Well Screw You Funcom

RaysheRayshe London, ONPosts: 1,284Member

So last night i updated my TSW with the new patch, and guess what was added. Lock Boxes. Now people on this site know i have been a large defender of funcom and TSW since the game was released, This is the last straw. For those who don't know, Myself and a large group of other players were promised by the dev team that lockboxes would never enter the picture of TSW. However in the last patch Mystery Boxes were added that can only be purchased with real money.

So in short, Screw You Funcom. From a long time defender of TSW.

Because i can.

Yep, it definitely raised an eyebrow of mine when I saw your name next to the thread title...

I haven't played TSW in about a week, will check it in the evening. Lootboxes, lockboxes and any other gambling crap are on my "naughty" list since years. If it's the newest method of the Filth to corrupt our world, I'll be a very sad Anima user. And if it's in any other form... that's not really possible, since they stated there won't be any similar lottery or gamble mechanic implemented just for the income increase.

Thx for the info. It's not a happy news, but I'll check it as soon as I can. Funcom, I hope it's just some misunderstanding...

  • Po_ggPo_gg Twigwarren, WestfarthingPosts: 2,714Member Uncommon

    Seems it's not a misunderstanding... /sad panda

(slightly) good news, while it's on the launcher I haven't seen any official announcement yet, the forum is buzzed but no gm's either.

(even more slightly) good news, no exclusive drops in the box.

the bad one, it's maybe the most blatant implementation I've seen (and I was in a truckload of games...). Not even behind some in-game mechanics, looting, trading away, etc., just the pure gamble. Open the store, purchase the box, get some loot. And while there's no exclusive items on the loot table (like for example STO's lockbox-only ships), the rewards are pretty good.

the worse, there's an epic box too... in other games it's pretty much a standard that a key to the box is around $1. Well, TSW's über-epic box is $4 / 4 Euro (which is close to $5). It can contain an epic signet or an epic augment. I can't even comment on that...

Joel, I hope you will reflect on this issue... you said this, concerning the lockboxes in Cryptic's games:

Doesn't matter, FC is probably going down anyway, behind all of the insider trading stuff, and their stock price that is going to crater because of it.

    :)

Never held myself a fanboi, just like their games (both the single and the online ones). And I've raised voice against Dreamfall's action combat sequences, AoC's first implementation of f2p and the whole Grindslayer, and haven't really supported TSW's b2p switch. But still, their games are great - at least for me.

I seriously think this change will harm the game, so it's natural to send them my objections. (before you ask, yep, in mail as well, not just in a forum post :) )

    I'm with you OP.

Funcom just seems to habitually fuck up all their MMOs. Some way or another they will ruin a key aspect. I was already forcing myself to stomach the awful shitstorm combat in TSW to enjoy the story and now theyre intruding on that too... meh... done with it.

should see Age of Conan's cash shop lol... can just buy all your gear. Funcom is now dead to me.. forever.

Oh wow, that is really bad news... =/

And it's "Asian MMO" style boxes from the contents you described there, not SWTOR and STO's cosmetic stuff...

A system that's incredibly unpopular on the western market, I can't imagine what they were thinking.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

Well, they went back on a direct promise of no lock boxes ever and here they are. I admit that I consider them a bane of the free to play game lines. Frankly, they totally ruined Star Trek Online and would clutter the space map so bad when they were testing drop rates that you couldn't see your enemies in an STF run. It is not a good move on their part even if I have to acknowledge that they need some sort of additional income to keep the game running and maybe even growing. STO would not have survived without them as much as I hate what the boxes did to the game and integrity of play value. There simply has to be a better way and amidst all the other junk going on I hope they find it. TSW is a niche game but a good niche game and it deserves better than being taken over by some one like PWI.

I dont think Funcom cares about there "promises" they had made players. They need all the money they can get to get out of there legal trouble lol.

I def see within 2years the games run by Funcom TSW & Age of Conan atlest sold off to a company like Trion.

The lockboxes in both those games have more than cosmetics. The TOR boxes contain rare and extremely valuable (on the GTM) vehicles and are the only vehicles that scale with speeder skill among other useful items. The STO lockboxes contain all sorts of useful things from DOffs to ships. People don't spend mass on lockboxes for some cosmetics.

I'm not a huge fan of lockboxes either. I would rather just purchase items in a cash shop for a flat fee if they're going to be in there. I find it surprising that they are as popular as they are.

