That is essentially what you're saying if you're against Kickstarter. ...

It's also what you are saying if you are happy with the direction Kickstarter is going at the moment.

    Why?

Because if you want Kickstarter to survive and continue to be supported then it needs to be 'successful' in that projects need to deliver what they promise (which builds good-faith)

The issue at the moment is that there are an increasing number of projects with poorly defined goals.

Backers are not thinking or reviewing critically and as a result some of those backers will be let down.  It can be argued it is their own fault (which is a fair argument) but it doesn't change the fact that this will destroy the good faith of Kickstarter and limit   "developers having better opportunities to make the games they want to make".

It is in the interest of everyone (including Kickstarter) to properly police the projects on their site.

Make the project creators give firm goals (not just vague statments about game features they would like to include - maybe)

Make the project creators state where exactly development stands (ie: "we have some concept art" / "the game is in closed beta now and fully functional")

Make the project creators be clear on what happens in the event of failure to meet goals once funded ("you still get to see the documentary" - Double Fine Adventure - so in that case backers were made aware that the project could fail and what the outcome would be.)

And make sure the backers are mature enough to understand the proposals and the possible outcomes.

The concern is that Kickstarter is currently attracting mindless fanboi drones who are shoveling money at any half baked idea with an intro video.  Worse still, they have unrealistic expectations about project development and have no concept that the project could fail to deliver.

I have no problem with people backing projects so long as they are clear on exactly what they are getting (if anything) but right now I don't think that's the case.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
