In F2P games you have your free riders moaning about what they can and cant do, you have the special snowflakes who spend their wage packet on everything they can get their hands on and you have the half flakes who think they get a good game for their subscription or regular payments.

In truth nobody wins in the F2P scenario as content is usually lacking or is kerching gated.  B2P can work, done right but I am already seeing a steady stream of friends leave GW2 due to a lack of serious updates.  They seem to have gone for dragon punch bags and silly fluff.

This game comes from Japan, while I am sure it will be successful here, their home market will be what provides them with their bulk income.  Moaning here about P2P and F2P is irrelevant. Especially since those who are their fans and dearly like FFX, they are happy to pay the price asked. I know I am.

Robert, nicely written article, you obviously enjoy playing the game but are able to look at it critically.

booo you beat me too it

Yes but yours had more gritty anger! Im like the tank your like the melee dps now all we need is a magic (rdps) and a cleric (healing spec)!

    RDPS INC!

I am so very thankful that the FTP/BTP trend is waning.  As quoted here:

"Personally I find it refreshing to play a MMO again that requires a subscription and I am not always left feeling like the developer is trying to see how far they can dig into my pockets under the guise of a free game. I do not know if I’m in the majority with that sentiment though"

..I am very much part of that population that is tired of the whole thing.  Sort of like what GW2 has become:  a candy coated shell of Living Story Events to push their new core of casino-style RNG gated crap.  No thanks.   Let me pay a sub, and if the game has depth and quality and engages me, I will happily play it for years.

Another thing interests me as well: the current Western market.  They jumped on the FTP bandwagon after seeing how the Asian market was raking in the millions by creating shallow, shiny (but garbage) games. Tacking on a Cash Shop with pretty, fluffy nonsense combined with hamstringing the playerbase at endgame if they didn't shell out hundreds of dollars for character gear and whatnot became quite lucrative, and the Westerners wanted a piece of that pie.

"The reality of the business side of MMOs is that the market has changed and I am unsure that Square Enix is really in tune with the western microtransaction surge. There is only one subscription AAA MMO left. With every other game having converted to a microtransaction, buy to play, or a hybrid subscription and microtransaction model... is charging a box fee and having a tiered subscription fee really the right way to go?"

I think if  people support the business model that they like the most, it sends a message.  I, for one, am tired of Cash Shop-based games becoming the norm and I want to support a quality AAA MMO that gives me an all inclusive package with my monthly sub.  Bring it on.

I like the P2P model - it allows me to enjoy the game, then quit when the undesirables show up ;)

Decent game, but not strong enough to thrive as a P2P title in F2P market.

Just my opinion, it will be interesting to see how this goes.

Couldn't have said it better. If people are able to max level before the 30 days of free play, this game is doomed. Going to be interesting to see a AAA title try subscription again. I am sure they already have the future plan laid out to go F2P when subs get low and box sales dry up.

It won't happen in 30 days. Just because you get your main job to level 50 does not mean you are done. For me as a paladin for example, I need to get marauder and conjurer to about 34-35 each so I can have my full range of usable abilities at 50. This does not even consider crafting at this point which are main classes in the game and require just as much time and effort as any other combat class to get to 50.

"Spell effects and animations are present but are not over the top. You can still see what is going on in a battle." What? have the person who wrote this even played the game or simply made a character spend 5 min in the game. Particle effects are VERY over the top and I like it but  luckily there are options to show less or even hide effects of other players. Sadly it is not working yet.

About the whole p2p. I think it will do fine. As long as they don't expect 600-700k subs. I really doubt the game will achieve the same sub numbers as FF XI so i can only hope they took that into consideration.

while the clreic  trys to heals the heart of the scorned Subscription playwer who said he is tired of P2p that does not deliver

I was thinking more along the lines of that our mission together is to venture deep into a black cave till we get to the bottom and face....... angry german kid from youtube! He is the one behind F2P advocacy.

Not always possible, do you think Rift and Tera went F2P because they wanted too? They had no choice, either that or shutdown the game. I'd rather see a game go f2p than shutdown.

as much as id like to agree with you here- warhammer age of rekoning is p2p and keeps the trols out.

but, i already p2p with eveonline =that a quality game, i dont think FF14 is bringing anything special into the mmo frey-so why am i gonna pay for it-when there are so many out there to choose from.

i say this becouse i played the first ff14 and althoguh it was beutiful at the time, now other mmos have cought up and dosent seem so special on;y to hardcore final fantasy players.