NO, no, no, no, no. Anyone other than PWI they are the worst company out there when it comes to the cash shop nowadays. they throw everything they can in there. if TSW ever got taken over by PWI the playerbase it has left would leave. Not to mention PWI couldnt tell a story if their lives depended on it. STO is not a story driven game, Sadly to say TSW needs to stay with Funcom or crash. Cause no one could keep up with the story that funcom put out. No One.

Same with Neverwinter's and CO's boxes. In the other PWE (non-Cryptic) games too, rare crafting mats, mounts, etc.

In LotRO the same, steeds, consumables, tomes, etc - still, maybe because of the community its effect isn't that widespreaded like the previously mentioned games.

And maybe that's the key to the popularity as well. These boxes could remain niche, non-significant items in the game, if the players wouldn't buy them. In LotRO most folks just trashing them as soon as it drops - probably because of the more mature average age, or by not craving the items in it, I dunno.

In the other games keys are maybe the most active sells sadly. I know players who spent hundreds in a year  just on keys... Many people loves gambling, and they're gladly paying for the thrill of it. Personally, I just don't think it's ethical to take their money in a game which is not dedicated for that activity. (if they go into a casino, it's obvious that they want to gamble. If they launch a game, their plan is not the gambling, it's playing the given game)

PWI knows how to introduce lots of new features that require tons of grinding of old content for goodies you really do not need in order to keep people playing and buying into each generation of lock box. Power creep becomes such an issue that the game play becomes dumbed down. Everything they do is counter productive to a story based game like TSW but they are one of the few companies with the needed capitol and desire to expand in this market that could acquire a company like Funcom. Nexon is another possibility. As I remember EA considered acquiring Funcom before TSW made release but the game did not perform up to the needed expectations for the deal to come to pass.  I am not sure where they would stand now.

Regretfully I am with you Rayshe. I think I would rather see TSW die than be ruined by a company with no idea as how to handle such a story centric niche game and a quality one at that. I hate writing that as it deserves to live.

So what happens if you just don't buy keys to open them ?

I have mixed feelings about it.

I totally respect the opinion of whoever hate it, it's legit.

On the other hand i don't really get the fear of fighting people earning stuff in different way (as long as they are the same and not better then the one u get in game)

you say you earned it "playing" the person buying it earned it with money he earned working perhaps he doesn't have time to play 24/7 like some nerd on here just saying...

Personally i always though there should be server not divided in PVE/PVP those are bullshit but server divided by Casual players and Nerds in the Nerds server people shouldn't be allow to buy stuff with money in the Casual one, yes... why not! if the game "farming" is based on Nerds a casual player will never see end-game so i think is legit to buy his way there if he feels like

but on TSW there is only one server (that is a great thing, I love it) and make it more complicated.

I am 10.4.4 with 4 set all 10.4.4 and all purple signet in all of them and i farmed 20% of the augment wheel all the one i need already (i dont pve so i dont get 10.5.5 all my gear are venice gear the only farm i have done is signet farm because i can solo it at the airport/cave/cemetery and augment farm mostly farming signet and buying the augment in the market)

N.7 in stonehenge ranking (i hate ED)

    https://chronicle.thesecretworld.com/leaderboard#global/1/2000497/pvp/minigames/stonehenge

anyway I dont feel threatened if more people get to endgame faster then i did (it actually could be more fun!) it's their choise so personally i dont care if people is willing to spend 400$ in box to get full geared those 400$ will found the improvment of the game i am playing (hopefully)

better that way then them buying gold in some outside site (money that don't go to funcom) and then try to get all purple through the market.

As i said Legit complain but i don't buy into it. The more money funcom get the better the game will progress i guess locking people out top gear unless they are farmers or play 8h a day = game dieing sooner then later

Hopefully that will be the case. I've never bought anything that would support the lockbox scam in any games I play. Ok, I admit honestly, on a few occasions I strongly had to fight back the urge when I saw a D'Kora on the Exchange, but I'm tough (or just stupid...) and I avoided to support the lockboxer :)  (D'Kora is a great ferengi vessel in STO, which is lockbox-only)

If many players avoiding to purchase the boxes, then the ball goes back to the devs. They can either push it further (Turbine tried that too, luckily without much result), or just leave it as it is. They will still get some extra income from it, since a few folks will buy them, a few always does.

