Guild Wars 2 worth it?

ASVPASVP Member Posts: 15

Games like Rift are games that I feel like I'll have so much fun with but I end up getting bored by level 20. But for Guild Wars, it's more of a playstyle that I feel like I'll enjoy because it seems really fun, but on the other hand I hear lots of people don't like it overall and it's way too easy.

Anyone who owns this game can tell me is it honestly worth the $50 and is it actually fun?

Thanks

If it means much coming from one person, I've put in nearly 800 hours in the three months that I've been playing the game. My girlfriend had me play it and I immediately got hooked. It's not necessarily easy, but it can get very easy if you have a dedicated group that knows what they're doing. Dungeon runs with PUGs, on the other hand, can be seen completely different.

I'm just having so much fun with the game, it's insane. The quality that ArenaNet has put into it is astounding. It's literally THE best MMO I've played. And I've been playing since 2001.

I will say its worth it.  Been playing all facets of the game for a long time now, and I havn't played anything that changes so many things since... ever I guess.

But, can I ask what you are specifically looking for with the game?  Asking such a generic question will be sure to draw a lot of love and hate responses, which might not be so helpful.

Depends what you want from it.

I dont play it hardcore, I do casual dungeons and I love PVP, I love the game for it, it is really free and I am as good as anyone who does dungeons or buys weapons through the ingame shop. Skills do matter.

Cheap market exotic weapons are the same as highend dungeon weapons, the dungeon stuff just has a nicer skin if ppl want to show it off. :)

+ with ingame gold you earn ingame you can unlock extra fluff features like a extra character slot, or inventory slots. It is not P2W though.

If you are in it for traditional themepark endgame raids to have uber armor+weapons to pwn other players (aka the gear>everything else treadmill) you might be in for a bad experience though. For example in PVP I with cheap exotic ugly gear I can defeat any player with full dungeon gear, unless he is really better skilled then me.

No, its not. Possibly the worst gaming experience I've had. Not just MMOs, all games I be played.

It really depends on whether you like "action" MMOs, or not. I can see that action MMOs are really dominating the playing field right now. The biggest two gripes I have with action MMOs is that they are very twitch-based and they only allow you access to a small amount of skills at any one time. Both of these are the case with GW2. It makes sense, considering the fact that if the action is fast and tight, you can only handle so many skills at once.

Personally, I like a wider breadth of skills that are employed in different situations. I'm not a huge fan of twitching-based gameplay in MMOs. This is just a personal preference, of course.

Played: UO, DAoC, Shadowbane, DDO, LOTRO, Aion, Rift, TERA
Sampled: WoW, AoC, GW2, Vanguard, FF XIV, Neverwinter

    Worth it? ABSOLUTELY.

It´s a great game that will Entertain You at least 80 levels of very high quality content & design.

After that it all depends on you....

But´s it´s worth every single penny.

Lots of good work  into that game.

Just to have fun and try something new for a change. I always get bored of games like Rift and such because I can never really have a constant party to always play with.

But for this game (what it seems like) I can solo and have fun because I'll always be moving around instead of standing in one place and spam a few buttons.

And at end game, would constantly playing PvP and such be fun?

I bought it before release, I think i;ve only leveled up to about 40 or 50, but I still deem it worth the cost. simply because I can update and play it again whenever I like. I will eventually get my moneys worth, in my own time. sub mmos I feel obliged to consume content quickly and just burn out.

GW2 is one of the best games out there, and is most definitely worth your money.

It may be themepark, but its the prettiest themepark of all.

Only a shame you've waited so long to try it out as lower zones are a bit less populated now than compared to launch.. when it was chaos.. and awesome

Thanks guys but one more question

At the end, would be playing PvP with your level 80 is something fun or just to pass time because there isn't really anything to do

One of the best games in the genre IMO. Endgame PVE is the only thing I find lacking, but the rest of the game is great.

I think GW2 is rather good. I have 2 characters at 80 and still log in and play a few times a week. Definately worth the money for the time you will spend in game :)

GW2 direction is losing a lot of players. This living story that changes the world month to month and then is replaced the next month never to see that new content again, has left many players wanting. New zones that come from living story feel disjointed and useless when its over. Really all you can do is farm mats. Stop playing for a few months to come back to nothing new because the content you missed is gone forever.

Also the living story content is very flaky. It has no depth or substance. When you play it you have to ask why? Its poorly written as well and thats the saddest part.

Also the combat is fun for the first bit but becomes a pain when you team long term. Everything end game is a zerg, PvP, Dungeons and open world PvE. Very low on tactics are needed as its mostly about numbers. In the end you start feeling like you are playing wack a mole. Follow the zerg and hit red things.

IMO this game is worth playing alone as this is the only time you get to really enjoy the game. Story is good before living story. Combat solo takes timing and reflexes. Great single player action game.

It's pretty much the same as all MMORPGs. Folks will say there is no end game but what game really does? Everything is about being fed by the developers to keep on playing to spend money. It's up to you what you want to do at level cap. /shrug

Yes, the game is a whole lot of fun, plus some.

PvP is dependent on WHAT KIND OF PvP you enjoy.

