ArcheAge Japanese Open Beta - Massively Review

One of the Massively people has played in the Japanese open beta, and has typed up a synopsis of what it was like to play the game. At least in Japan.

I think to sum it up from the article, AA has features similar to other sandboxes, current generation and past, but makes them more palatable to current players.

Thanks for this very useful link.

One thing it does is help us determine what kind of changes Trion can make in the NA version.

When studios release varying versions of games, they never change the code, but rather tweak tuning data.  (Which is why it would be difficult to swap the crafting system).

In this case we can surmise they have tuning data for, among other things, general mob aggressiveness and power level.

I prefer a game with hard PVE so I like the direction the Japanese variant is going.

I also prefer crafted items (especially large scale ones) to require upkeep and repair, but I suppose I can live without degradation.

What GameOn does to AA Japan has absolutely nothing to do with what Trion will be doing for NA/EU.

If anything all this shows us is what kind of changes XL Games will allow publishers to make to the game.

    That's all I said.

I just happen to like the japanese direction, not saying that's what Trion's going to do.

That was the point of the article. The Japanese are apparently not very into PvP, and very into PvE. The game still have PvP, but it's not always on. It's timed. It's also coupled with much harder PvE content compared to the Korean version of the game. That's about as dramatic as the changes got though. It's not a completely different game, it's just tuned a bit to be more appealing to the Japanese.
