[Column] The Secret World: A TSW Wish List

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

While we continue to wait for the moment when we can get into Tokyo I thought I would take a bit of time to skip ahead and look at things that would in my mind take The Secret World from fantastic to out of this world. These are all things that would keep people playing or improve the quality of life and could possibly be implemented post Tokyo. So in no particular order here are seven things I’d like to see introduced to The Secret World.

One of the things i find funny about the chat system is that is was created as a Bare bones version of the Anarchy online chat system. They really should update it and just give us the AA chat system already.

    Because i can.

i asked for aliens in the beginning of the game but they where not very exited about it.

i love to see some grays and cropcircles and whatnot.

maybe they have to change the game direction to sci fi horror then?

First of all, great one image

    1. and 6. totally agree, a LotRO-like cosmetic system would be awesome for TSW.

    2. crop circles are made by trolling humans, everyone knows that :)

    3. /droool. Yep, housing would be huge. With lots of housing items. Sadly the Dreamworld is not a very good foundation for that, but I'd love housing in TSW. This one should be FC's top priority.

    4. we kicked their butts at the End of World (and once more later), but yep, not a bad idea. Maybe in form of some flashbacks like the other back-in-time session.

    5. would be great, but sadly, it's the engine again. AoC has the same hiccups with the chat.

    7. totally agree. Last time when a friend started with TSW and asked which faction should he choose, we listed and gathered every detail down to the last and smallest ones, and reached to the conclusion that the answer is a loud and clear "whatever". Which is, in a way, sad. I mean Loomies should be better by a mile than the other two, right? :)

(I wonder though, how long we need to wait for the first lame "fix the combat / animations" post, lol)

My only real wish list item for TSW is a better combat system :(.

I love TSW and I wished more people played it enough for them to make improvements to things. But I feel its more content driven just to keep the game afloat and that content comes sparingly.

Funcom need to get a break here and a helping hand. How much money do they need for them to get their shit together to make this a competitive contender in the MMO market?

  • DocBrodyDocBrody Member UncommonPosts: 1,926

    great list!!

huge +1 on player housing, aliens, mayan zone and more faction conflict outside of arenas.

more common conspiracies, JFK, Roswell, Area 51 etc would be cool

heck a Nevada Area 51 zone military type base would kick ass

    but again...... PLAYER HOUSING #1

and remember the buzz they created when they wanted to revamp the animation system for smoothness and feet on stairs positioned realistically? Never happened  :,-(

    1. Clothing Separates

I would love to see there are more important things for the development team to be working on, like Tokyo.

    2000x this!

    2. Aliens
i believe in the past they shyed away from ALIENS like area 51.
with all the bizzare things in this game-iam ok with that.

    3. Player Housing
I believe London has a hotel where you can purchase a key and enter a 'hotel' room aala 'blue velvet'...temporarily-wondered where this was going....

    4. A Mayan Zone

would be amazing!-but we can have tons of fun in pvp matches here as well.

    5. A New Chat System
Kinda liek it wher its at -puts me in check what game iam playing!

    6. Wardrobe Slots
    would be cool.

    7. More Faction Specific Content
Darn it did you loose your cell phone?- they call  us everythime we finish a mission or dungeon! well i believe tokyo will be bringing my faction DRAGON to a limelight!

i screamed with joy at work when i saw this!-lol n the photo!

would be nice to see future missions discovering or unsolving great theories...but so far theyve done such a great job on their own stories- why borrow from RL?

    great article! nice list!

dunno the whole train to cairo was very similar to this concept. cult=military..

theyve done so many out of the ballpark stories-cant wait to see what tokyo brings, and so far the reviews from test serves have not dissapoint!

Good list and I agree those additions would be a great improvement. Bylos has said there are going to be more frequent "side-story" missions available along side the upcoming expansion and they plan to do that more frequently.

I think Funcom's Dream engine has ended up hampering what kind of things they can do to improve their mmos. And the company is too small now to likely ever bring the Dream engine up to the same standards as other popular 3rd party game engines. I've often wondered if it's the game engine that makes the combat what it is.

