Web browser MMORPG editor

Hey everyone,

I hope you’re having an awesome day. I’m excited to tell you about a really cool game making platform we’ve been pouring the last year into. It’s called Gameleon! It’s a cloud based game editor and publishing platform that we’d really like to get some feedback on.

Why is it so exciting? Well, let’s put it like this. Have you ever wanted to create your own game, and publish it online for thousands of people to play? Well, you can’t really do that without some programming experience, technical know how, dedicated hardware and much more.

You’ll probably want to know straight away what kind of games you can make with Gameleon, and to keep the answer short, you can make 2D and isometric MMORPG’s and similar games ( single player RPG’s, hack and slash games, point and click adventures and so on). In fact, to showcase this exact point we’ve taken an iconic RPG - Diablo 2 - and re-created its first few levels.

It tooks us two days to extract models and textures from the original Diablo and import them into our editor. You can check out a video with the result on our official page!

We designed it with user-friendliness in mind, and specifically tailored it to people who are non-technical in such a way that it doesn’t require any knowledge of programming languages, animation, etc. It’s very intuitive and 100% visual: everything is done with a drag and drop interface, and the scripting and AI behaviors and such are all pretty easy.

The finished editor will also have an Asset Market, where you can upload assets made for your games and auction them to others (or give them away for free). This means that not only game creators will want to use Gameleon, but also artists and programmers, sound designers and recorders, who will be able to get a buck out of helping people with bits and pieces to make their own games.

We’ve entered open beta recently and have opened up the beta version editor to the world. We’d really like to get your feedback on this.

In the left hand side of the interface there are resources and links to get you started: you’ll find maps and skins to start making maps for the beta, as well as links to the community and to the contact form, videos and more. We’ve tried to make it so that you have an easy time getting started.

When we started out making Gameleon, we had a vision: to reinvent how the world creates and consumes online multiplayer games. To take game making from the elite few big companies and make it accessible to the vast majority of gamers out there. To crowdsource game making, if you will. We want to democratize game making, and we need you to do this!

If you like what you’ve read so far, please, gives us a hand and test out the editor! We’re excited to get your feedback and suggestions.

You can find all the information you need on our official site "gameleon.co" ,including the link to our live editor !

Will it do buildings with interiors as part of the landscape? Removable roofs/floors to enable visibilty inside? Roofs that can also be climbed up on? Buildings with windows and doors that can be shot through? Buildings with more than one floor?  Lockable, unlockable doors? Destructable walls?

Does it use sprites or 3D mobs? Do they have targetable parts like head, body, legs? Different stances, standing, crouched, prone? Is their movement grid based or free form?

To make it 'simple' is it capable of the Jagged Alliance type of game play and environment?

The answer for the majority of your questions is yeah:

-The interior is part of the landscape and when you enter  the roof becomes invisible ( becomes visible again when you exit them). This applies for everything that has an interior area such as buildings, caves, tunnels etc

-the roofs can be climbed by using a simple trick: when you click on the stairs, rope etc you can set the game to load a new identically map that will act as your roof top

-you can shoot through doors and windows if you change the line of sight concept. Your character cannot shoot through solid objects, but if you define that object as a polygon that doesn't represent an obstacle, then your character's line of sight will be clear and you can shoot through that object. You can also create an object that can be destroyed by shooting it,and once it is destroyed the object will transform itself into a non-obstacle,changing its appearance into something damaged and enabling the character to shoot trough it.

-you can create buildings with several floors. it's the same tactic as the roof stuff. when you climb the stairs or the elevator the map changes and acts as a second floor

-yeah,you can create lockable and unlockable doors

-you can destroy walls and any other object you want

    -it uses sprites

-gameleon does not have the concept of targetable parts ( at least not yet, maybe in the future)

    - you can create different stance ( any stance you want: idle, stand, sit, sleep, prowl, anything you can think of)

    -the movement is free form

In conclusion, you can create a Jagged Alliance type of game if you don't mind the fact that you can't shoot heads or legs in particular :P

    Hey guys,

Don’t know if you know about Gameleon already or not, but it’s a cloud game creating platform for making HMTL5 MMO’s. More recently, and more interestingly for you guys, we’ve developed a feature that allows you to import World of Warcraft 3d models and use them in your own games!

