    Have you ever read Machiavelli?

Because "who cares what route they take to get there, as long as they punish [x]" is the very definition of Machiavellian.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

There are already cyber bullying laws popping up at the state level around the U.S. How you act online is quickly coming with repercussions. It isn't like SOE is saying they're partnering with the NSA to get access to your e-mails. They are saying if you cause problems in their games, on their forums, or online in anyway that connects back to you and their games, you will be removed from their products.

Every other MMO already says that if you do something bad in their games or on their forums you will be removed from their products. They simply added the social media aspect, which I am sure many companies already follow and just don't make a point of saying it, or will follow soon.

I'm not surprised trolls are worried about this. They'd have to actually act in a responsible adult manner for a change and they've grown up without the knowledge of how to do so.

I whole heartedly agree with SOE on this and I despise them as a company. I support any other company that cracks down on internet asshats as well.

Personally I dont see how anyone can be so called cyber bullied. Its easy to just log off the net... or close a webpage and move on...  But back to SOE, I think they are making a huge mistake by looking for a problem... If someone sends death threats ok I get it or if they beat up someone in real life ok. But for a guy saying someone sucks or their guild is retarded...

LOL, its to much... To be honest I find most people who have fairy tail dreams of a world were everyone prances around in pink  daisy dukes and holds hand to be ass hats.

I think you are confusing people realizing their words and actions have consequences with a fairy tale (not a fairy with a tail).

Those who think they can say whatever they want and be mean to whoever they wish are the ass hats. The crack down on such stuff is only going to increase as the years go on.

SOE isn't spying on anyone, they're saying if you publicly do stuff then you can get banned. Don't be stupid and be an asshole in public if you don't want to be punished for doing so. Pretty easy to have this never affect you in any way, shape, or form.

You show your true colors when you use the fact that calling people or things retarded isn't a problem to begin with. Words don't bother me, and trolls don't affect me. But at the same time it is great to see them targeted and taken care of. They fully deserve anything that comes their way.

And to say you don't know how anyone can be cyber bullied, it doesn't stay only in the online realm. It travels to the real world as well from stuff that happened on the internet. So maybe you could ask the families of those who have killed themselves over the never ending harassment they got from some major trolls who ruined a person's life just to get their jollies.

Reguardless if SOE is right or wrong in this matter I can not for the life of me be purported to side with them by any means...

That said I have always advocated for non lenience for game breakers weather it be exploit or script or hack...

BUT when it comes to speaking ones mind weather it be objectionable language or an actionable portrayal of dissidence I am all for it. That is what parental controls and the ignore lists are for.

You are trying to take books and quotes that intelligent people reference, but you are twisting them completely.

Trolling, griefing, harassing, is already against every online game's rules. They are just saying if you do it publicly in social media you could be punished as well.

Companies already fire for things said on social media. Towns and states are already creating cyber bullying laws which can get you arrested for your online actions.

None of this is new. And it isn't a totalitarian government regime either. It is a person being punished for doing something that is wrong.

Go ahead and say it is wrong to arrest a guy for murder because he talked about doing it on Twitter while you're at it. How dare they go outside the crime scene itself and catch the person in an online, unrelated, space for his crimes???? The horror of it all.

It's not always possible to identify people [in that way], but we take that seriously.”SOE uphold different standards for each of their games: they wouldn’t expect the same kind of behaviour in a competitive shooter like Planetside 2 as they would in a collaborative MMO like EverQuest. But Carlson said standards do need to exist, in clearly-stated form - and that SOE need to reinforce them with bans for bad behaviour both in and outside their games when necessary.--------------------------------------------------------------------When I first read this I was like yay... Deal with them fracking exploitiers and anti-social buggers. However, the more I read the more concerned I became. At what point is the line drawn, who are they to go picking around through social media looking for negative comments. Does it end at their own personal pages or will they go beyond that? If I call their game a bucket of trash and hope they drive their cars into a lake are they going to feel the need to ban my ass from all their games. It never turns out well when you threaten not only your customers but, all of the online community with the ban stick.
Wow, SOE made a business move that isn't just out of financial gain but out of MORAL *gasp*

Ya, but I agree with this in a sense. When I first started MMOs I was about 10 or 11, and I was a prick. I'd use completely profane language, I'd insult people and get into stupid arguments, it was a terrible thing, I should have been banned.

That kind of behaviour should result in punishment, and ultimately weed out the pre-pubescent children, griefers and a-holes from the games. This is a large part of the decline of the MMO industry as well.

I'd say kudos to you SOE, but I'm just not sure to what extent these manhunts will go, and whether or not these companies will access my personal profiles. Jokes can be misinterpreted, exaggerated anger for certain situations could be misread and so forth.
We'll have to see how their formula works with the community.

ACLU has nothing to do or say in this.

As I've said many times in this thread; in the USA a business has the right to refuse service to a person at anytime for any reason that isn't covered by discrimination laws (gender and race are examples). Just as a casino can ask you to leave at anytime, an online game can refuse to let you play at any time.

You don't have a right to play whatever you want, but a business DOES have the right to refuse letting you play.

You really should research things before declaring police states and civil liberty violations.

True true! I'm going to get ethical here...

Moral is based on the reach of your actions. You can only swing your fist until it hits another person.
Having this 'freedom of speech' is a bullshit excuse to incorrectly, and ignorantly offend and annoy people. If what you say affects you and only you, then you have the freedom to do what you want, when you want. But when it comes to affecting other people, you can't say negative things, that's where the freedom ends.