There's the ranked/unranked sPvP, which is not level-based, but skill-based.   There it's instanced maps with team scores based on point capture (although they are currently working on Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, and a few other modes).

World vs. World vs. World is where true PvP is at.   Right now there's the 3 identical Borderland maps, the Jumping Puzzle map, and the Eternal Battlegrounds map; however they're currently guild testing the Mists map to add an additional location for that.  Besides being able to level 1-80 there, you'll also be gaining WvW Ranks too.  Those you can use to increase your siege weapon capabilities, supply usage, defenses/attacks against NPC guards, and so much more.  With the WvW Ranks, it's consistent progression because nobody has made it to the ultra high levels of ....I think it goes up to 2,000,...but I could be wrong.

Also, you can search around and try to find it cheaper than $50.  Best Buy has it for $40 and that took 10sec to Google.   Even check your local software stores that might have the box for cheap if possible.     However, it's still well worth the $50 full price if you pay that much.

This guy forgot to add..."for a month" after his claim that it is the best game out there. Soon as you hit max level on a character you will quickly discover why everyone left this game in droves.

Any evidence to back up your clearly biased, yet false claims? Because the last word of the developers is that the game was growing, not losing customer "in droves". Not once has the game, in it's 1.5 year run, has it had to merger servers; completely unlike nearly every other MMORPG that has launched in the past 4+years that all have had to merger away servers.

I paid $30 for it, and it is fun for a while .... will last longer than a SP game, so i consider it good value.

Are you talking playing 1 hour a day every other day? Or maybe 12 hours a day 7 days a week. A month is very vague. Currently if I play WoW for a month at 3 hours a day I will hit max level and leave in a "drove". GW2 is no different than any other current AAA game out. None of them imho currently can hold anyones attention for an extended period.

edit: Also, for the dollar value it is probably the best out. If you do get bored and want to come back later there is no subscription renewal to mess with, you simply start playing where you left off. It is your game and you aren't renting it.

I paid $40 for it and thought I got my moneys worth. I no longer play it however. After a few months (at least to me) it became rather stale and monotonous.

Once you get to know the classes a bit it's basically the same 2-3 button presses with the only change up really being Realm V Realm/PvP where its more reactive. Even then, my experience was giant zerg roaming for one place to another taking over keeps/resource areas that were defended by a skeleton crew. I can count on one hand the amount of truly large Realm V Realm encounters I had in my time with the game, and when those did happen the FPS slow downs where really bad even with my rather good PC.

It has no sub so like I said, I got my $40 worth, just depends if you're looking for something long term or a short few month fix. For me it was s few month fix before I moved on to other things.

Yeah, it is.  The game sports world vs. world vs. world, which is 3 way server battles on large maps in which you can siege objectives and such.  At level 80, I would consider it one of the primary things to do in the game.

Dude just buy it, I am 700hours + into the game and it's alot of fun.

almost everyone agrees atleast that it's worth your money and like they say, no sub and if you get boared take a break for a few months log in again and pick up where you left off.

This is a game for me and I dpn't know what you played before of what you seek in a game but like everyone says it's worth your money.

Is GW2 worth it, in a word 'no'.

    Here is why:-

    • The overwhelming problem is that they tried to streamline every previous mmo and in the process cut away a lot of meat with the fat.
    • The hearts or 'dynamic (aka very static)' events' are '!' by another name.  There is simply no difference between them, it is just sales speak.  But worse, because you do not need to visit a hub or talk to an npc they seem and are entirely trivial.
    • The map is like tetris, a bunch of rectangles pressed together like lego, it looks horrible and feels horrible, and it is heavily instanced.
    • They try to replace content with jumping puzzles and other mini-games for morons.  It feels like trying to insert the triangular block through the triangle hole on Rainbow.
    • The central story is amateurish in the extreme.
    • The apparently constantly updated living story is a poor substitute for longer term real content.  It forces you to play it at the dev's timescale, rather than your own, which is a cardinal sin.  When the hell did a dev tell me when I am allowed to have free time?
    • There are fast travel points everywhere, and I mean you cannot walk two metres without reaching one which removes you entirelt from any sense of immersion.
    • There is no need to socialise at all.  You auto join people for the few fleeting moments it takes to complete a quest then discard them like a used tissue.
    • The limited toolbar, choice of skills, elite skill hunting, and the WVW that resulted from this in GW1 has been removed in its entirety.  In its place someone has crapped on their keyboard.
    • It is basically the GW module of Sims.
that is my summation of the game.

I could go through and pick all those points apart but there is one that always irritates me most. The one about travel points. If you don't like so many travel points simply don't use them. If there weren't travel points other players would complain that there weren't enough. It's a no win situation. The rest are easily just as terrible for saying "no" to. This is a game that is the same price as SP PC or console game but with hundreds of hours of play time. It has won numerous awards and is most definitely a yes imho. Sorry I disagree with yours.

I've been playing GW2 since launch and still enjoy the game.   So much depends on what you as an individual desire from a game.  I'm in a very active guild that has different daily events and I'm never bored when I log in.  So for me, it's certainly worth it and I've gotten more than my money's worth from this game.