It’s powerful enough to recreate stuff like Diablo 2 in a browser, with an entirely visual interface. If you want to know more about recreating Diablo 2, read more here: http://www.gameleon.co/platform/cloud-game-editor/prototyping-example-remaking-diablo-2-with-gameleon

But this is not the cool bit I’m trying to get at: we’ve just recently developed GIF support: just drag and drop GIFs into the Skin Editor tool to instantly create isometric animated models and skins to use immediately in your game.

To showcase this feature, we’ve used World of Warcraft as a source of models – and this is where a WoW modding community would probably get excited. You can export, using WoW Model Viewer, animated GIFs of any model in the game and use them directly to make your own games, mockups, mini-games etc. Read more about it here: http://www.gameleon.co/platform/cloud-game-editor/introducing-world-of-warcraft-model-and-gif-importing-in-gameleon

We’d love to hear what you think about this, and Gameleon in general.

Also, we’ve been thinking of implementing a method that directly imports your character from the WoW Armory, for either playing as that character or as a model to use in your own games made with Gameleon. What do you guys think about that?

    Interesting.

One thing you might want to do before you go too much further is have a talk with some legal people.  Building a tool to extract models and art assets from other games might get you in a lot more trouble than you want, even if you produce only original art in your own games.   I don't know, but even advertizing the ability to 'import' graphics from another game could be considered a 'game hack' type tool.   Make sure you're on solid ground legally.

But, I have been looking for something like this for a while.   I'll take an extended look at this when I can.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Our tool is not capable to extract the models. The .gifs we extracted using another tool, not ours, we then imported into our editor and we demonstrated how the editor is capable to recognize the image as a .gif and divide every frame from it to create a full animation.

I do appreciate your concern and I'm going to discuss with my team about it :D  We don't want to get into trouble either

On one hand, that sounds like a great tool.

On the other hand, I won't touch any tools whose developers seem to support and encourage piracy with a 10 foot pole. Ripping off assets from one game and using them in your is normally not legal unless you've got permission from the copyright owner.

Just to clarify the situation: we didn't use any of blizzard's assets to create a new game. All we did is create the videos to demonstrate that you could make such a game and how it would work . The Diablo map and the gif's cannot be found in our game maps and they were solely for testing purposes. :)

In your diablo test, the creatures are friendly. You do not show any combat.... And the gameflow seems slow.

Would you make it possible to make it able to be exported to exe?

Yes, in the Diablo movie they are friendly because my team chose only to demonstrate that you can create that kind of environment, so they didn't emphasize the combat capability of our editor. We are going to create separate tutorials for that.

Right now you can't export it as exe, everyone will be able to play your game using the link you are provided with after you publish. However, we are going to implement that feature soon enough. :)

We've talked a lot about Gameleon, we've encouraged you to check it out and tell us your opinions, but now it is time for you to play with it!

    Gameleon is now live!
The platform already comes with assets and themes built in, so you can start playing with the Editor and creating content right away, exploring it’s built-in content and creating new ones with ease.

We've also implemented a new system: each action in Gameleon is rewarded with points that unlock new and exciting content to make games with.

We’re proud to have received quite a bit of recognition for the innovative ideas behind its power and simplicity, such as the  “Innovation in Internet, Mobile and Software Computing Prize” at the Intel Global Challenge 2013 in Berkeley (as well as Best Pitch) or the IXIA Innovation Award in 2012. We’re also proud of our partnerships with Mozilla (through their WebFWD program) and Microsoft’s BizSpark Plus, who have helped us in our efforts to create a better game-making experience.