I second that, and the fact that f2p games are build around making money of the game instead of making a good game. Gw2 is best example.

A good article Robert, I feel the same as you do towards this game.

@frealms. That should say subscription only. Many games have sub options. And yes there are a few fringe sub only games left but at this point, with all due respect to Mythic, do you consider WAR AAA? And in the West is FFXI really a major game any more? I'd say not really. Also games like EvE have plex so you can get around the sub there too. You may not agree with how I qualify that statement but I've done my homework.

@QSatu If you have 100 people in the same fate effects are going to add up. I'm comparing it to games like Rift where the particles got so out of control everything just looked like a big ball of sparkle ponies.

I dont mind the fact that this is going to be P2P. I hope it turns out to be better quality like some here seem to think comes from the sub model. (Spoiler: it doesnt).

Unfortunately, this wont come down to P2P vs F2P. The sad truth is, even those willing to pay a sub price wont stay with the game very long when the server they are on dies. You severly limit your player base with a subscription, and the worlds will feel like a ghost town after the initial month of game time runs out. Two months after launch, you wont see any players outside the highest zone. And if you wait to level your other classes, you will be doing solo, because there wont be any new players coming in. Good luck.

Thanks for your thoughts. Will you be checking out OB? I'm looking forward to see more details on what you think about the game and will you be doing streams on it?

Having tried out the console version and the PC version. My opinion is that the game is much better on the PC than on the PS3.  The graphics are significantly lower quality.  When I played it  on the console it lacked good social interactions. The real fun in MMOs is social interaction. PS3 players dont often chat in open zones because they dont have a keyboard.  Whereas on the PC it was smooth and a standard MMO.   What made DCUO effective on the PS3 was area voice chat.  I really think that needs to be implemented for the Console.

In my opinion they should go buy to play if they want to be successful on consoles.  I wouldnt mind pay 2 play on PC for this game, but it is in no way worth the subscription on a console. I liked that version much better. But the PS3 beta is just people running around mindlessy questing and it plays much more like an standard RPG than MMO.  .

Square enix has a challenge in finding the right model for both systems.

You do realize that PC and PS3 players are on the same servers? Also you can plug any usb keyboard in to the PS3 (As I have been) to chat.

Also the graphics on the PS3 being of lower quality should come as no surprise seeing as the PS3 has been out for 7 years...

@kuppa as soon as they drop the NDA and let us stream I will. I will also be playing in open beta and continuing to share my opinions.

    2 points:

There is more than just WoW left in the AAA memo subscription market (sorry to the writer). FFXI is still sub, and is still very very healthy in terms of numbers and content updates.

Also; to those who are saying "game should be f2p! I can max out in the first 30 days!"... no, you can't. Go ahead and take your 1 class to 50. Go right ahead and try to participate with your 1 level 50 class, no materia, no subclass skills. See if you stack up to other players. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Your problem is that you are basing your opinion on your experience with other game franchises.  FFIV is not just any other game franchise.  They are their own boss and can afford to weather storms that other game franchises can not.  If you have not already done so, you need to read Yoshi-P's opinion on the P2P/F2P markets.  He addresses all of your points in great detail, and why come rain or come shine, FFIV will remain P2P for ever.

If FFXI is still around and kicking as a P2P game after almost a decade, what makes you think they won't do the same with FFIV?  Personally, I am glad FFIV will be P2P.  As others have said, this will increase the quality of not only the game, but the community as well. I sincerely believe that this is the one "pure" MMORPG game that I will remain subscribed to for a long time.

It'll stay pay to play until it either

    A. dies from obscurity in 2040, or

    B. dies a lot quicker.

All of you wishing for Free to play, sorry, it will never ever ever ever ever happen on this title, read about the game a bit, Yoshi has already stated it will NEVER be free to play, EVER.  FFXI is STILL pay to play.

So please lets focus on other topics, thanks.

I tried this game out...but boy oh boy do you HAVE to be a fan of either the FF series or Asian art to even play this game!!

I know that's terrible that I can't play a game simply because I can't keep my avatar from looking like Justin Bieber or in one case a 3 year old little girl....But I can't...I tried, but I just can't..Shoot me but when I think of a mythical warrior, out in the wilds fighting monsters for days maybe even weeks on end, facing life or death on a daily bases....I don't think he would have the time to reapply his mascara in between fights with...well bunnies, sheep, and lady bugs apparently