Not sure if the previous posters made this clear: the boxes are not world drops which need keys from cash shop (or with a negligible chance to obtain as world drops) to open as in LOTRO, Aion, GW2, Tera, &c.; the boxes themselves are direct cash shop purchases.

Thus on an extremely tight definition of the term the things are not "lockboxes." Doesn't mean I'm particularly happy about their addition, though. Particularly after in an earlier thread I'd argued that nothing in the cash shop as it stood prior to this made the game "pay to win" in any reasonable meaning of that term.

EDIT: oops, left out a vital negation sign in the last sentence.

I'm not logged in, so just out of memory: money, AP boost, signets, augments, black bullions, so pretty much only stuff that's good and worthy. No cosmetics, pets, or similar stuff which would maybe more acceptable...

And there's 2 boxes, the epic one is much more expensive, and it can give (with a slight chance I guess) epic signets and augments, or it gives the above instead, just more (so more money, more black bullions, etc.).

I don't buy lock boxes or keys but I have no issue buying what comes out of them with in game money.

Games don't run on promises, good intentions or cheese... if someone wants to spend a pile of money on lockboxes go for it. If I can earn that same item just by playing, then the company wins, the lockbox guys win and I win. We all get what we want.

It's nice to say a company should only sell hats but when you're not paying your bills because people don't buy enough hats, you have to start looking for other things people will buy. It's all wonderful for a gamer to say just shut the game down and keep your " integrity " but it's not just a game to them is it ? I'm not so sure I'd want my company to just shut my job down instead of selling something I don't like.

Two types. The cheaper one (160 points) contains one green rarity item and one green or blue rarity item. The "Deeper Mystery Box" (480 points) contain two green rarity items and one blue or purple rarity item. Drop research is currently ongoing; some preliminary reports were posted in a thread on the TSW forums which got locked after it degenerated into flaming and name-calling (well, to be fair, it pretty much started out as flaming and name-calling).

Green rarity items can be any one of:

    • 1 green rarity signet
    • 1 green rarity Augment Resonator
    • 3 Black Bullion (token currency normally gained from running hardmode dungeons)
    • 10 Black Marks of Venice (token currency normally gained from PvP)
    • 10 Credits of Ca d'Oro (token currency normally gained from solo PvE content)
    • 5 Pure Anima - Max Health (consumable)
    • 300,000 Pax Romana (the main ingame currency)
Blue rarity items can be any one of:
    • 1 blue rarity signet
    • 1 blue rarity Augment Resonator
    • 9 Black Bullion
    • 30 Black Marks of Venice
    • 1,000,000 Pax Romana
    • 1 x 50AP injection
    • 1 x 3 day AP booster (this and the above are cash shop consumables)
Purple rarity items can be any one of:
    • 1 purple rarity signet
    • 1 purple rarity Augment Resonator
    • 1 x 110AP injection
    • 1 x 7 day AP booster
    • Set of Delivering Ritual fragments (used to access one of the game's raids).

The AP Booster / AP Injections are the only things in there that are not obtainable by gameplay.  [EDIT: but AP themselves of course are obtained by ordinary gameplay: 50 AP, without any boosters, can be had by running 2 or 3 missions in Transylvania.]

Purple rarity signets, and purple or higher rarity Augment resonators, are currently the most valuable things on the player market in TSW, though a significant number of the 60 or so signet types are viewed as of limited value in both current PvE and PvP metas & sell for comparatively low prices on the player market (and if you wind up with a Serenity, Subjugation or Hatred you'd probably be best off just vendoring it).

As I noted in an earlier post, it's the boxes themselves, not keys to open boxes which drop in the game world, that are sold on the cash shop.

Currently Funcom store points are a little over 7 UK pounds for 1000.

  • Po_ggPo_gg Twigwarren, WestfarthingPosts: 2,714Member Uncommon

Damn... where did you found that? I thought the "what's in the box" is a valid question but I haven't found the list, so I logged in and wrote it up. Logged out, came back to post it, and -dang- it's already here :)

edit: yep, as dancingstar summarised after the list, sadly it's a pretty good deal. I wouldn't like to cry out P2W, but it definitely could save a lot of grind and / or spending for the player who are willing to gamble... And the AP injections which are store-only and not obtainable in-game, are 480 / 1440 FC in the store.
