That same exaggerated cartoony style has been around even in the N64 era. Reason may be is because this game is not aiming for realism style. If realism is more wanted, ESO may be the answer.

Jet Force Gemmi is one such game that involved exploring different planets from space-ships to under-ground sewers. Spryo Dragon is another. Jak and Dexter are others. All of these games have the same cartoony look and are games that were around either before WoW or near the same time-line.

What reasons this may be? Artistically wise it may be easier to create things with a cartoon style. It is easier to create more exaggerated effects than it would be to have realistic models do the same without coming off as cheesy. The other is to give the game a look of fun and inviting than the gore, blood, and sweat emphasis often associated with realistic game style. Or it could possibly be that Wildstar is aiming for a PG-13 audience or younger.

With the preview combat of the game it's like a hand-holding introduction to action paced games that are already fleshed out on the consoles.
