New player positive review to Darkfall Unholy Wars

Zerat82Zerat82 BudapestPosts: 25Member

Hi all,

When I was buying this game I was hitting the dice, because I couldn’t find any decent review especially for beginners!  Instead I found only people moaning on forums that: ‘stay away from it’. So I wrote my experience till now.

I'm new to Darkfall and this review is only, for beginners who are not sure about this game!

I'm not a profesional review writer, new players to this genre wouldn't understand anyway how pros are defining this game. This review is  strictly for new beginners like me in this genre. Thank You .

Ok first of all! Graphics are ok! I kind of like it because everything is so dark, finally not a MMO where people running around with sexy Barbie girls with huge swords. I like also the atmosphere, it feels stabile.  What do you expect from a huge open world...

I can't tell you too much about the fight system after playing only a few days but it's harder than in the other games. I think it reveals more after higher levels. I don't like it, but I don't hate it!

Grinding is very important but you can also just go kill players who grind: D It is a hardcore game with hardcore PvP where actually your ass is the content of the game: D Crafting is serious shit; I never saw such a complex system where it's so huge but fun and simple!  You can create anything you want! Even more, I saw ships and castle doors!

If you buy the game before you draw any decision please give it some time!

This is a real game with real adrenaline and I'm all over it. Finally no 20 bots grinding on a spawn zone and than watching gold spamming on global chat. Try to boot here , you will get raped by players in seconds and take you stuff away (fool loot system).

Positive things in game:  asking help in global chat is effective! The community is very generous and helpful. You will have lot of fun just reading the global chat!  I even got some items for free and advice to crafting.

Negative: I wish there was more camera view when fighting.

My laptop runs it with 36 -40 fps on lowest settings, (with alienwate 14mx2.)

I have huge respect for this game, it is well done and I don’t care about the bugs or other problems that are missing from DF1 because I'm new to this , i have new experience!  I'm just happy that there is still a little sparkling chance to see real MMO's like this.

Just give it some time and if you’re a player who doesn’t like to invest time in a game and prefers only fast actions easy  game play, than it is not for you!

If you’re a person who is looking desperately for a true original MMO then get prepared to be surprised and addicted as hell.

I hope I could help you if you  having trouble with the decision to spend money or not on this and I'm sorry if I offended any pro mmorpg reviewer or hardcore player , this is only how I see the game right now after a few days. I do not have any manipulating intentions to other. I just got so suprised about this that i had to share it.

Thank You for reading.

this seems very shill like review. sorry if its hard to trust your review, because you seem bias in the whole thing for a reviewer. Clearly the game has issues, yet you overlooked them for your review.

People looking for a review would like a full picture of what the product is in its current form. Not what it will be 10 years from now. Thats not how good reviews work.

Seems more like a shill's defensive argument against the critics, if anything. No offense. But maybe you can edit and redo your review and come off less shill like. The reviewers are suppose to be for us (the consumer's side) not their (the Publisher/Developers/ Corp) side.

well there you are. And your attitude. How many people you believe will take your review seriously? How many people you believe will believe you and your red line? Your review comes off very Shill like. This forum gets lots of shills. and your review comes off as one of them. Also your attitude comes off as somebody trying to sell a product rather than help the community of MMO consumers get the best out of their money.

I guess you don't get it , I don't want people to take my review seriously because I'm not a pro but not even a good reviewer and you'r probably right I even have a bad atitude!  I hope that somebody will write a full review on this games soon  I just got suprised and love the game as it is! i I had to share it and I hope I could help a few people from my perspective to learn a bit more! But you know you can always write a short review about the game , please be my guest!

I think it was Roger Ebert who said "A good review doesn't just tell you if the critic likes the movie, but whether the reader would like the movie." (I probably mangled that quote horribly)

I know nothing about Darkfall except that the first version was had FFA PvP and skill-based levelling instead of a standard class system. I don't even know if Unholy Wars is a sequel, a reboot or expansion. After reading your review, the only new information I have is that the game is visually dark (do you mean hard to see or lots of sex and gore?), combat is confusing (why?), crafting is complex (how?) and you hate WoW.

