Confused about pre-ordering digital or retail

Both offer early access. But how can the retail version do this without a digital early access?

    Straight from the website:

"If you pre-order FFXIV: A Realm Reborn from a participating retailer and register the pre-order code within the specificied time period, you will be granted access to play FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn prior to the official launch! "

The retailer emails you a code for your pre-order.  You have to download the game over the internet to play Early Access, though.

So, basically, you are downloading the game either way if you want to play early.  Because, you aren't getting the retail shipment before the actual launch date, ever.

The game launch is on the 27th, and they don't even ship/give out those physical copies until the 27th.

So, if you are going to download to play EA, then the only reason to order retail is if you just want the physical box/contents.
