Realm Zero (Sandbox MMORPG)

realmzerorealmzero Orlando, FLPosts: 18Member
Realm Zero is an independently developed sandbox MMO game that I started earlier this year (2013). This projects main focus is to get away from the traditional MMO style game play which many people have become accustomed to over the years. Players have been spoiled with tab targeted combat, bored by repetitive tasks and consumed by endless hours of level grinding. So the goal is to make a game that both casual and extreme gamers can enjoy without feeling like it’s a life commitment.

The game is about to be released to the current alpha subscribers on 12/20/2013.
Note: Registration is currently closed until the next phase.

You can follow the games progression since the begging by checking out my blog.

Here are some of the videos up until this point of the games development. You can look forward to even more videos after the game hits alpha in 14 days. I have a backlog of over 100+ models I'm waiting to implement into the game along with tons of new features.

Projectile System

Network Engine

Online Player Movement

New Character - Human Male

Last but certainly not least, a look at the new UI layout that will be available upon alpha release.

I like what you are aiming for.

The UI shown looks great. The armor&weapon icons are really nice.

The world graphics are probably in a too early state to comment on, and I really like that you focus on backend and systems first.

Looking forward to what you come up with.

Thanks, yeah I haven't implemented any shaders or advanced rendering techniques yet.

Here is a video that I posted yesterday, showing off some of the spells for testing in alpha.

Just curious. How many people do you have working on your project? Is it a full time project, or is this a project you guys are working on in your spare time?

If it's a full time project, congratulations, lots of people would like their job to be writing a game. :-) If it's a spare time project, !holy cats! you actually wrote something in your spare time, congratulations. :-)

It won't hurt my feelings if you don't want to answer for confidentiality reasons or something.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

It's a spare time project, but I set aside time to make it happen.

I wake up at 5:00 AM work until 8:00 AM, go to work (software engineer). Then I typically get in another 10 hours on the weekend. So I average around 25 hours a week spent towards development.

Right now it's just me. The plan is to create a well established foundation and over the next few years turn it into a business and hire on a few more developers / artists. In the early stages too many cooks in the kitchen can just complicate things.

Wait, what?  How do you draw anything at all without shaders?  Is it all using the fixed function pipeline?  Don't start there if you're planning on moving to a more modern approach later.

Quick update it's been awhile but development has been full steam ahead.

The website has been completely redone to help showcase our development screenshots, videos, concepts and player submissions.

The past few months i've been busy implementing shaders and advanced rendering techniques as well as implementing terrain paging. Here are a few screenshots demonstrating the application of normal mapping with PSSM shadowing methods.

A physics system has also been implemented as well, you can checkout the website or my youtube channel for more demonstrations.
