ArcheAge. It's simply the best MMO I've played since SWG.
  • cheyanecheyane Member LegendaryPosts: 9,101
The style is similar to WoW because the artist is the same but the game does not look like WoW at all. The races look totally different the world is different. I mean I can see why you might think that but its superficial you have to play the game to realise they are not the same but no point wasting my breath.

I'd play it if it wasn't an NCSoft product

Didn't read; don't care.  If you had named it 5 reason why I(the author) should play; I'd have read it.  You don't know me(the reader), therefor your unlikely to pull reasons out of your ___ why I should do anything.

So I saw the obvious flaws in the game, and the quests can get a little bland, though this is why I personally want it:

    First the bad:

Fairly bland quests to start of with.  Not a massive amount of replay value. I can't care less for housing, and only see it as a way to invest yourself in the game.

    The good:

    1)Pretty funny

2)Unique world, no skeletons/spiders/dwarves/elves/orcs or any of that fantasy overplayed junk. bleh

3)Better mobility, and action gameplay than Guild Wars

    4)Underwater battle, and play(pretty cool)

5)I for one find the comic style refreshing, and it is a obvious choice when making a mmo. I value graphics, and if it can look newer for longer, that is great.

6)The Trinity(Tank, DPS, and Heals, including hybrid ranks)

7)Level using content you want to level with(PVP, PVE etc. This is clearly a AAA game)

8)A lot of stuff I have not yet discovered in the game.

    9) The all important polish. Two months after release ESO is not as polished as Wildstar was three months ago in Beta.

    10) Pretty cool PVP, and Endgame PVP( I fear without Warplots in Group finder it will be as big a flop as Arenas in Guild Wars 2)

Glad I never played WOW, so this is new to me, sorta . There is so much to do in this game i'll for sure get my moneys worth. I honestly feel this game will rise a lot over the next two years, I just don't feel the hate floating around like I have with other AAA titles hype over the last few years. Good or bad thing ? I don't know. I just know y evil chua will be out there wrecking mofos.

Very nice article. I would agree with all the points made. But I would add a 6th .. Chua..

Thing is that like all games and all playtypes .. the game may not be for all. At first I was not sure about this. The game is what i would call Twitch gameing .. Twitch to get out of the way ... but it is not that bad. The telegraph system helps and you can tell when you have to move and when you can stay to get that last hit in. Combat is very smooth and engaging.

    Love the housing system

Houmor ... "Way to go Cupcake"...

This game has what I like .. Fun and enjoyment

And sure you can say WOW is more polished ... but so would I if I have almost 10 years of polish thrown at me ... but if you go back and recall launch of WOW ... Well that is another topic

People are quickly dismissing the fact that EVE has a never ending money sink with ships as when yours blows up is lose all the money you spent in building it or purchased it.  Not to mention that earning ISK is the content in EVE which is not the case in WS.  This key feature mechanic to any sort of game time sold for in-game currency is missing.  In WoW I have 100k gold that I just sit on and never spend it, WS I imagine will be much the same.  People will be selling ludarcous prices for the CREDD that it is going to make it unfeasible to get enough gold on a monthly basis.  A month here n there sure but nothing that you can do consistently.

And the payment model and options is hardly a reason to play the game.

Agree with your list - and I'm not taking the title personally either - who would have thought that?

Besides your 5 - I think it's fun and it's run and developed by professionals who are among the best in the industry.

With that in mind, the future looks bright for Wildstar.

We'll see what kind of damage the bots and gold farmers can do - the CREDD system is going to make for one battle of epic proportions as WS team fights them off.

For me, the day-to-day of Wildstar is just not fun. The questing pains me, running from hub to hub doing mindless tasks, following the arrow to the objective and then back to turn in. Sure, this is in all MMOs, but SWTOR and ESO distracted me from the mechanics in a way Wildstar (and, for that matter, WoW) don't, and don't even try to.

The challenges drove me crazy. If I didn't want to hang around and kill X mobs the game constantly bellowed "Challenge Failed". No, Wildstar, mindless grind declined would be the accurate description.

