EQN looks like a disney cartoon, i.e. a kids game.

EQ 'vets' think it should look like a game catered more to adults.

Two way street. I am also an old gamer, and dislike cartoony graphics. But EQN does not look too cartoony nor unrealistic.

And graphics are a poor excuse to shoot the game down. As older gamers its more about content, features, freedom, etc. I care less about the graphics as long as I don't have to suffer through another new aged wow clone cookie cutter mmo with the entitlement era kids wanting everything dumbed down and easy.

    Roughly........

     OMG this.

I've said time and time again I'd play Tiddlywinks Online if the gameplay was amazing and offered me hard challenging content with a focus on a virtual world.  Great thing is EQN offers me most everything I've wanted from an MMO since Asheron's Call and the last thing I will complain about is how it looks.

So, the last thing you would complain about is how it looks, but you would complain about it? People don't like the way it looks, is that so hard to understand.... Isn't that  a valid complaint?

Ever heard of this thing called figure of speech?  Do not twist or read into what I wrote when it's meant to be tongue in cheek.

I'll just keep it at this sense you failed to grasp the humor.  I could care less about graphics,,,,I'd play EQN if it was stickmen.

Does that make it any more clear?

Random Forum Poster: I want an MMO that is different, original and fun.

Me: So you want something like EQN

Them: Nah dude, I want a Holy Trinity, Tab Target combat, Instanced Raiding, and Rigid classes.

    Me: Double Facepalm.

If you find the concern to be trivial, you should just avoid the thread.

For example, if I am at a bus stop and two men are having an animated discussion over whether or not a sports team is any good, I would not interject if I found the conversation to be frivolous. "Hey, sports is dumb! real men discuss foreign policy!" However, if I felt I had a valid insight into their discussion, then I would chime in and hope to elevate their discussion beyond mere argument.

Doc, I would advise to read your post over again because unfortunately that is how you come off as.

I played EQ1 when it first came out as well and I can agree without hesitation that the "world" and community that was built was grand. It would be hard to chime in when your opinion is set, it will constantly be an argument until AFTER people have seen what EQNext actually offers in the game to the 'T'.

As of right now there is not much but what SOE has shown us in their goals for the game, which to me sounds like they are creating a world where adventure will be on the top of the list (what we all had back in the beginning).

    But when you say;

So, now we have EQ Next. To me, the cartoony graphics AND animations hint at a far different set of design goals. If they were really going for the same feeling of drawing me into the world, they would not design characters that looked children's cartoon figures (the kerran looks like Simba) or acted like them (whirlwind looks like what the Tazmanian Devil does). Do not get me wrong, I have no problem with graphics that stray from attempts at photorealism. However, they do not have to make characters look like objects one can find on Toys R' Us shelves.
To me, this idea of having characters teleport through the air, pounce around, and whirl about foolishly all while looking like children's cartoons tells me that the intended audience is certainly not me. I want a world to draw me in. I want to feel the oppresiveness of Neriak. I want to smell the stench of Oggok. I do not want to feel as if I am roaming through a Disney film.

Moreover, I very much doubt that a game which looks like it was made for my 8 year old nephew to play will have things like required grouping, punitive death, non-instanced dungeons, rare spawns or the like.

How can people have a discussion about this? Am I saying you're wrong - no. I don't know what the game will play like as I haven't seen anything more than a tech demo. But these are hard opinions to have a discussion about as it's the only opinion people want to use to get angry about and throw the game into the garbage (childish if you ask me). You either like it or you don't, there isn't much room at the moment to wiggle past that.

I would get into more but there is no point to do so, you've made up your mind and I do hope you find what you're looking for.

Yes! I agree with this whole heartedly! However, for some people, at times myself included, graphics alone can ruin a game.

I have never dated a brunette.

Realize, I think EQN looks(graphics included) pretty damn promising.

I don't think any one said it wasn't a valid opinion most opinion are valid to the person expressing them.If you can't get past the graphics then you can't and should look elsewhere.