Frankly, nothing in your review makes me remotely interested in the game and given you spend most of the review being hostile to the standard MMOs on the market, it actually repulses me from being interested. Why would I want to play a game that attracts people who get overly dramatic and aggressive over the idea that people enjoy different video games? Why should I believe the community is helpful if you're its representative?

As an aside, I'm pretty sure this thread will either be deleted or moved to the Darkfall forums.

    HI :)

Yeah, I have to admit: D you got big point here! That’s why I put my negative opinion about mmos in the bracket :D

BTW I was all over WOW vanilla and even Crusade, but I would never by Cata or Panda. What i hate is fake WoW clones want to get rich fast, companies and their games!

I will answer you'r main questions!

This version is also FFA  ! ( like D2 or lineage2 ahahahh awesome:) )

Game style and graphics are a bit dark depressive, gothic; I didn't see any nice green beautiful plains with happy bunny hoping around with a nice blue happy sky with nice rainbows! The gear is not like in Aion or Blade & SOul or even GW2. The gear is simple a bit crude and gothic. I think you can check the videos for that. I tried to write about more what a new player  is feeling when playing the game , the rest you can see on YouTube!

Combat for me is confusing because I can't aim the god damn "flying snake dragons” :D as a mage! I bet I won’t hit any enemy player soon who’s familiar with this game: D check YouTube about the combat!

Crafting: it's complex,  and very important role for the game , I dont think you can get off without it :D there are lot of things that you can create and you have to create, there are not 6 crafting skills like on other mmos, here are so much I can’t even count them, but they sound funy an important as hell for the endgame.

My review shouldn’t be deleted, because it's on forum and I have the right to have my own opinion about a game, but if they deleting it than it is ok with me :D I wont be upset!

But for me is one thing for sure if you like the soft core mmos of today , don’t bother with this one!

(All the new MMO’s out there are so terrible that I couldn't spend more than 10 hours playing them. Every new MMO is a wow clone or some scam. The new generation kids are used to Xbox platform and they expect the same from MMO’s! And company’s giving them, shaping the genre in a bad direction!  They can spend daddy’s credit card, than show up with bad attitude in the community.  I was getting so disappointed that, I can’t find any real MMO.  I had enough from colorizing my pants from brown to white and buy a stupid pet etc. There is no competition in those game only safe battlegrounds!)

    Thank You for reading.

I am geussing you mean beginner in starting to play Darkfall Unholy Wars, not so much playing a MMORPG for the first time?

Could you explain how would new player to this genre understand the part I highlighted green? What if the new player already considers the games he/she play's to be "real games" and now some forum guy explains to them they arn't playing "real" games? The first thing this as you call it Xbox generation player will notice is the dated graphics and might think to himself: OP feels this is a real game compared to my xbox games to look so much better?? Why do I have to swing my sword a 1000 times into a enemy to gain some skills??, obviously for some (incl. me) it's fun to have that type of skill progression.  I don't mind if the graphics suffer if the gameplay is deep enough for me to enjoy , I don't believe it's something the majority of new people might get into. As you said a Xbox generation player is used to games being a certain way. Older gamers (incl. me) have grown up with allot of stages in gaming and are used to different type of games. And might even be more accepting towards certain issue's a game may suffer from. What you want to experiance is measured by what you know.

Also in my opinion a true original MMORPG is a game where nothing is forced and everything one can do is optional.

Honostly I was really hoping to read a positive review of DF:UW, instead all it got was a "my game (<OP)  is better then the rest of games"  I understand that you are not a professional reviewer, but I don't believe you never read a review so you should know certain basics you could have mentioned for it to be called a review, especially if you try to present that review towards the new player in this genre.

    Quick overview of DF:UW

    Pros:

    Slightly improved graphics

    Cons:

    Bad UI

    Tons of missing features

Combat is just missing somthing the origional game had.

Prowess system. Instead of donig a skill and that skill levelnig up now I do a skill say like choppnig wood and I get prowess points.. this  can now be spent on any skills.. this leads to bots running aronud the safe areas choppnig trees 24/7..