The path quests didn't offer an alternative to the main quest grind either, just an occasional different task to perform.

    3 of the 4 are marketing spin/redefining.

Telegraphed beams on the floor =/= action combat. It's all AoE combat all the time.

Player customization? Each class is allowed one weapon, forever.

c.r.e.e.d. is just another $$ to gold conversation system. Keep p2w out of my game please!

Therefore, I think the 5 reasons brought up here are not relevant if the fun criteria is not met first.

And to me thats where WS fails - it's just not fun *for me* - it could have the best features in the world and it still wouldn't make any difference.

All that matters is if  "I" have fun playing it. I have a blast in Wildstar and can't wait for launch. IMHO Combat is fun , Story is good, quests, crafting and art are all done well. It always makes me wonder why people go to other game forums to bad mouth games people are excited to play...if you don't like it , move on to something else.

The only reason to play wildstar is because of polished content and its atmosphere.

If you don't like the type of content, that's game breaking and polish doesn't matter.

If you don't like the atmosphere, that's game breaking and atmosphere doesn't matter.

I feel the author picked some random things and wrote this up. You could keep all of the things on the list and then change the unique atmosphere and change the content...giving a game less people will like.

The housing sold me on Wildstar.  They got my preorder money solely for that (but bonus that it's science fiction and not another fantasy MMO).  CREDD worries me.  If they screw with the ability of players like me to farm up our own gold to really enjoy our housing, I'll have to become a hater and unsub.  Hopefully my fears are groundless.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

5 reasons not to clicky on advertisement, you come back later

    5) 40 man raiding already proven not to work - about 2% will see it

    4) CREED = p2w

    3) telegraphs = playing the ui and not the game, although 'dps meter Joey' will love it

    2) warplots - most don't pvp

    1) housing - well ok, that's never been done before!

Most of the quests are turned in by pressing C. Are you sure you were playing Wildstar?

The challenges drove me crazy. If I didn't want to hang around and kill X mobs the game constantly bellowed "Challenge Failed". No, Wildstar, mindless grind declined would be the accurate description.

It's "mindless" yet you keep on failing it? Oops ;/

The path quests didn't offer an alternative to the main quest grind either, just an occasional different task to perform.

Well they were alternatives to the main quest. Depending on which path you choose, you get appropriate quests. You don't get exploration/jumping puzzle quests in the main quest grind... just like you don't get scientist/settler quests.

Are you sure you were playing Wildstar?

Anyway I've found it extremely fun... and I'm waiting for launch :)

The one thing I do not like is CREDD system.  I've been in beta, even bought the game already.  I'm just not having fun.  The questing is so boring.   Had I tried it before I bought it , I would not have purchased  :-(    It may be fun for some, but after the second day playing, I just don't care to log in .. that's a really bad sign for a new game!

Most anticipated?  I'd argue people are looking more forward to AA, based on reading MMO forums, including mmorpg.com.

    5. Your first sentence in this sections describes my experience in Wildstar Beta.

    4. "Wildstar promises a system" <--that.

    3. I felt like I was being funneled along as I played, but perhaps this opens up later in the game.  I did like the different classes (jobs) and that they had special missions, etc.

    2. Combat was a turn-off for me.  Good mechanics can get me into a game, and the combat felt old.  I had most recently played Final Fantasy's ARR and quit it after a month for the same reason.  The combat felt ver similar.  I did not feel challenged in the least, nor excited.

    1. I think the C.R.E.D.D. system is very interesting.  I'm wondering how smoothly it will run and how the details will be sorted.  Will we be reading posts by players who sold 5 hours of gametime, but the system took 10 or they can't log-in now or something.  How much data-tracking does this involve?  Auction houses and exchanges are always riddled with issues in the first year on M.M.O.R.P.G.'s.  If it works, I think this could become a great thing.

I was really excited about this game for a long, long time before it was a blip on forums.  I was disappointed.  I wish the company success, and I can see it taking off for some kids' first M.M.O.R.P.G. experience.  For me, it was more of the same.