The problem most have is we've heard this complaint over and over which wouldn't be an issue if it was contained to one thread and discussed there but there's about 100 threads a day started by the same people saying the same thing they've been saying since the second with no new points.

    It gets boring.

This is much easier for me to understand. Thank You. Truly.

No worries...while I like the look of EQN's world I'm merely ambivalent  about  the character graphics.I can live with them as long as they are animated well and fluidly.I like the ideas of EQN but that's all they are right now I'm not sold on EQN at all unless those concepts become reality.

I understand being put off by graphics,it's why I don't play TSW for em while the models are fine the animations whilst fine individually don't flow well together and don't have any weight or impact during combat.I don't feel like I'm ever hitting anything or really combining attacks.I couldn't get past that like others can't get past EQN's look.

The difference is I don't flood the TSW forums with that one opinion and have moved on.

Have you ever even met a human?

Of that type unfortunately yes though I have also met humans who transcend that level of spiritual immaturity. I find it fascinating honestly that one would care so much about the game's graphics and so little about the mechanics... it's akin to seeking a mate based solely on physical appearance which always ends with someone being gagged.

Also could you tell your Nation Aerospace and Space Administration organization to get their toy RC car off my lawn... they're tearing up the astrodunes.

    Re the OP:

I am willing to give them a pass on the cartoon graphics and animations.  If they provide depth and choice and a decent sand park it can overcome that.

What worries me much more is a class/skill system where the intent seems to be that players will be self-sufficient.  To me this sounds like GW2 all over again - basically a single player game with chat.

I don't want another single player game masquerading as an MMO....

Think it would be good if they added both.  Self reliance as well as the ability for someone to turn themselves into a raid tank or healer if that is the roll they enjoy.

I know some people are angry and disappointed... but there're just too few of you people.

EQN is SOE's attempt to battle WoW, so they can't really focus on the decreasing hardcore crowd, can they?

WoW is the king of the hill because it successfully introduce the genre to the more casual crowd, and surprisingly enough, there're A LOT of these people! If the hardcore crowd was dominating the genre then EQ & EQ2 should have took down WoW back in 2004 or some time later, but obviously they didn't.

    My two cents.

I've lurked these forums and this site off and on for a bit and registered just so I could post my thoughts on what has been revealed about EQN.

Before I dig in to my opinion, I want to give a bit of background of my own experience with the EQ brand. I started EQ1 before there were any expansions for it. It was my first MMO. A buddy of mine played UO but that wasn't for me. EQ1, however, took hold of me almost immediately. It did many things very well. I felt that I was in a living, breathing world. There were boats that ran on a schedule. There were day and night cycles. There was a world with assorted and believable cities and factions that interacted in believable ways. One could not traverse the world with ease. At certain points, you needed escorts to get across difficult areas. In fact, to approach a single camp of bandits on your own was pretty much suicide. The game required patience and you needed to make friends. Some folks met on the game and had full on roleplayed marriages. I mean, how is that for building connections in game?

No game, not even EQ2, has managed to draw me in as EQ1 did. Part of this is, of course, because it was the first MMO I played. But it is also because no successful MMO since has really tried to do what EQ did. That game tried to build a true WORLD. The only other game I tried since that approach this method of design was Vanguard and, sadly, when I tried it the world was empty and it was simply no fun adventuring on my own.

For example, why not look to fantasy artists like Frank Franzetta. Sure, his style is not photo realistic but no one would dare call it childish. Why could they not adopt a painterly style that looked more, well, adult and less childish?

To me, this idea of having characters teleport through the air, pounce around, and whirl about foolishly all while looking like children's cartoons tells me that the intended audience is certainly not me. I want a world to draw me in. I want to feel the oppresiveness of Neriak. I want to smell the stench of Oggok. I do not want to feel as if I am roaming through a Disney film.

Moreover, I very much doubt that a game which looks like it was made for my 8 year old nephew to play will have things like required grouping, punitive death, non-instanced dungeons, rare spawns or the like.

What can I say... I am disappointed.

I doubt we will ever see a community/game like eq1 again.

How is instant gratification derived from poor visual presentation?
