DFUW first impressions

TimothyTierlessTimothyTierless ColumnistM, ORPosts: 2,163Member Uncommon

Whelp I've been doin the DF dance since the steam sale. I wanted to take a minute to do a bit O' the first impressions.

First of I was greatly disappointed by what they did to the races. I really enjoyed the diversity and distinct design difference of the races in DF. DFUW nuked that hard. Now we has 1 body type with a few skins. Not thrilling but whatevs.

The UI, the polish, the pretty is all much much better than original DF. Original DF UI drove me crazy. This one seems a bit overdone with so many little icons, and the check box yes thing seems odd but over ll it's a huge improvement. I like the left to right move wheel toggle, and I love the mouse wheel weapon select.

The class and leveling system is still a bit confuzzling to me. I miss the prior system of "use it to level it". I'm terribly worried that I will put points where they shouldn't go and end up ruining my character since (as far as I know) we have no respec ability? Normally I pre-game a new MMO hard, but this time I wanted to jump in blind and feel it out. I went skrim because it sounded like it had some good movement. The tank sounded slow? The casters sounded too papery? Yes? No? Someone wanna volunteer to do a short class breakdown and corresponding point allocation reply for me? Yeah, that'd be great...

I digg the tutorial. It served it's purpose but it wasn't until I got out and started killing stuff that I got that good old Darkfall feeling again. The world still felt very much like DF. Every MMO needs a world constructed like DF. It just feels real, like it has weight, like it was created not copy pasted. It's so nice playing a game where foliage is legit. It has forests, real forest feeling forests! You have no idea how much I despise the lack of forestry in MMOs. It's so nice NOT to be able to see across a "zone". It's so nice to feel small again. It's so nice to feel a real sense of adventure while out looking for random chests (I love me some random chest hunting).

As for it being empty or dead or not for crafters, I saw lots of people in the beginning zones, I'd say literally half of them were harvesting or crafting. When I ventured out into the wilds I saw less people (as it should be) but still ran into enough to be ganked once (it was my fault). Most players seem eager to guide and excited to have a new DF convert. Some of the less mature annoy but those guys are in every MMO and I quickly filled up a block list just based off of global chat.

I know my perspective will change greatly as I begin to understand the game more. Right now my universe is the starter area, goblins (I love killin those guys), and some occasional chaos chest searching. Most players haven't tried to kill me other than when I was in the middle of nowhere and naked like a fool. So far I'm really enjoying my return to the DF universe (the loot/harvesting system alone makes it worth trying).

I agree about the races lack of diversity, but you can blame the community for that one.  Everyone was bitching about the inequality of each race, so AV just made them all the same.

Can't blame the community for lazy design ideas.

AV could have figured out a different solution, they chose to take the easiest route.

If it was a hit box thing the might have just made them all the same height but kept the models? I dunno, something extreme must has been needed to do that with each race.

So what, you shoot a giant wolf and the arrow goes right through him?  You shoot three feet over a small alfar and hit him?  Those are bad compromises.  The easiest and most effective way was to take the route that AV did.  You can call it lazy, but it is the most effective.  I hate it though.  I prefer the different advantages and disadvantages that the races had.

I agree with you but I was just trying to give you an idea of some of the arguments people were making.  Big & small hit boxes, small and longer reach.  Potentially overpowered racial skills (4 legged running), etc.

You touched on it in your first impressions, but I don't know of any game in the history of MMO's that has as good of an atmosphere as Darkfalls world.  I love the style and feeling you get when roaming around.

I honestly can't remember one having a better world and I've played the majority of the respectable ones that came out in the last 10 years.

Keep in mind you can still change your Role whenever you want. Nothing you spend will be a waste in the long run.

Starting out, if you want to be a Skirm, I would focus on getting your dex, dex boosters, and bow skills up, as that is where the majority of your damage will come from.

Soon you should be looking at buying the additional Skirmisher skills, and leveling up all your Skirm skills.

I can change my role but I thought my stats would be locked so I might, for example, end up being statted as a skrm, then finding I like casting more, but being unable to take my points out of Dex and put them into Wisdom for ex. Or have they changed it so we can?

Nope, all prowess points spent are locked in.  Spend wisely.  Hopefully at some point AV will allow respec's to happen after all roles are released but I wouldn't hold my breath.  So while you can switch roles, you will be largely ineffective when not stat'ed properly for it.  As a skirm I think you should be getting your dex booster, increasing dex stat and buying your school skills.

Are Stats still locked in? Is it possible to max out all of your stats? Or are they capped? Or do you only get a limited amount of stat points to spend, period.

All stats can be raised to 100. And you can assign one booster to any one stat that can be purchased up to +40. So at any given time, a player can have one stat at 140 and all others at 100 theoretically.

The community asked for normalized hit boxes. AV created the normalized hit boxes with their DFO2010 models and those assets are currently in the game as Bandit style mobs. What happend is that AV didn't have all the different armor types done before beta so they cheesed out and made the human model, the only thing with everything done, look different for each race by changing texture. AV has said that eventually we'll get the Bandit race models as our character models, but who knows if that will ever happen and honestly, who cares since the game is completely devoid of any lore at all.

They are permanet, but only 1 active at a time. You can eventually buy all the boosters in the game, but it gets more exp expensive as you continue to level your character as well as exp being harder to attain. The avg player and those who abhor grind will most likely only max 2 roles and vary slowly, just by playing the game, attain the rest but will likely quit before attaining that goal, while those who like grind and want access to everything will get everything leveled up by power gaming.

At the end of the day, I think it was a good idea to normalize the classes and the hit box size.  It may killed diversity in terms of RP, but from combat point of view that is the right move

the races being all same is because they failed to implement their own vision.

Tasos mantra was for years don't ask for balance but set out for the strength of your own race and take the weakness as a man.

We see them failing again because they didn't made all the races intresting  but alöl the same unintresting.

Another of Av's fail. Another broken promise on the big list of broken promises.

Another reason this game fails so hard.

I too would prefer different racial advantages. I really don't care about balance in MMOs to be honest.

In addition to the reasons people have given about why they made all the races the same, I'm sure they also did it so they wouldn't have to redesign armor for differently sized races.