It's a poor excuse to use the 'freedom of speech' BS.

"The ends justify the means" is how Machivellian is most often abbreviated. Which is why I asked how many have read The Prince.

He was talking about power, and the use of power. As in it may be necessary to use violence in order to build a state, and it may be necessary to use violence to maintain a state. The ends; a flourishing state, justifies the means; violence. I may have misused the semicolons there.

So SOE's approach is the same general idea. The ends; a pleasant gaming environment, justifies the means; tying player behavior outside of the games with their access to the games themselves. You could even say that SOE is building a virtual state, which they govern in a totalitarian manner, and their methods are the equivalent of violently removing or exterminating those that do not fit in with their definition of acceptable citizens.

I've never read The Prince, but other people have, and they are probably better at summarizing it than I am, so I read their stuff.

So maybe you could ask the families of those who have killed themselves over the never ending harassment they got from some major trolls who ruined a person's life just to get their jollies.

no a fairy tail..... The world i tough. Hiding behind a closed door will not change it.  My true colors? Are simple i am a guy we talk about alot of crude and rude things and are mean to each other at times. Its what evolution as preset us to be.

Hence, male bonding. It is not my fault or problem that parents did not encourage their children to interact with others. I personally believe that its a persons responsibility to walk away if they dont like the convo. Its what we do in the real world.

Everyone has been bullied. Unless someone is getting beaten or physically hurt. Its something they need to overcome. Making laws that demand people be polite will just give us a culture of sneaky, unresponsive drones.

And if a troll on a internet forum can ruin someone life..... They have bigger issues then any law or policy can fix....,

Again if someones life is threatened or they are beat up in real life its a different story....

So, even though a girl just jumped off of a building due to cyber-bullying a few days ago, we should do nothing about it?

    I strongly disagree.

Bullying is bullying, no matter the environment.

I dont know the story behind the girl but her parents should have disconnected her internet if it was distressing her to the point of jumping off a building.

Bullying happens every day in every facet of life, its human nature. Bosses bully employees, law enforcement bullies civilians, hell fat people bully you out of the way in the supermarket isles.

And I think anyone who wishes to dissuade themselves of the realities of life is in a fairy tail world.

As I have said before, you can be fired from a job if you do something that is illegal "outside of work". There is precedent for it.

It's my guess that harassing someone on Twitter or threatening someone's life on facebook constitutes as "illegal".

So I wouldn't automatically say that any lawsuit by a player over something like this will be an automatic win.

additionally I would be very surprised if a player actually put forth a lawsuit as it costs money to such a thing. If the player loses they will be responsible for those costs which could be hefty.

Over a video game that costs 60 dollars plus time and additional costs. Almost seems "more" worth it to get another account under another name.

The internet is not some private thing, where *you* get to pick and choose what others read. *You* put it out there for everyone with a computer to read at their leisure. Maybe, just maybe, the time of an internet without consequences is going away. Maybe, just maybe, we start acting like human beings again. Perchance to dream...

What is truly sad is that this kind of action even needs to be implemented in the first place as enough human beings have shown time and time again that we are incapable of policing our own individual selves.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

No, not really, most of us are decent people who want to see others behave themselves.  The internet has proven that too much freedom actually can be a bad thing, or it all goes back to the concept of why we can't have nice things.

People just can't seem to control themselves, the story about the invisible man is a great telling of what happens to humans who are anonymous.

The right to refuse service, correct. But you cannot take someone's money and then refuse them service.

    LOL! Not quite.

It's no different than a restaurant or bar throwing out a rowdy drunk. Doesn't matter that they already took your money. If you're an abusive asshole, they have the right to bounce you out on your ass.

Im saying I dont no what happened to this girl. Yes its a sad story, A young person kills themselves. If they dissconnected her net she wouldnt be cyber bullied...

How does homework pertain to social sites? And as for your quote "The greatest evil is that good men do nothing" By that definition all people on this planet are evil since we do nothing to cure suffering or pain of the third world and of our homeless.

But then again I was talking about forum trolls and you great thespians took it to the extreme in playing out the conversation that was displayed only in your minds.

Well now it is even more official that you're a troll because you insist on looking intelligent by typing fairy tail instead of tale.

You are in for a rude awakening in life when you start losing jobs or even getting arrested for your online actions as you think acting like an immature jerk is great and anyone who is bothered by it is the one who is in the wrong. Life is going to really hurt when it slams into you hard enough to open your eyes.

LOL, its not my fault that you have issues with the fairy tail.... not a bad anime.... I dont threaten people online lol... Nor do I fight people for their online banter or actions. And still even more I bully people in RL or online...

I think you are the one in for a rude awaking because this idea you have of how the world runs is fantasy. Do you think anyone on this planet gets on top with out be aggressive?  Im stating my opinion and you are getting flustered. And even managed to go off topic.

This thread is about SOE'S decision to track its customers. Not weather or not I agree with your views on life,

This entire thread is about people's views on whether or not it is ok for them to do this which directly goes with people's view of life. So no, just because all of your points have been shot down by numerous people and your true colors have come out, I have not gone off topic.

I am plenty awake and aware of the laws and rules out there. You are the one who is not. It has nothing to do with aggression either, since we're on the topic of going off topic.

There is nothing flustered in any of my posts. [mod edit]

The First Amendment applies to GOVERNMENT restriction of certain rights. It's why the first few words of the darn thing are "Congress shall make no law".  SOE is a private company. Try again.