I personally don't have a problem with the combat or animations but it's clear a lot of people do. Makes me wonder had TSW been made with the Unity engine or some other popular MMO engine - would the animations and combat be improved enough that those 2 complaints could be addressed? Unfortunately, we'll never know.

Playing Now: The Secret World, Guild Wars 2, Neverwinter

#1 on my wish list: The ability to run the game.

I started playing in January, and somewhere in the midst of Windows 8.1 updates, the game got to where it crashed all the time.  I fought with it for several weeks and worked with customer service extensively, and just couldn't get it working.  I finally set it aside and went on to playing other games.  My few short weeks intrigued me a lot.  I hope to get back there someday!

I have been wanting them to add Chernobyl into the game. It screams TSW setting like nothing else we have in this world.

I'm having the same issue on my laptop running Win 8.  Getting a message about memory.  I've got 8 gig on this thing, which is more than my desktop had.  I figured it might be the onboard video.  Either that or allocation is borked somehow.

Oh well, if they ever come out with housing, I'm sure I'll be motivated to find a fix.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

I agree with the entire list.

I'd especially like to see much more focus on the faction metagame.  Personally, I enjoyed the "Secret War" browser game they ran before the launch of the MMO.  Instead of Facebook, I'd like to see characters collect minions and implement a system similar to the STO duty officer system, but have them perform missions that have an impact on the factional control of the world.

Anyway, love the game as it is, but there's always room for improvement.

I dont think Aliens would fit on it, except if we are talking in aliens on a Lovecraftian way, not a X-Files way.

Housing would improve their gameplay hugely, trust me... I dont know if the system would let it happens, even instanced housing on apartments and hotels, but the possibility of buying stuff, missions to get some things to the housing (for example a cosmetic item at the end of a dungeon) would be fantastic.

They would profit ten times with cosmetics for housing AND there would be new missions olnly for cosmetics. People could even return to the game to make a few old missions that now would give cosmetic items for the house...

For 6.) There are addons that let you save outfits such as Valyrie's Fashionista:

No aliens, please! Vanilla aliens would severly detract from the Lovecraftian feel of the universe.

As for wardrobe I would like to be able to tie different outfits to different builds so I lazily can see which one of several similar builds I use with casual glance.

Agreed.  Personally, I like the combat in TSW.  It's a bit different from the norm, and I believe that's in a good way.

The skill deck system is awesome.

Clearly the MMORPG genre has fallen - into sewage.  When the features people want have nothing to do with gameplay and everything to do with fluff, I weep.  Why not just go play the SIMs or Barbie online if you just want to play dolls and doll house?  I surely don't get it.

My #1 wish for TSW *was* before I stopped playing and will never return, was that they focused on GROUP content - extending endgame, more endgame, more instances, more raids - to make the game worth playing longer and worth sticking with.  Instead Failcom kept taking 2 months to put out episodes with forgettable single player content that players would blast thru in a few hours.

TSW is a damn good game  - best single player content ever (even though MMORPGs should be about grouping, if you MUST have solo idiot mode TSW's is the best); awesome instances - boss focused, little to no trash - raid like challenges in elite versions; excellent character system with tons of freedom yet with trinity and roles to make grouping not suck.

The problem with having such ultra distinct and memorable solo leveling content is that, assuming you have a brain and a memory, it's not all that fun to do a 2nd time.  Plus you don't really need alts when you can do everything with one character.

So what TSW REALLY needed (needs for people new to it and trying to stick with it) is more content you can do for long periods of time to keep you interested in the game - and that's endgame content - group-based content that takes longer than a few hours to fully exhaust, like the solo episodes they put out.

All that useless single player content would get people to return to the game (maybe) for a couple days, if that.  It did and does nothing for the longevity or lasting appeal of the game.  Adding more ways to play Barbie with your avatar or housing aren't going to do squat for the game either.

Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

Review their combat animation... This is the only reason why I stopped playing the game after I finished the story.
