SoE Pulls Another Cheap PR Grab with Exclusive Free Nagafen Pet

TorvalTorval Oregon CountryPosts: 7,195Member Uncommon

SoE Live attendees who play Dragon's Prophet will receive a free exclusive Nagafen dragon for their stable.

https://www.dragonsprophetthegame.com/news/nagafen-is-coming

Do you think this is a cool promotion or a cheap PR grab like many of Smedley's tweets?  Do you think game lore should stay in its own universe?

I don't think cross game promotions are bad, but I do think for certain lores iconic figures cheapen the representation.  You would think this would be cool for a game that is about collecting dragons, but Nagafen is a special dragon and the DP dragon's are a dime a dozen.  In my opinion is detracts from the iconic persona that Nagafen represents.  I think it also reinforces the signals that SoE has sent lately with Dragon's Prophet and EQ2 that it cares much more about pulling in revenue than it does with the integrity of its games, IPs, and most importantly the playerbase that supports it.

What do you think?

Nagefen is a dragon, he fits in the Dragon's prophet theme, and you don't get much harder to get than SOE Live. It's up to them and I'm fine with that.

I think you are grasping at straws for something to complain about.

It is also Dragon's Prophet, not EQ, not EQ2 and thankfully not EQ Next.  Heck broaden it out a little and give it as a pet  in PS2.

I like Nagafen for a dragon name.  IMO a rather widely known name at that ... i'm sure a game of dragons would want a celebrity such as Nagafen.

The two companies have a partnership, so I am not suprised  - I just hope that a lot of the EQ lore stays with EQ over time ...

Sure, rename it to "Anything you want" and no one would have known or cared. Done, move along. The only thing I can see anyone having a problem with is the name. They could have done this with the exact same image and just used a different name. I think it's kind of cool that SOE is treating Dragon's Prophet like it is in their stable of games, which it is, even though they didn't develop it.

Clearly you are new to SoE and SoE Live / Fanfaire.

Every year they offer people who attend exclusive in-game items and free expansions to EQ/EQ2 as an incentive to go. Given that they are unveiling EQN, I think using EQs most famous dragon as an exclusive in-game item for Dragon's Prophet is really smart cross-promotion for their new game and for SoE Live.

    It's called fan service.

I'm not complaining and I'm not new to Sony and their marketing.  It's just my take on their marketing and business.

There isn't a right or wrong answer.  I'm just curious about how people think about SoE marketing and how they value their IPs.

I do think it is a cheap PR grab though.  I stand by that.  They launch DP too early and its playerbase is anemic.  Nagafen is an iconic name and I think they're trying to pull in players for a half-baked game while generating buzz for a game they've released virtually no info for.  It's like a Smedley tweet taken to the next level.

Wait, so a company cares more about revenue? Of course they do...they always have, just like every other company does.

At the end of the day, it's a pet, some accessory that means nothing in the grand scheme of the world. They will be really limited to people who go to SoE live so the chances of me even seeing more than a couple my entire time playing EQnext (unless the are offered to buy) are probably really slim.

It won't affect me, my play style, or my in game experience therefore I could care less.

Trion, blizzard, ncsoft and funcom all do this as well. I think you are just hating on SOE to be honest.

Blizzard did something similar for Star Craft II Collectors edition

-- it gave players an exclusive ingame pet for WOW

Seriously man it's a business they can do what they want and if you don't like it then move on....Making a poll like this to get people biting is pointless and does nothing but annoy people, from your statement it's clear you disapprove so just don't bother with it if it bothers you so much. BUT you aint getting no support from me.

Agreed.  Of all the things to possibly ride SOE about, this seems one of the oddest.

Are you serious? Why do we need this thread? Is your dislike of SOE and Smedley so strong that you just felt compelled to post this?

You must hate a lot of companies that provide fan service, this is a complete non issue.

They sell in-game things for real money in their cash shop.   No, at this point it does not matter that they also give some away at some conference.

If Dragon Prophet would be no-microtransactions game, then yes then it would have matter and it would be very bad thing to do.

Some of you are really defensive.  About what I'm not sure because I'm not flaming them.  I'm more just curious why people like or don't like certain promotions.  I felt obligated to say why I didn't like this promotion.

Just to contrast I do like how they're marketing the remake of the original box art and integrating thee unlocks with various social media.  The new concept art is interesting.  The marketing campaign is inclusive, not exclusive.  I like that.

I'm not the best communicator, so what I was most interested in hearing was how you like or don't like marketing, not so much whether I'm right or wrong for my opinion, although you're free to comment on that.  If you think it's brilliant to market cross IP like this, then why?  If you don't like the concept art campaign but think this is okay then why?  More looking for thoughts not judgements on whether we should tar and feather SoE or people who like or hate them.

It seems weird but I don't care either way. I have no plans to play DP and I unfortunetely won't be attending SoE Live. I hope to make it next year though.

+1 to Nadia! I'll have to think about also buying a one day... you never know...

I think it's great, I'd always wished that Funcom had given me a Leet pet (from AO) in their later games (AoC & TSW).