    Safe Zones are too big

Actually i think the list could not on for some time..

  • milwalmilwal LondonPosts: 62Member Uncommon

Totally agree with the OP good review...except the player base is not always as helpful..

I played DF1 and i much prefer DFUW...It all depends on individuals and what you like, u cant flame the OP's thread for what he likes and belives in, typical forum bashers get a life!....

    Let the Flames begin....

For me the prowess system is the best thing about UW.

In old DF you could see macroer casting self-buff, or AFK-swimmer in completely empty NPC town, and you couldn't do anything to interrupt him. In DF:UW safe zones are busy, and you won't get ahead by either macroing or botting.

Prowess system has heavy dimnishing returns on everything except feats. Prowess gain on woodcutting starts from 0.3 per timber and quickly falls to 0.03 PP (prowess points) per timber.

"Hidden" feats can give you 6000 PP, or even 30000 PP. It means that you can have completely maxed PvP char doing few feats, in about a week or two.

And there is risk / reward aspect to it. You can kill 180 goblins in the safe zone - or one very hard mob outside safe zone - for the same amount of prowess.

Dont get me wrong the old system did need some tweaking.. And you could do stuff in Darkfall to stop people AFK macroing.. kill them there was no safe areas..

I dont like the fact that my skills no longer lvl when im using said skill and then being able to use prowess from woodcutting to put my sowrdskill up is silly..

I know a few people with second accounts that have just left them chopping wood and they ahve made nearly as much pp as their main characters..

Being able to totally max a character is a week is not really a good thing but there we go..

All I want from the leveling system is not punishing the players for playing the game as intended.

Sure, some will get most of their prowess by digging potatoes in starter city - but at least it's not the best and fastest way to get ahead.

Why is there so much negativity for finally a post that gives this game some positive feedback from a player who's NEW to this hardcore niche game? I'm playing this game right now and its great. Thank you OP for giving this game some praise, I'm tired of people giving this game so much shit. The PvP is fun and the skill ceiling is high which makes this game intriguing in its own right, you learn something new after every time you die.

Of course every game has its flaws, like balancing the classes and what not. But that can be changed later. Biggest issue for me right now is that clans with a shit ton of members have a major advantage in gaining prowess than small clans. Seeing people with 40k+ prowess in the first 3 days of launch makes the game less appealing to me. However, the majority of the population is at the mean level of prowess aorund 5-10k so that makes me happy.

Anyways, I hope you keep playing and having fun in DFUW. Kudos to you!

  • injenuinjenu miami, FLPosts: 142Member

What he wrote is just a reaction to all the negativity spewed about this game coming from players that haven't even played it.

It's like people are threatened by the possibility that after all this time, a game that doesn't look of this generation or even the last, with its rough edges and even harsher world could be actually successful.

The OP's point was that his experience of DFUW brought back the sense of adventure and real danger in a gaming experience that is so lost in todays MMO's cache.

This game probably won't be an overwhelming success, but it will attract a lot more players to this type of MMO that one day a fully funded developer will endeavor to use the same mechanics.  And finally us "pre-wow" players will have maybe have one more game to add to the list of classics that we haven't had the opportunity to add to in over a decade.

Every positive post I've seen about this game has just been raided by a mob of players who either haven't played the game, or have, and just don't understand the meta concept enough to where they would overlook certain imperfections with the game.  That or they can't find a quest giver or a spell bar and just give up... I dunno, and frankly I just don't care because this game has brought back an energy in me to want to log into a game and let chance and the chaos of this world dictate my actions and choices.

Oh jeez, lay off the guy.  It's his review.  It doesn't matter whether or not you think it's professional or not.  Some of you need to stop with the elitist MMO gamer BS.  The OP liked the game, do you have a problem with that?  Hey MMOExposed.  Are you paid by competing companies to paint a negative picture towards a game?  That's no different than you sounding the horn on someone who likes a certain game.  Stop acting like you're the king of MMO's, you're not, you're just some guy out there who thinks he knows more than he does.

Let the guy be excited.  If you don't like it, piss off.
